    Abstract:

    The modern Textile/clothing industry is facing a great number of challenges related to sustainability. These challenges include environmental disasters and hazards to human health caused by toxic materials, resource exhaustion (water, energy, raw materials), and social impacts caused by delocalization, counterfeiting and other elements. In order to develop the industry in a sustainable and optimal way when producing new Textile products, industrial companies need to optimize their production organization by minimizing risks not only at levels of materials and processes but also in the whole international Textile Supply Chain. In this paper, a method is proposed for developing a sustainable Textile Supply Chain by selecting the most relevant materials and suppliers. The criteria of sustainable development include environment protection, recycling capacity, energy saving, human health and safety, and social impacts. Some evaluation criteria have been normalized by recognized international organizations. The method of data aggregation with multiple fuzzy criteria is applied in order to select the most appropriate Textile material and its supplier. A new method combining expert knowledge of enterprise strategy and sensitivity criteria is used for determining the linguistic weights of these fuzzy criteria. In the proposed method, the aggregated evaluation index takes into account the criteria of sustainable development and the specific application context as well as company strategies for management of Supply Chains.

    Abstract:

    Life cycle assessment (LCA) is increasingly used as a decision support system that enables the modelling, the evaluation and the comparison of different alternatives of products, processes or Supply Chains as regards their environmental and sustainable impacts. In the Textile-garment domain, the complexity of the Supply Chain adds to the difficulty of the interpretation of the LCA results. The authors' purpose is to use multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) method in order to analyse the results of the life cycle assessment of Textile products to help the different actors in the Supply Chain. Within this framework, the paper studies the choice of the most suitable multicriteria analysis method from the literature and shows its application in the Textile Supply Chain.

    Abstract:

    In a current high competitive business environment, cost estimation is a strategic tool in order to make decisions related to products during their design and development phases. Against traditional estimation methods, that needs to wait until the technical description of the product is completed, there exist new methods allowing to estimate the cost quickly and with an acceptable accuracy. Complementarily to cost management methods (for example, standard cost management analytic or Activity-Based Costing techniques), such new cost estimation methods may shorten the design phase when the rapidity of the conception is needed. This way may be valid when there is a huge number of models, and/or high level of new design rate. This paper compares various cost estimation methods in the Textile context : their advantages, drawbacks, and applicability in the product life cycle. The parametric cost estimation model is particularly suited to the earliest stage of design-to-cost approach. It is widely used in different industrial domains such as aerospace, aircraft, telecommunication and automotive industries in order to accelerate and drive the product development process. Even though the industrial contexts seem to be different, this paper shows several possibilities of application of parametric cost estimation methods in the Textile and garment industries, and the procedures and tools required for their computation. Finally, this approach has been applied to estimate the unitary cost of a representative family of wool Textile fabrics.

  • A fully yarn integrated tag for tracking the international Textile Supply Chain

    Abstract:

    Abstract Textile and clothing industry is one of the classical manufacturing industries which have recently undergone major transformations due to delocalization and high market volatility. In this context, one solution to guarantee the control and optimization of globalized Supply Chain is the implementation of a traceability system to follow-up the activities of different actors of the Supply Chain, improve brand value by countering pirate and enhance value creation in reverse Supply Chain. Therefore, in this paper, we first introduce the idea of fully integrated tracking tags for casting traceability in the Textile. Then, as one stage of the traceability system development, we describe a yarn coding scheme to transform a Textile structure into a tracking tag. Here, a number of special yarns were coded according to various combinations of optical characteristics. Further, a recognition system was developed for identifying the unique identification yarn code by using different image analysis techniques.

  • Decision Support System for Supply Chain Performance Measurement: Case of Textile Industry

    The chapter aims to propose decision support framework for identification of key performance indicators for Supply Chain performance measurement in Textile industry. To meet the objective, hierarchical model is developed including criteria, sub-criteria, alternatives. Proposed decision support system (DSS) is developed with objective as Textile Supply Chain performance measurement with 4 stakeholder value creation perspectives (Financial, Customer, Internal business processes, Innovation and learning) suggested by balanced scorecard (BSC) as criteria, having 23 sub-criteria (key performance indicators) and 3 Supply Chain operations (Procurement-Production-Distribution) as alternatives. Structured Delphi method and Minitab 17.0 software for statistical analysis are used for the development of decision support framework. Whereas, for establishing pair wise comparison and analyzing the relative importance of these criteria, sub-criteria and alternative, analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is used. The paper demonstrates the application of decision support system in identifying key performance indicators and analyzing the importance of KPIs towards overall performance of Supply Chain in Textile. The proposed system is put to test at four Textile case industries. Case company wise implication as well general implications on Textile Supply Chain performance is presented. Also, managerial implication and limitations are presented. Proposed study presented novel approach in developing DSS for Textile Supply Chain performance measurement, which is very rare one. This DSS will be used for identifying key performance metrics/indicators and also analyzing their importance towards Supply Chain performance. Use of BSC perspective has given framework wholesome coverage of all stakeholders’ consideration. Also, involvement of Supply Chain cyclic operation added consideration of Supply Chain partners.

  • Developing a Framework for Traceability Implementation in the Textile Supply Chain

    Traceability has recently gained considerable attention in the Textile industry. Traceability stands for information sharing about a product including the product history, specification, or location. With the involvement of globally dispersed actors in the Textile Supply Chain, ensuring appropriate product quality with timely supplies is crucial for surviving in this industry with ever increasing competition. Hence it is of paramount importance for a Supply Chain actor to track every product and trace its history in the Supply Chain. In this context, this paper presents a framework to implement traceability in the Textile Supply Chain. A system approach has been followed, where firstly the usage requirement of traceability is defined, and then a framework for implementing intra-actor or internal traceability and inter-actor or external traceability is discussed. This article further presents a sequential diagram to demonstrate the interaction and information exchange between the actors in the Supply Chain, when the traceability information is requested. An example is also illustrated for data storage using a relational database management system and information exchange using XML for the Textile weaver. Finally, the article discusses challenges and future studies required to implement traceability in the Textile Supply Chain.
