  • vendor managed category management an outsourcing solution in retailing
Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management, 2003
    Co-Authors: Riikka Kaipia, Kari Tanskanen
    Abstract:

Abstract Outsourcing is expanding from parts and components to include services and process management. The question is no more just who designs and manufactures the goods, but also who manages the logistical processes along the supply chain. In this paper, we argue that this approach to outsourcing provides new opportunities for those retailing and grocery sectors that traditionally have not considered outsourcing as a Strategic Option to develop their operations. Retailers, especially supermarkets, are managing an increasing number of product categories and stock keeping units that have forced them to develop their replenishment practices in order to minimise out-of-stock problems. This paper examines the Options open to the grocery retailing industry that will enable it to attack the problem through outsourcing. A new process innovation, vendor managed category management, is proposed. A potential application is presented by means of one real-life case, in which a distributor offers the retailers full management of one category that includes assortment forming and logistical functions.

  • Current perspectives on nuclear energy as a global climate change mitigation Option
Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change, 2019
Co-Authors: Diana Silva Siqueira, Josué Meystre, Maicon Queiroz Hilário, Danilo Henrique Donato Rocha, Genésio José Menon, Rogério José Da Silva
    Abstract:

The primary source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are fossil fuels with about 66% share of global electricity generation. Despite the challenges it faces today, nuclear energy is considered an effective technology that can be used in mitigating climate change with specific characteristics that underpin the commitment of some countries to maintain it as a future Option. Several studies show the effects of investment minimization policies and the replacement of nuclear power plants with renewables. This implies economic impacts on the price of electricity, which increases the use of fossil fuels resulting in health problems related to air pollution and increasing costs to reduce the carbon emitted in the world. This paper addresses a systematic review of the prospects for nuclear energy investments adopted by countries as a Strategic Option to mitigate climate change and quantifies a range of carbon dioxide (CO_2) emission values that can be avoided using as reference the emission factor of power plants at coal.

  • Water resources in the GCC countries: A Strategic Option
    Renewable Energy, 1994
    Co-Authors: Khalid R. Al-hajri, Lulwa A. Al-misned
    Abstract:

Water is a Strategic commodity. Presently, scarcity of water supply in the GCC countries is overcome by desalination plants using depletable fossil fuels. The region will face major challenges to secure water supply in the next century and beyond. Coupling sea water and solar energy is the only viable Option to secure water needs for future generations. This article highlights the dimension of the water supply problems in the Gulf and suggests a Strategic Option.
