Stephanus showed higher genetic variability, with private haplotypes per sampling location. Knowledge of the distribution and genetic variability of these two Hoplolaimus spp. is valuable to growers to determine potentially damaging infestations of these plant-parasitic nematodes in soybean fields. Lance nematodes (Hoplolaimus spp.) are migratory ecto-endo plant parasites widely distributed in the United States that feed on the roots of several field crop, grass, and tree species.     Abstract:

    Lance nematodes (Hoplolaimus spp.) feed on the roots of a wide range of plants, some of which are agronomic crops. Morphometric values of amphimictic lance nematode species overlap considerably, and useful morphological characters for their discrimination require high magnification and significant diagnostic time. Given their morphological similarity, these Hoplolaimus species provide an interesting model to investigate hidden diversity in crop agroecosystems. In this scenario, H. galeatus may have been over-reported and the related species that are morphologically similar could be more widespread in the United States that has been recognized thus far. The main objectives of this study were to delimit Hoplolaimus galeatus and morphologically similar species using morphology, phylogeny, and a barcoding approach, and to estimate the genetic diversity and population structure of the species found. Molecular analyses were performed using sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (Cox1) and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1) on 23 populations. Four morphospecies were identified: H. galeatus, H. magnistylus, H. concaudajuvencus, and H. Stephanus, along with a currently undescribed species. Pronounced genetic structure correlated with geographic origin was found for all species, except for H. galeatus. Hoplolaimus galeatus also exhibited low genetic diversity and the shortest genetic distances among populations. In contrast, H. Stephanus, the species with the fewest reports from agricultural soils, was the most common and diverse species found. Results of this project may lead to better delimitation of lance nematode species in the United States by contributing to the understanding the diversity within this group.

    Three Hoplolaimus Stephanus populations were characterized morphologically, both by morphometrics and by SEM observations. These populations were used to develop a rapid and accurate molecular identification method for the species, which is useful because of the high level of morphological similarity between H. Stephanus and H. galeatus. Species-specific primers for H. Stephanus, amplifying a distinct fragment (260 bp) of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer1 (ITS1), can be used in multiplex PCR along with previously developed primers for other common Hoplolaimus species. We also infer phylogenetic relationships among H. Stephanus, the closely-related H. galeatus, and several other Hoplolaimus species, using sequences of the actin gene, ITS1 and LSUD.

    The epitomised Stephanus is the only text of an Ethnika surviving from antiquity. Consequently we cannot speak of his successors in the same way that he himself may be regarded as successor of Oros, or at a further remove, of Alexander Polyhistor or Herennius Philon. There survive a number of unnamed quotations regarding ethnic forms in various Etymologica and elsewhere, which sometimes provide more information than the corresponding entries in Stephanus, but it is a manifest oversimplification to suppose that all these entries derive from the full text of Stephanus. Stephanus and the Epitome were subsequently used by a few Byzantine writers, notably by Constantine Porphyrogennetus and the Continuators of Theophanes, in the tenth and eleventh centuries, and above all, though last in time, by Eustathius in the twelfth.

    This chapter focuses on some problems associated with Stephanus' ultimate sources, and considers how much his text contributes to the subject of ethnic terminology. Stephanus is not the earliest writer on or compiler of a catalogue of places and ethnics, but his work alone survives, though only in an epitomised form, and is thus the essential part of the evidence. The goal is to interrogate the text in the hope that it will throw more light on the various aspects of ethnic formations in general use. The chapter examines the text of the Epitome with especial reference to the main sources of earlier date, with particular consideration to (a) Alexander Polyhistor, of Miletus, a contemporary of Sulla, to whom he owed his Roman citizenship, with the nomen Cornelius, whose enormous output — some thirty separate titles in all — included numerous works concerned with ethnic forms; (b) Herennius Philon of Byblos, the Phoenician‐Greek ‘translator’ or author of the Phoenician history which passed under the name of Sanchuniathon, and author of a work on ‘Famous Cities and their Famous Sons’, which included much information on ethnic forms; and (c) Alexandrian Oros, of the fourth/fifth century ad, who formed perhaps the final link between Stephanus and his predecessors, and also between Stephanus and contemporary or later writers.

