    Abstract:

    The article describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of an interactive Simulation Activity to enhance student engagement and comprehension of evidence-based practice principles. An interprofessional team of nurse educators, Simulation experts, information technology specialists, and nursing informatics graduate students collaborated on the Simulation design. The results of this project support the need to develop innovative learning strategies to facilitate nursing students' understanding of the relevance of evidence-based practice research to improve patient outcomes.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Like any skill in nursing, preparing students for the changes in technology needs to be incorporated into the curriculum. Electronic Patient Records (EPR) are an example of technological innovation in health care. This article presents a case study of how one faculty of healthcare, working collaboratively with a web designer, created and implemented a Simulation Activity to enable student nurses to develop their skills in using EPRs. An evaluation study was undertaken into students' perceptions of undertaking the Simulation Activity and using EPRs in the Simulation Activity. Findings showed that students were positive about the Simulation Activity and using the EPR app in the Simulation, and felt well-prepared for using EPR in practice.

    Abstract:

    Ethernet is the most widely implemented low-level networking technology used today, with Gigabit Ethernet seen as the emerging standard implementation. The backbones of many large scale networks (e.g., data centers, metro-area deployments) are increasingly made up of Gigabit Ethernet as the underlying technology, and Ethernet is seeing increasing use in dynamic and failure-prone settings (e.g., wireless backhaul, developing regions) with high rates of churn. Correspondingly, when using Simulation to study such networks and applications that run on them, the switching makes up a significant fraction of the model, and can make up a significant amount of the Simulation Activity. This paper describes a unique testbed that gathers highly accurate measurements of loss and latency through a switch, experiments that reveal the behavior of three commercial switches, and then proposes Simulation models that explain the observed data. The models vary in their computational complexity and in their accuracy with respect to frame loss patterns, and latency through the switch. In particular, the simplest model predicts a frame's loss and latency immediately at the time of its arrival, which keeps the computational cost close to one event per frame per switch, provides excellent temporal separation between switches (useful for parallel Simulation), while providing excellent accuracy for loss and adequate accuracy for latency.

    Abstract:

    The Teachers Integrating Engineering into Science (TIES) Program is a collaborative project among faculty from the College of Education and the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. The TIES project paired university faculty with middle school science teachers to create three units that included engineering design using a variety of interactive learning activities in order to engage a wide range of students. The units included a Web-based Simulation Activity, lesson plans, a design project, and three types of assessments that were standardized across schools. Results of assessments were disaggregated by gender, ethnicity, special education, and socio-economic level. Mean scores for these student population groups were compared to mean scores for the same groups on the 2004 Nevada eighth grade science criterion referenced test. These results indicate that engaging students in engineering curriculum activities may diminish achievement gaps in science for some student populations.
