    Abstract:

    The postmortem interval (PMI) estimation, in cases where the body was discovered in an advanced stage of decomposition, is predominantly based on entomological evidence. However, very few forensically important species are sufficiently known in detail to allow a practical application. One of them is the carrion beetle, Necrophila (Calosilpha) brunnicollis (Kraatz, 1877). Its development from egg to adulthood was studied under a range of ecologically relevant constant temperatures to find parameters of thermal summation models. Developmental sexual dimorphism and the presence of developmental rate isomorphy were investigated. Herein we present the lower developmental thresholds and sum of effective temperatures for all developmental stages of N. brunnicollis (egg, first-third larval instar, postfeeding stage, and pupae). We did not find any evidence of developmental sexual dimorphism nor was the presence of developmental rate isomorphy confirmed. Our results present the first thermal summation model of the East Asian carrion beetle that can be used for the PMI estimation.

    Abstract:

    Larval morphology of all three instars of Nicrophorus (Nicrophorus) nepalensis Hope, 1831 (Coleoptera: Silphidae: Nicrophorinae) is described and illustrated, based on reared larvae. The eastern Palaearctic and Oriental N. (N.) nepalensis is similar to the western Palaearctic N. (N.) humator (Gleditsch, 1767) in a number of larval characters. This is congruent with recent classification of the genus Nicrophorus Fabricius, 1775 by Sikes, who suggested a close phylogenetic affinity of the N. nepalensis species group (with 16 species) with the N. humator species group (2 species). The generic description of larvae of Nicrophorus Fabricius, 1775 is expanded, based on detailed SEM observation.

    Abstract:

    Necrophagous beetles of genus Thanatophilus are well recognized as a group of beetles with a high potential utility in forensic entomology. They can be used to estimate postmortem interval (PMI) or validate the value for other groups of insects commonly encountered on human remains, like blowflies (Calliphoridae). However, reliable tools for instar and species identification of their larvae are needed as such information is crucial for allowing accurate PMI estimate. One of the most common species of the genus Thanatophilus in Europe is Thanatophilus sinuatus. This species occurs frequently on human remains and its larvae feed on decaying tissues throughout their development. Therefore, the larvae could become useful bioindicators for forensic entomology, although their current description does not allow reliable instar or species identification. Our goal was to provide morphological characters for species and instar identification of all larval stages of T. sinuatus. The larvae were obtained from laboratory rearing under controlled conditions (20 °C and 16:8 h of light/dark period). Qualitative and quantitative morphological instar and species-specific characters are described and illustrated. Additionally, we report observations of biological and developmental lengths for all stages of the species. We also compared these morphological characters with recent description of T. rugosus and provided an identification key of these two similar and often co-occurring species. We noticed that some characters for instar identification were shared between T. sinuatus and T. rugosus and were confirmed by comparison with larvae of T. dentigerus that they can be applied to other species of the genus.

    Abstract:

    A total of 24 species and subspecies of Silphidae (ten belonging to the subfamily Nicrophorinae and 14 to Silphinae) are reported from Turkey. This list combines a literature review with examination of specimens collected in various regions of Turkey, and mostly housed at the Metin Aktas Zoological Museum of Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey and in the collection of Jan Růžicka, Prague, Czech Republic. One species, Silpha olivieri Bedel, 1887, is reported from Turkey for the first time. The occurrence of Nicrophorus sepultor Charpentier, 1825 in Turkey is confirmed, based on abundant recently collected material from north-western Turkey. For several other species, we provide new province records within Turkey. Thanatophilus ferrugatus (Solsky, 1874) is excluded from the Turkish fauna, since the published record was based on misidentification of the similar T. terminatus (Hummel, 1825). We provide a key to adults of species and subspecies known from Turkey, and distribution maps and photographs of all taxa.

