Steamships of the Russian-American Company, 1839–1867

GrinëvAbstract:This article analyses the development of steamship construction and the operation of Steamships in the former Russian colonies in Alaska in 1838–67. This aspect of the economy of Russian America proceeded with the active co-operation of representatives of the United States and their technical support. The first steamship Nikolai I was completed in 1839 at Novo-Arkhangel’sk. The shipyard established an expertise in building and repairing Steamships, supplying the majority of vessels in the Russian–American Company fleet. Steamships in the Russian–American Company were always in the minority compared to sailing ships, but their number gradually increased. At the end of existence of Russian America in 1867 they amounted to more than a third of all ships of the company and about half of the overall colonial flotilla, contributing to the technical and economic development of the most distant corners of the Russian empire. The first steamship Nikolai I was built in 1838–1839 at Novo-Arkhangel’sk.

The Thames was where the steamship was more visible, and more visible in all its forms, than in any other location. Using a parliamentary return of 1851 this article analyses the characteristics and the ownership of the London steam fleet. Owners ranged from giants like General Steam Navigation Company and Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company to humble owners of single small vessels and steamship services embraced river ferries, tugboats and coastal, continental and oceanic routes. All contributed to change dramatically the nature of the capital’s commerce and city transport.

Technological Advance and Innovation: The Diffusion of the Early Steamship in the United Kingdom, 1812-1834

WilliamsAbstract:This chapter examines the process of diffusion of early steamship technology across the United Kingdom between the commencement of commercial services in 1812 through to 1834. It aims to demonstrate that diffusion of steamship services was both rapid and nationwide, and seeks to explain why this was. The basis for the statistics of tonnage, number, ownership and construction of vessels come from a variety of sources, in particular the British Parliamentary papers. In analysing tonnage rates, numbers of steam vessels, port activity, the development of steamship services such as mail and post, and the varied uses of Steamships between coast and canal, it discovers that diffusion of the steamship was not only rapid by the standards of its own industry, but rapid within the context of pre-1900 technological advancement.

Promotion, Speculation and Their Outcome: The “Steamship Mania” of 1824-1825

WilliamsAbstract:This chapter explores the perceived upswing in steamship ownership in 1824-1825 due to the boom in the stock exchange and the growth of joint-stock ownership schemes. It begins by explaining the expected outcome of the analysis - that joint-stock promotions instigated a ‘steamship mania’ akin to the ‘railway mania’ or the 1840s - was incorrect, and that over the course of research and study the authors discovered that in fact only three companies were formed during this period, two of which later failed. It charts the reasons for the steamship’s desirability, then analyses the boom itself - scale, routes, services, and diffusion. It studies the factors that led to such widespread failure during the period, and concludes that British enthusiasm for the steamship was overly-ambitious and led to losses, but these losses did not stop people from recognising and responding to the steamship as a major innovation.

WilliamsAbstract:This chapter explores the significance of the steamship as a vehicle of change and modernisation in Britain between 1812 and 1840. It builds on the previous chapter’s analysis of the nationwide diffusion of the steamship, then defines the features of modernity that the steamship exhibited - such as large scale production; specialisation; and wider market access. It then explores how these advances impacted society through the widespread recognition of modern technology; wider appreciation of the importance of time; advance of personal mobility; new forms of finance and operations; and the role of technology in the changing function of the British government. It concludes that the steamship played a vital role in British innovation, though ultimately was one factor of many in the widespread and rapidly increasing modernisation of the country.

How did this tremendous increase in trade affect economic development? This work isolates a causality channel by exploiting the fact that the steamship produced an asymmetric change in trade distances among countries. Before the invention of the steamship, trade routes depended on wind patterns. The introduction of the steamship in the shipping industry reduced shipping costs and time in a disproportionate manner across countries and trade routes. Using this source of variation and a completely novel set of data on shipping times, trade, and development that spans the great majority of the world between 1850 and 1900, I find that 1) the adoption of the steamship was the major reason for the first wave of trade globalization, 2) only a small number of countries that were characterized by more inclusive institutions benefited from globalization, and 3) globalization exerted a negative effect on both urbanization rates and economic development in most other countries.
