Somatotype analysis of freestyle wrestlers compared with nonathletes for health science research

Differences among weight categories for freestyle wrestlers were also examined. In this study, we first observed thirteen elite wrestlers and thirteen nonathletes. The participants were measured with the modified Somatotype method of Heath-Carter, resulting in 3 kinds of Somatotypes (endomorphic, mesomorphic, and ectomorphic) and 1 balanced type (central type). The nonathletes consisted of 4 endomorphic, 5 mesomorphic, 2 ectomorphic, and 2 central types. The wrestlers consisted of 12 mesomorphic types and only 1 ectomorphic type. Subdividing wrestler Somatotypes resulted in 8 endomorphic mesomorph, 3 balanced mesomorph, and 2 mesomorph-ectomorph types. Wrestlers had higher weight, body mass index, and mesomorphic component values than did nonathletes. However, the wrestlers’ endomorphic and ectomorphic component values were lower than in the nonathletes. Furthermore, wrestlers in the heavy class tended to have higher endomorphic, very high mesomorphic, and lower ectomorphic component values. The data from our study provides in part physical characteristics of freestyle wrestlers that can be used to establish a reference for systemic study of sports health sciences.

The differences between the weight categories for athletes were also examined. In this study, we observed forty elite judo athletes and forty non-athletes. The participants were measured with the modified Somatotype method of Heath-Carter, resulting in three kinds of Somatotypes, and a balanced type. The nonathletes consisted of nine endomorphic, thirteen mesomorphic, ten ectomorphic, and eight central types. The judo athletes consisted of only mesomorphic types. Subdividing the judo athletes’ Somatotypes resulted in twenty endomorphic mesomorphs, twelve balanced mesomorphs, five ectomorphic mesomorphs, and two mesomorph (one ectomorph and one mesomorph) endomorph types, respectively. Judo athletes had higher weights, body mass indexes, and mesomorphic component values than the nonathletes did. However, the athletes’ endomorphic and ectomorphic components were lower than in the nonathletes. Furthermore, judo athletes also tended to fall into a higher weight category, the higher the value of the endomorphic component and the lower the value of the ectomorphic component were. In addition, the −60-−90 kg weight categories were shown to have similar characteristics in terms of Somatotype components. However, the −100-+100 kg weight categories were shown to vary more in terms of a higher value for the endomorphic component and a lower value for the ectomorphic component than the lower categories did. The data from this study provides in part physical characteristics of elite judo athletes that can be used to establish a reference for systemic study of sports health sciences.

Differences between weight divisions for Gyorugi and Poomsae athletes were also examined. In this study, we first observed 51 elite TKD athletes and 30 non-athletes. The participants were measured with the modified Somatotype method of Heath-Carter, resulting in three kinds of Somatotypes (endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph) and a balanced type (central type). The non-athletes consisted of eight endomorphic, eight mesomorphic, seven ectomorphic, and seven central types. The TKD athletes consisted of 26 ectomorphic, 14 mesomorphic, six central type, and four endomorphs. Subdividing the Gyorugi athletes Somatotypes resulted in seven mesomorphectomorph, five balanced ectomorph, four mesomorphic ectomorph, four endomorphic ectomorph, three central types, two endomorphic mesomorph, two ectomorphic mesomorph, two balanced endomorph, one mesomorphic endomorph, and one mesomorphendomorph, And poomse athletes resulted in four balanced ectomorph, four balanced mesomorph, three central type, three mesomorph-endomorph, two endomorphic ectomorph, one mesomorph-ectomorph, one mesomorphic ectomorph, one endomorphic mesomorph, and one balanced endomorph, respectively. TKD athletes had tall, higher ectomorphic component values than the non-athletes. However, the athletes’ endomorphic and mesomorphic components were lower than in the non-athletes. Furthermore, Gyorugi athletes are taller and more frequently ectomorphic than Poomsae athletes. A lower weight division in Gyorugi athletes was positively correlated with a higher ectomorphic component, but negatively correlated with the endomorphic and mesomorphic components. The −80 kg class had the highest mesomorphic component value and the lowest endomorphic component value. Our study provides, in part, physical characteristics of TKD athletes to establish a reference for the study of sports health sciences.