    Abstract:

    Determination of insect species and their instars, occurring on human remains, is important information that allows us to use insects for estimation of postmortem interval and detect possible manipulation with the body. However, larvae of many common species can be identified only by molecular methods, which is not always possible. The instar determination is even more challenging, and qualitative characters that would allow a more precise identification are mostly unknown. Thanatophilus rugosus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a common necrophagous beetle in the whole Palaearctic region from Europe to Japan. The species is often encountered on corpses of large vertebrates including humans, and its potential to become a useful bioindicator for forensic entomology is therefore high. Adults can be easily distinguished from other species; however, larvae were never thoroughly described to allow species and instar identification. The aim of this study was to provide reliable morphological characters that would allow species and instar identification of T. rugosus larvae. The material for morphological study was obtained from rearing under controlled conditions (20 °C and 12:12 h of light/dark period), and specimens that were not studied morphologically were allowed to complete their development. Quantitative and qualitative morphological characters for instar and species identification are described and illustrated. Additionally, we report observations of biology and developmental length for all stages of the species.

    ResumenLas cañadas de Coatepec Harinas, ubicadas al sur del Nevado de Toluca, son de interés para la conservación por su integridad biológica. En este estudio se presenta la composición de Scarabaeidae, Geotrupidae, Hybosoridae, Trogidae y Silphidae, además se analizan aspectos como abundancia, riqueza, diversidad y estacionalidad. Esta información servirá para el desarrollo de estudios comparativos posteriores realizados fuera de las cañadas. Los muestreos fueron mensuales durante un año con trampas tipo NTP-80 cebadas con calamar, en un bosque de encino con elementos de mesófilo de montaña. Se obtuvieron 1,513 individuos pertenecientes a 9 especies y 8 géneros. Silphidae (94.3%) fue la familia más abundante, seguida por Scarabaeidae (4.7%), ambas con 3 especies cada una; las restantes, una especie y menos de 10 ejemplares. Nicrophorus mexicanus Matthews, 1888 (Silphidae), Nicrophorus olidus Matthews, 1888 (Silphidae), Oxelytrum discicolle (Brullè, 1840) (Silphidae) y Oniticellus rhinocerulus Bates, 1889 (Scarabaeidae) agruparon el 99%. Germarostes Paulian, 1982 (Hybosoridae) se registró por primera vez para el Estado de México. La estacionalidad fue marcada: el 87.5% de la abundancia y las 9 especies obtenidas se registraron en las lluvias. La diversidad y la cobertura de la vegetación, así como la presencia de arroyos, propiciaron condiciones favorables para las 4 especies más abundantes.AbstractThe glens of Coatepec Harinas in the southern part of Nevado de Toluca are of conservation concern because of their biological integrity. A total amount of 1,513 individuals belonging to 9 species and 8 genera were collected. Silphidae (94.3%) was the most abundant family, followed by Scarabaeidae (4.7%), both of which had 3 species each; the remaining families had 1 species and less than 10 specimens.     The beetles of the family Silphidae (Coleoptera) are necrophagous and predator insects associated with forensic entomology. In Peru the presence of six species of this family is known. In order to complement the information of this group in Peru, the Entomological Collection of the University of Cusco, Perú (CEUC - UNSAAC) has been reviewed, where the presence of five species of the family has been verified. Diagnosis, information on geographic distribution and comments on the ecology of the six Peruvian species are presented. The geographic information, accompanied by the pictorial keys presented, is expected to facilitate the knowledge about this group of beetles.Los escarabajos de la familia Silphidae (Coleoptera) son insectos necrófagos y predadores asociados a la entomología forense. En el Perú se conoce la presencia de seis especies de esta familia. Para complementar la información de este grupo en el Perú se revisó la Colección Entomológica de la Universidad del Cusco, Perú (CEUC - UNSAAC), donde se constató la presencia de cinco especies de la familia. Se presentan diagnosis, información sobre la distribución geográfica y comentarios referidos a la ecología de las seis especies peruanas.     We report for the first time the presence of Poecilochirus mrciaki Mašán, 1999 in the South of Europe, in the Iberian peninsula and on new carrier insects. Mites were collected from carrion insects, during a decomposition experiment carried out in the natural park “Aiako Harria” (Errenteria, Gipuzkoa). Most deutonymphs were found on the body of the necrophagous beetle Necrodes littoralis (Coleoptera, Silphidae). Other species of insects in families Geotrupidae, Staphylinidae (Coleoptera) and Calliphoridae (Diptera) were also transporting mites. All carriers were colonising or visiting the pig carcasses. Sampling lasted 3 months in the summers 2009 and 2010. Most mites were sampled from bloat to advanced decay. This is also the first record of P. mrciaki phoretic on flies (Diptera)