    The text of the Epitome of Stephanus contains no preliminary statement of principle regarding grammatical rules for individual ethnics, and although reference may be made under individual ethnics to regional or local usage, the information is repetitive and simply ad hoc. We are not in a position to say whether that is how the text was left by Stephanus, or whether an opening section or sections were excised by the epitomator(s). There are two recognisable features of the Epitome as a whole: (a) the inclusion in it, with corresponding ‘ethnics’ or a similar term, of a number of items which cannot by their very nature have had a civic role, and thus could not strictly have generated an ἐθνικόν, since they do not belong to that category of names. Alongside these irregular entries, there is another group of linguistic terms (b), which Stephanus uses to express departure from either an analogistic or local form, in such phrases as ‘it should be … ’. This chapter presents a list of some typical examples of the first class of entry; a second list illustrates different principles of linguistic usage recorded by Stephanus for features which have no independent political (including tribal) existence, but are included by him in his text; that is to say, forms which are justified or rejected by him in terms of the rules of ‘ethnic’ usage.

    Chapter 6 showed the long history of metonomasy, which is preserved in a number of entries in documentary evidence and particularly in Stephanus, relating to cities and communities of the Classical world. It also investigated the reverse process, by which ethnics of cities that had for one reason or another ceased to exist as independent bodies continued to be used, particularly (but not exclusively) in peripheral regions such as Egypt. This chapter looks forward to the new world, particularly the early Hellenistic age, which brought into being new urban settlements, with politically eponymous titles.

    The family Stephanidae from India is reviewed, resulting in the description and illustration of one new species of Megischus Brullé, two new species of Foenatopus Smith and two new species of Parastephanellus Enderlein. In addition, a Chinese species Foenatopus weii Chen, van Achterberg & Xu and a range extension of Stephanus Jurine are reported from India. The male of Stephanus bidentatus van Achterberg, 2002, is newly reported with descriptions and illustrations. Keys to genera and species of Indian Stephanidae are provided along with a checklist of Stephanidae occurring in India.

    Three new species of the genera Megischus Brulle and Stephanus Jurine from China (Hymenoptera: Stephanoidea: Stephanidae) are described, illustrated and keyed. Megischus ptosimae Chao, 1964, from Fujian is redescribed and the specimen from India described as M. ptosimae Chao by van Achterberg (2002) is renamed as M. alveolifer spec. nov. and the Malaysian specimen of M. ducalis Westwood listed by van Achterberg (2002) is described as M. ducaloides spec. nov. M. ducalis Westwood, 1851, is reported for the first time from Cambodia, which is the first report after its description. A key to world species of the genus Stephanus is provided.

    The genera of the family Stephanidae Leach, 1815 (Hymenoptera: Stephanoidea), are redefined and keyed. Three new genera and two subgenera are described and illustrated. Profoenatus gen. nov. (type species: Stephanus elliotti Ceballos, 1926, from Madagascar), with subgenus Comnatopus nov. (type species: Stephanus comma Morley, 1917, from the African continent), Afromegischus gen. nov. (type species: Stephanus pachylomerus Schletterer, 1889, from the African continent) and Pseudomegischus gen. nov. (type species: Stephanus sulcifrons Schletterer, 1889), with the nominate subgenus in the Indo-Australian region and subgenus Callomegischus nov.     Henricus Stephanus was a scholar, philologist, and publisher, one of the most important representatives of humanism and the French renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries, along with Guillame Bude (1468–1540) and Joseph Justus Scaliger (1540–1609). Henri E(s)tienne, the eldest son of Robert E(s)tienne, was born in Paris in 1531 and died in Lyon in 1598. From early on, he attended lectures on classical philology in the College Royal of Paris. Apart from Latin, which he knew almost at the level of mother tongue, Henri also learnt Greek, for which he showed a great love and impressive familiarity. The offspring of one of the most well-known publishing dynasties in France, Henri undertook the directorship of the family printing house after his father's death in 1559. His father Robert, who directed the business initially in Paris and then in Geneva, was also engaged as an author, printer, and editor; on the publishing activities of the E(s)tienne family see Pattison (1889) and Widmann (1970).