Differences between weight divisions were also examined. In this study, we first observed 32 elite and professional ssireum athletes and 15 non-athletes. The participants were measured with the modified Somatotype method of Heath-Carter, resulting in three kinds of Somatotype (endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph) and a balanced type (central type). The non-athletes consisted of 2 endomorphic, 3 mesomorphic, 5 ectomorphic, and 5 central types. The ssireum athletes consisted of 30 mesomorphs and 2 endomorphs. Subdividing the athletes’ Somatotypes resulted in 23 endomorphic mesomorphs, 6 mesomorph-endomorphs, 2 mesomorphic endomorphs, and 1 balanced mesomorph, respectively. Ssireum athletes had higher weights, body mass index, and endomorphic and mesomorphic component values than did the non-athletes. However, the ectomorphic component in the athletes was lower than in the non-athletes. Furthermore, a higher weight division was positively correlated with a higher body mass index and endomorphic and mesomorphic components, but negatively correlated with the ectomorphic component. Our study provides in part physical characteristics of ssireum athletes to establish a reference for the studying sports health sciences.

The relation of Somatotypes and stress response to central serous chorioretinopathy

Methods Prospective case–control study. A group of 28 patients with a previous or current diagnosis of CSC was compared with a group of 26 healthy subjects. Anthropometric measurements were used to estimate Somatotype ratings in all subjects. Serum cortisol was measured at rest and following a stress-inducing computerized test in order to estimate response to stress in both groups. The main outcome measures included Somatotype categorization and the change in serum cortisol following stress in both groups. Results No significant difference in Somatotype composition was found between the groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in the elevation of cortisol following the stress-inducing test. The sample size was too small to exclude or find any significant difference between the different 13 subgroups of Somatotype composition in the elevation of cortisol. Conclusions Our study did not show a typical Somatotype related to CSC. While previous studies showed higher cortisol values in CSC patients, we did not see a higher elevation in blood cortisol following a stress response in this group in comparison with healthy subjects.

Anthropometry and Somatotype data were collected on 168 players from 14 countries before the Women's World Basketball Championship, Australia, 1994. There were 64 guards (mean ± s: age 25.4 ± 3.3 years, height 1.72 ± 0.06 m, mass 66.1 ± 6.2 kg, Somatotype = 2.9 – 3.9 – 2.6), 57 forwards (age 25.2 ± 3.8 years, height 1.81 ± 0.06 m, mass 73.3 ± 5.9 kg, Somatotype = 2.8 – 3.5 – 3.2) and 47 centres (age 24.1 ± 3.1 years, height 1.90 ± 0.06 m, mass 82.6 ± 8.2 kg, Somatotype = 3.2 – 3.1 – 3.4). Mean Somatotypes by position were significantly different (F = 7.73, P < 0.01). Guards had greater mesomorphy than centres and less ectomorphy than forwards and centres. Somatotype analysis of elite boxing athletes compared with nonathletes for sports physiotherapy

[Methods] The Somatotypes of 23 elite boxing athletes and 23 nonathletes were measured with the Heath-Carter method. The subjects were divided into four weight divisions as follows: lightweight, light middleweight, middleweight, and heavyweight class. [Results] The endomorphic component values of the boxing athletes were lower than those of the nonathletes. However, the mesomorphic component values of the boxing athletes were higher than those of the nonathletes. There was no significant difference in the ectomorphic component between the two groups. The higher weight divisions tended to have higher values of height, weight, and BMI than the lower weight divisions. The higher weight divisions also tended to have higher values for the endomorphic and mesomorphic components and a lower value for the ectomorphic component than the lower weight divisions. The group of nonathletes consisted of eight endomorphs, four mesomorphs, six ectomorphs, and five central types. Among the boxing athletes, there were 16 mesomorphic, four ectomorphic, and two central types and one endomorphic type. Subdividing the athletes into 13 Somatotypes resulted in five balanced mesomorphs, five endomorphic mesomorphs, five mesomorph-ectomorphs, three mesomorph-endomorphs, two mesomorphic ectomorphs, two central types, and one ectomorphic mesomorph type. [Conclusion] The data from this study provides in part physical characteristics of elite boxing athletes that can be used to establish a reference for systemic study of sports physiotherapy.

Research on the Somatotype Features of Chinese Elite Male Taekwondo Athletes
Sport science, 2001Co-Authors: Gao BingAbstract:elite male athletes who won the first four places at different body weight at the 1997 Chinese national taekwondo championship were taken as subjects for Somatotype study. The aim is to better understand their Somatotype features and provide basis for reasonable athlete selection and scientific training. The results showed that the Somatotype of Chinese male taekwondo athletes was featured by well proportioned stature, well developed muscles and skeletons, and low subcutaneous fat. With the rising of body weight, the Somatotype of male athletes transforms from derio mesomorph to mesomorph. Compared with athletes of other sports in and out of China, taekwondo male athletes' Somatotype shows some remarkable characteristics.
