  • Why we should stop conflating the Superego with the conscience
    Psychoanalysis Culture & Society, 2017
    Co-Authors: Donald L Carveth
    Abstract:

Freud’s decision to merge conscience into the Superego has made it difficult to study conflict between them. While the Superego comprises aggression turned back against the self, identification with the aggressor, and (often immoral) internalized social norms, conscience emerges from early libidinal attachments and identification with the nurturer. The distinction between Superego and conscience is grounded in the Freudian and Kleinian distinctions between Thanatos and Eros and the paranoid-schizoid and depressive or reparative positions. While Freud, Alexander and Ferenczi all viewed the analytic cure as involving the demolition of the Superego, mainstream psychoanalysis, following Strachey, has preferred Superego modification to recognition of a separate conscience, failing to understand that it is only on the basis of conscience that one can know in which direction the Superego needs to be modified. The social and cultural as well as the clinical import of these distinctions is explored.

  • why we should stop conflating the conscience with the Superego and expand structural theory
Psychoanalytic Discourse Discours Psychanalytique (PSYAD), 2017
    Co-Authors: Donald L Carveth
    Abstract:

Freud’s decision to incorporate conscience and the ego-ideal into the Superego has made it difficult for us to recognize the conflicts between, for example, the Superego and the conscience, the ego-ideal and the Superego, the ego-ideal and the ego, etc. When we recognize five instead of three structures and the conflicts both among and within each, there are some fifteen conflicts in total, of which we have intensely studied only a few. Recognition of a conscience grounded in identification with the good part-object and distinct from the Superego grounded in identification with the bad part-object enables us to understand that while in our clinical work it is essential to establish a non-judgmental atmosphere, we must carry the conscience in the treatment until such time as, with our help, our patients are able to carry it themselves, as this is their only avenue of escape from the persecutory Superego.

  • the immoral Superego conscience as the fourth element in the structural theory of the mind
    Canadian Journal of Psychoanalysis, 2015
    Co-Authors: Donald L Carveth
    Abstract:

I have argued (Carveth, 2013) that, coinciding with the rise of neoliberalism and the culture of narcissism, psychoanalytic concern with problems of guilt and the Superego was displaced in favour of a range of other preoccupations. Today issues of conscience appear to be returning from repression both in society at large and in psychoanalysis, but our theory in this area is deficient in many respects. We have largely identified the Superego with the moral and the id with the immoral, thus downplaying the frequent immorality of the Superego and the morality of the id. We have implicitly succumbed to a moral relativism oblivious to the existence of a conscience capable of judging both society and the Superego it shapes. If we are to live up to our claim to be “the psychology of the innermost mental processes of man in conflict” (Kris, 1938, p. 140), we need to recognize conflict between Superego and conscience—and conscience itself as the fourth element of the structural theory of the mind.

  • the triumph of id over ego and Superego in to his coy mistress
    Social Science Research Network, 2010
    Co-Authors: Hammad Mushtaq
    Abstract:

The researcher has carried out textual analysis of Andrew Marvell’s poem ‘To His Coy Mistress’ from the view point of psychoanalytical criticism in order to assert that in the fight of id, ego, and Superego, in the lover’s psyche, id becomes triumphant. For this, the researcher has used close-text analysis technique. Psychoanalytical criticism is based on the assumption that literary works are like dreams of the authors or of the characters created by the authors in these works. In the present article, the researcher has focused on the main character of the poem, i.e. a passionate lover. The researcher has developed the argument that the poem is a battle ground of three aspects of the lover’s personality i.e. Id, Ego, and Superego. Though, Ego and Superego appear to be functional in the first two parts of the poem, they subside and sink into nothingness in the final part of the poem. Id, on the other hand remains somewhat dormant in the first two parts but it forcefully makes its way towards the surface and becomes dominant in the final part of the poem. ‘To His Coy Mistress’, thus, can be read as a battle ground of Id, Ego, and Superego, where the final victory is snatched by Id.

  • the seductive Superego the trauma of self betrayal
The International Journal of Psychoanalysis, 2001
    Co-Authors: Lawrence Josephs
    Abstract:

The author describes a pathological manifestation of the approving Superego that functions as a perversely seductive Superego. In this process, the seductive Superego rationalises and makes ego-syntonic a gratification of forbidden wishes that will result in unconscious punishment. The author argues that the seductive Superego torments the self by teasing it with the presence of a tantalising but forbidden object of desire and then by inflicting shame on the self for its timidity, which prevents it from pursuing the object in spite of the dangers. He suggests that the seductive Superego inflicts a betrayal trauma upon the self by unconsciously actualising a sado-masochistic fantasy of seduction, surrender and betrayal, along with a humiliating punishment for surrendering. The Superego has traditionally been divided into two aspects: the critical Superego and the approving Superego. Pathological manifestations of the critical Superego have been extensively studied by Freudian and Kleinian analysts, with the result that alleviating an unreasonably demanding, harsh and sadistic Superego is a standard treatment goal of psychoanalysis. In contrast, pathological manifestations of the approving Superego have been less extensively documented. The benign Superego was highlighted in Schafer’s (1960) landmark paper and has not been much discussed in its more pathological form. This paper will focus on the pathological manifestations of the benevolent Superego, what I call the seductive Superego. The seductive Superego is an excessively permissive Superego that attempts to seduce the person into gratifying forbidden wishes, despite the fact that such forbidden pleasure will evoke an unconscious need for punishment (Freud, 1916). The seductive Superego, though manifestly benign, approving and protective, is latently perverse and sadistic, leading the person into a betrayal of self. The seductive Superego is more than passively permissive or corruptible. It does more than ‘look the other way’. It actively encourages and rationalises the gratification of forbidden wishes. Thus the seductive Superego unconsciously perpetrates a trauma of seduction and betrayal upon the self, violating the sacred trust that one’s conscience is presumed to uphold.
