This study investigates the effect on children when their Single-mothers are exposed to cancer. METHODS: In a Cross-sectional design a sample of N=47 children of Single-mothers exposed to parental cancer was compared to a sample of N=135 children of mothers (living in partnership) exposed to cancer (multi informant approach). RESULTS: SDQ and KIDSCREEN showed no differences between children of Single-mothers and children of mothers in partnership. In the focused sample older children (11-17 years) showed more conduct problems than younger children (4-10 years). The differences between the types of assessment was significant for conduct problems. CONCLUSION: Single-Parenting and parental cancer as a double burden don't increase the risk for mental health problems and low QoL of children. The results for conduct problems will be discussed.

We examine how divorce affects children both directly and indirectly through its impact on the mother's resources, attitudes, and socialization goals. Particular focus is placed on those aspects of family interaction that impact on identity formation as it is linked to educational and occupational goals and to gender-role related behaviors associated with marriage, family, and job plans. Possible benefits as well as potential costs of living with a Single mother are discussed.

Single Parenting and emotional development of primary school students as viewed by nigerian primary school teachers

A descriptive survey designed was adopted to draw 200 primary school teachers. One research question was raised and three null hypotheses were respectively postulated to guide the research at 0.05 level of significance. In addition, data analysis was done using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Furthermore, the findings revealed that low self-esteem was the most influencing emotional development of primary school students in Ilorin metropolis. The findings also revealed that there was no significant difference in the influence of Single Parenting on the emotional development of primary school students in terms of gender and qualification. It is recommended that teachers of students from Single parents should be more sensitive to their emotional needs and always be ready to assist them. Moreover, counsellors should collaborate with teachers and parents to minimize the negative influence of Single Parenting. Teachers are suggested to be more sensitive and willing to assist students whenever they have problems at home. Single parents are suggested to provide more quality time with their children to avoid them performing negative behaviors. Parents are suggested to maintain stable home by living together to enhance their children emotional development.

Single Parenting and child behavior problems in kindergarten
Race and Social Problems, 2010Co-Authors: Aurora P Jackson, Kathleen S J Preston, Todd FrankeAbstract:Two waves of data from a sample of 89 poor and near-poor Single black mothers and their preschool children were used to study the influences of Parenting stress, physical discipline practices, and nonresident fathers’ relations with their children on behavior problems in kindergarten. The results indicate that higher levels of parent stress, more frequent spanking, and less frequent father–child contact at time 1 were associated with increased teacher-reported behavior problems at time 2. In addition, more frequent contact between nonresident biological fathers and their children moderated the negative effect of harsh discipline by mothers on subsequent child behavior problems. Specifically, when contact with the father was low, maternal spanking resulted in elevated levels of behavior problems; with average contact, this negative effect of spanking was muted; and with high contact, spanking was not associated with increased behavior problems in kindergarten. The implications of these findings for future research and policy are discussed.
