  • a software framework for matchmaking based on semantic web technology
International Journal of Electronic Commerce, 2004
    Co-Authors: Ian Horrocks
    Abstract:

The semantic Web can make e-commerce interactions more flexible and automated by standardizing ontologies, message content, and message protocols. This paper investigates how semantic and Web Services technologies can be used to support Service Advertisement and discovery in e-commerce. In particular, it describes the design and implementation of a Service matchmaking prototype that uses a DAML -S based ontology and a description logic reasoner to compare ontology-based Service descriptions. By representing the semantics of Service descriptions, the matchmaker enables the behavior of an intelligent agent to approach more closely that of a human user trying to locate suitable Web Services. The performance of this prototype implementation was tested in a realistic agent-based e-commerce scenario.

  • implementation of a lightweight Service Advertisement and discovery protocol for mobile ad hoc networks
    Global Communications Conference, 2003
Co-Authors: Baoning Wu, Wei Zhang, Liang Cheng
    Abstract:

Service Advertisement and discovery are important components for computing in mobile ad hoc network (MANET). In this paper, a lightweight protocol of Service Advertisement and discovery has been implemented, which is based on a MANET multicast protocol ODMRP (On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol). In this protocol, Service Advertisement and discovery information is piggybacked in ODMRP routing control packets. Simulation results of the implementation prove that the implementation workload and resource consumption of the protocol are lightweight.

  • Piecewise Network Awareness Service for Wireless/Mobile Pervasive Computing
    Mobile Networks and Applications, 2002
    Co-Authors: Liang Cheng, Ivan Marsic
    Abstract:

This paper presents a piecewise framework for network awareness Service (NAS) for wireless/mobile pervasive computing. We investigate how piecewise consideration of wired and wireless elements of the framework architecture benefits Service Advertisement and discovery and network-awareness techniques. We also discuss scalability of the NAS framework with respect to platform computing capabilities. The framework is suitable for a wide range of computing devices, from powerful ones with multi-tasking operating systems (OS) to small ones with lightweight OS. Case studies applying the NAS framework to sensor monitoring in home networks and data streaming in pervasive multimedia computing are presented. The analytical results on the performance of the NAS framework in these case studies show that it has significant advantages over traditional network-awareness frameworks in terms of reducing wireless bandwidth consumption and saving battery energy of mobile devices.

  • Service Advertisement and Discovery in Mobile Ad hoc Networks
    2002
    Co-Authors: Liang Cheng
    Abstract:

Service Advertisement and discovery is an important component for ad hoc communications and collaboration in ubiquitous computing environments. In this paper, a lightweight Service Advertisement and discovery protocol for MANET (Mobile Ad hoc NETworks) based on ODMRP (On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol) is presented. Its Service Advertisement and discovery information is piggybacked in ODMRP routing control packets. Thus the implementation workload and resource consumption are lightweight as long as mobile devices in MANET support multicast routing functionality. The protocol avoids excessive traffic overhead of periodic Advertisements since only updated Service Advertisements are distributed and the Service query/reply mechanism in the pull model is used. Moreover, the pull model deals with mobility in MANET because the advertised and registered Service can be obsolete after a certain period of time due to the mobility of either the server or client devices.

  • WAC - Service discovery and provision for autonomic mobile computing
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2006
Co-Authors: George C. Polyzos, Christopher N. Ververidis, Elias C. Efstathiou
    Abstract:

Service discovery and related Service Advertisements, redirection and provision decisions are essential processes in networks supporting mobile communications in order for these systems to be self-configurable with zero or minimal administration overhead. More so in mobile networks, i.e. networks where the network infrastructure is moving and the topology is constantly changing. Finally, the servers themselves offering the Services might be mobile, wirelessly connected and battery powered and thus power limited and energy constrained, with a finite horizon of operation and Service availability. For this reason they will probably have rather selective policies for Service Advertisement and provision. In this paper we review our previous work on topics in this area and put it under this new perspective, providing our vision for a general autonomic framework for Service Advertisement, discovery, provision decision, redirection etc.

  • Does a TV Public Service Advertisement Campaign for Suicide Prevention Really Work
    Crisis, 2016
Co-Authors: In Han Song, Jung Won You, Ji Eun Kim, Jung Soo Kim, Won Kwon, Jong Ik Park
    Abstract:

Abstract. Background: One of the critical measures in suicide prevention is promoting public awareness of crisis hotline numbers so that individuals can more readily seek help in a time of crisis. Although public Service Advertisements (PSA) may be effective in raising the rates of both awareness and use of a suicide hotline, few investigations have been performed regarding their effectiveness in South Korea, where the suicide rate is the highest among OECD countries. Aims: The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a television PSA campaign. Method: We analyzed a database of crisis phone calls compiled by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare to track changes in call volume to a crisis hotline that was promoted in a TV campaign. We compared daily call counts for three periods of equal length: before, during, and after the campaign. Results: The number of crisis calls during the campaign was about 1.6 times greater than the number before or after the campaign. Relative to the number o...
