  • Prevalencia de parásitos gastrointestinales en equinos y factores de riesgo asociados en varias zonas de Antioquia, Colombia

    Abstract:

ABSTRACT: There are few reports on the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in equines in Colombia. In this study, 946 horses were sampled from a total of 204 farms in the municipalities of Rionegro and those that comprise the Valle de Aburrá, in the department of Antioquia. Fecal samples were taken directly from the rectum and processed by the McMaster, Baermann and Graham techniques. The prevalence of parasites at the farm level was 56.3% for Strongylidae, 10.7% for Strongyloides spp, 2.8% for Oxyuridae and 0.3% for Dictyocaulus spp. From a practical point of view, the most pathogenic parasites and of greatest resistance concern were the Cyathostomids, which are included within the Strongylidae and whose prevalence was greater than 50%. The OR of presenting Strongylidae was 49% lower in equines that participated in fairs compared to those that did not. The OR of presenting Strongylidae was 56% lower in equines that use stables than those not being stalled. Also, the OR of being positive to Oxyuris equi was 88% lower in animals that participate in fairs compared to those that did not, and was 3.66 times higher in equines with body condition ≤ 2 in comparison with those of body condition ≥3. Based on this information, it is important to initiate studies that evaluate the state of antihelminthic resistance and the relationship between parasitic load and clinical condition in order to determine the real impact of these parasites on the equines of these regions.RESUMEN: Existen pocos reportes de la prevalencia de parásitos gastrointestinales en equinos en Colombia.
    Abstract:

Objectives . To establish the presence and prevalence of Strongylida nematode parasites in Achatina fulica in the Valle del Cauca, especially of nematodes that are potentially pathogenic for humans. Materials and methods . A. fulica individuals were collected in nine cities of the Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Direct visual examination was used to identify A. fulica parasites. Nematodes were separated from tissue or collected from mucus, washed in saline solution, and fixed in a hot AFA solution. Samples were mounted in glycerine and observed under the microscope. Results . The general nematode parasite prevalence was 35% in 2013. The city with highest prevalence during 2013 was Cartago (60%), following by Buenaventura (42.9%) and Cali (33%), while during 2014 were Cali (30%) and Buenaventura (30%). The Strongylida nematodes registered were classified in three genera: Angiostrongylus (14.7% prevalence), Aelurostrongylus (2.6%),and Strongyluris (2.6%). The city with highest positive records of Angiostrongylus was Cali during 2014 and Aelurostrongylus was Buenaventura during 2013. Strongyluris genus was recorded only in Cali during 2013, with a prevalence of 11%. Of the nine evaluated cities, five has presence of Angiostrongylus . Conclusions . Three genera of Strongylida nematode were recorded associated with A. fulica s specimens in the Valle del Cauca during 2013 and 2014. Therefore, the role that A. fulica and native mollusk species could be playing in the life cycle of these parasites at the local level should not underestimated.

  • intestinal migrations of trichostrongylus retortaeformis trichostrongylina trichoStrongylidae in the rabbit
    Veterinary Parasitology, 2003
    Co-Authors: F Audebert, P N Vuong, M C Durettedesset
    Abstract:

Abstract Observations were made on histological sections of the stomach and small intestine of seven rabbits infected with Trichostrongylus retortaeformis and from one uninfected control rabbit. At 12 h post-infection, larvae were found in the small intestine. At first, only a few larvae were observed entering the mucosa through capillaries of the stroma of villi; the majority of larvae remained in the intestinal lumen, within mucus of the crypts. We consider that the presence of the worms in the stroma is the result of a larval migration. From a phyletic point of view, this migration is interpreted as an ancestral memory of the pulmonary migration seen in the primitive Strongylida.

  • the origins and evolutionary expansion of the Strongylida nematoda
    International Journal for Parasitology, 1994
    Co-Authors: M C Durettedesset, Ian Beveridge, D M Spratt
    Abstract:

The Strongylida are thought to have arisen from free-living rhabditoid nematodes, but the relationships between the major groupings within the Strongylida, the Strongylina, the Metastrongylina, Trichostrongylina and the Ancylostomatina are far from clear in spite of the abundance of morphological data now available for analysis. Evolutionary mechanisms including co-evolution, host switching, host dispersal, use of intermediate hosts, various sites of localisation within the definitive host and modifications of life-cycle strategies appear to have been utilised in the expansion of the Strongylida, with different mechanisms predominating in different families or superfamilies. Co-evolution appears to have been a major mode of evolution in the Strongylina, in contrast to the Trichostrongylina, which have used host dispersal and host-switching to great advantage. The phylogeny of the Ancylostomatina shows little association with host evolution, but does match the feeding preferences of the hosts. The Metastrongylina have utilised intermediate hosts and life cycle modifications including a shift to extra-intestinal sites as major means of diversification, in contrast to the other sub-orders. The review, while indicating much progress in our understanding of the phylogeny of the Strongylida, also reveals that enormous gaps still exist, and emphasises the tentative nature of many of the phylogenetic hypotheses tendered to date.

    Abstract:

It is necessary to distinguish the three main evolutionary lines which presently constitute the Trichostrongyloidea. We propose to raise the following taxa of Strongylida as presented in the CIH keys (1974). Ancylostomatina for Diaphanocephaloidea and Ancylostomatoidea. Strongylina for Strongyloidea. Trichostrongylina for Trichostrongyloidea. Metastrongylina for Metastrongyloidea. The Trichostrongylina suborder includes three superfamilies: Trichostrongyloidea, Molineoidea superfam. nov. and Heligmosomoidea superfam. nov
