pengaruh salinitas media berbeda terhadap pertumbuhan keong macan babylonia spirata l pada proses domestikasi effect of different media salinity on the growth of spotted babylon babylonia spirata l during domestication process
Kata kunci : Keong Macan, Babylonia spirata L., salinitas, domestikasi, tingkat kerja osmotik Domestication process is important factor prior to Spotted Babylon ( Babylonia spirata L., Neogastropoda, Buccinidae) culture. The optimum condition of the media in accordance with the necessities of life (eco physiology) spotted Babylon for domestication is not been understood, therefore the present work was aimed to examine the influence of different media salinity on the level of osmotic performance, growth, survival rate and feed efficiency. Spotted Babylon were collected from Jepara waters and were fed with juwi fish ( Anadontostoma chucunda ) for 5% biomass weight/day. Three salinity medium were applied, ie. Hypo osmotic (27 ppt ), iso osmotic (31 ppt), and hyper osmotic (35 ppt). The result showed that salinity affected very significantly (P 0,05) on survival rate of Spotted Babylon ( B. spirata L .). effect of parasitism by aphelinus spiraecolae hymenoptera aphelinidae on development and reproduction of spirea aphid homoptera aphididae
Environmental Entomology, 1996Co-Authors: Y Q Tang, R K YokomiAbstract:The effect of parasitism by Aphelinus spiraecolae Evans & Schauff on development, survival, reproduction, and population growth of different life stages of the spirea aphid, Aphis spiraecola Patch, was assessed in the laboratory. Differences in aphid population growth were related to the life stage attacked. Aphids parasitized as 1st and 2nd instars and 40% of those parasitized as 3rd instars died as 4th instars. Approximately 60% of aphids parasitized as 3rd instars and all parasitized as 4th instars and adults reached maturity and produced a variable number of offspring, with those stung as adults producing more. Parasitized adult aphids stopped producing offspring ≍6 dafter parasitoid attack. Parasitism by A. spiraecolae decreased life span, fecundity, and intrinsic rate of increase of the spirea aphid and increased aphid doubling time at rates dependent on the host stage parasitized. These data indicate that this parasitoid has potential as as a natural enemy of the aphid and should be further evaluated.

biology of aphelinus spiraecolae hymenoptera aphelinidae a parasitoid of the spirea aphid homoptera aphididae
Environmental Entomology, 1996Co-Authors: Y Q Tang, R K YokomiAbstract:The biology of nonindigenous Aphelinus spiraecolae Evans & Schauff on spirea aphid, Aphis spiraecola Patch, was investigated in Florida. Reproduction, fecundity, longevity, oviposition, and host feeding behavior were examined in the laboratory. A. spiraecolae showed a distinct preference for 1st- and 2nd-instar spirea aphids for both oviposition and host feeding, although all aphid life stages were acceptable. Longevity of A. spiraecolae was 17.8 ± 1.6 (mean ± SEM) d, fecundity was 138.2 ± 16.2 eggs, and the parasitoid consumed 27.1 ± 4.0 aphids per lifetime. Ovipositor insertion time of ≤30 s indicated nonacceptance for host feeding and oviposition, whereas insertion time of 31–120 s was correlated with oviposition, and >120 s indicated host acceptance for feeding but not for oviposition. A. spiraecolae was confirmed to be arrhenotokous. The intrinsic rate of increase was 0.33 female offspring per female per day, the net reproductive rate was 67.3 female progeny, and population doubling time was 1.8 d. These data indicated that A. spiraecolae has a high intrinsic rate of increase, good host discrimination and preference for young life stages of spirea aphid, and suggests that A. spiraecolae has potential as a natural enemy of spirea aphid.

host preference and suitability of two aphelinid parasitoids hymenoptera aphelinidae for aphids homoptera aphididae on citrus
Journal of Economic Entomology, 1995Co-Authors: R K Yokomi, Y Q TangAbstract:Laboratory tests were conducted to estimate the host preference and suitability of the aphelinid parasitoids, Aphelinus spiraecolae Evans & Schauff and Aphelinus gossypii Timberlake, for the melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover; the spirea aphid, Aphis spiraecola Patch; and the black citrus aphid, Toxoptera aurantii (Boyer de Fonscolombe). Both parasitoids attacked all 3 host aphids in choice tests, but A. spiraecolae showed a preference for the spirea aphid; whereas Aphelinus gossypii preferred the melon aphid. Results were similar in no-choice tests. Adult emergence rate of A. spiraecolae was substantially higher when the spirea aphid and the black citrus aphid were hosts compared with when the host was the melon aphid. A. spiraecolae female sex ratios were higher when the host was the spirea aphid than with the black citrus aphid or the melon aphid. Aphelinus gossypii adult emergence rates were higher on the melon aphid than on the spirea aphid or the black citrus aphid. Female sex ratios of Aphelinus gossypii were 70.2, 54.5, and 62.3% when reared on the melon aphid, spirea aphid, and the black citrus aphid, respectively, but these differences were not statistically significant. Development times of the aphelinids reared on the 3 aphid hosts were not significantly different. Adult biomass of A. spiraecolae was higher when reared on the spirea aphid (30.3 and 22.2 μg for females and males, respectively) than on the melon aphid (23.1 and 17.9 μg) or the black citrus aphid (28.8 and 22.0 μg). Biomass of Aphelinus gossypii were higher when reared on the melon aphid (33.6 and 22.1 μg for females and males, respectively) and the black citrus aphid (32.6 and 22.3 μg) than on the spirea aphid (27.9 and 18.3 μg). Based on these studies, we conclude that the spirea aphid was a preferred and suitable host for A. spiraecolae, whereas the melon aphid was a preferred host of Aphelinus gossypii under our test conditions. These aphelinids, therefore, may have potential to act in concert as natural enemies of aphids on citrus.
