'Griot Revista de Filosofia', 2019Co-Authors: Rocha, Cleidson De JesusAbstract:This article presents the contribution of Theodor W. Adorno to the configuration of an education capable of confronting contemporary irrationalism, through a resumption of the definition of dialectics as a critic of philosophical thought. It has modernly limited itself to rationalizing rationality to the highest power, without dwelling on the effects of its unfulfilled promises. The work of Adorno is recognized by a propensity according to which it is the responsibility of philosophy to critically reflect and clarify the way culture organizes itself. Such a proposition leads to a theoretical project that presupposes an awareness of the misconceptions of reason, in an attempt that, through enlightenment, man can construct possibilities of autonomy and emancipation. The article is organized in two parts, as follows: 1. Theorical-practical ambitions of the critical Theory of Society and 2) The threads that weave TW Adorno's critical Theory, divided into three topics: a) The general cultural climate of late capitalism - the propensity for barbarism; b) Bankruptcy of culture - objective reason of barbarism; c) Reflexes of damaged life: the sickness of contact

Ambições tórico-práticas da teoria crítica da sociedade e 2) Fios que tecem a teoria crítica de T. W. The police officer who kills: a study on the lethality practiced by military police officers of the Sao Paulo State Military Police
State Military Police (SPSMP) are among the military police in Brazil that have one of the highest lethality rates resulting from their actions and are also among the police that kill the most around the world. This thesis aims to reflect on the determinants present in the phenomenon of police lethality at SPSMP in the social, institutional and subjective spheres and its consequences on social life and the illness of the military police officers. Research sources include two semi-structured interviews, conducted with military police officers from SPSMP, nine police reports published in other research papers in addition to my autobiographical account as a police officer. The analysis was based on the critical Theory of Society and the psychodynamics Theory of work. As a result, it was found that the militarization process of the military police, the police education, the discourse of war and the elimination of the enemy as well as the organization of work at SPSMP generate strong tensions, anxiety and suffering for the military police officers, leading to the production of defense mechanisms, which is related to the high incidence of lethality and high rates of police officers suicide. As a conclusion, the idea that coping with police lethality is not reduced to the problem of impunity is emphasized. It is, rather, necessary to prevent the conditions that generate this lethality from continuing to exist. And some actions are suggested, such as: the repeal of legal provisions that allow the existence and operation of the military police in a lethal manner and without effective control by Society, the reform of the SPSMP educational system as well as further research that helps to understand the problem of the police lethality and that can point out ways to overcome i

Theodor Adorno’s reflections and contributions to education studies
In this article we will try to understand what were the main proposals of Theodor W. Adorno, German philosopher and member of the Frankfurt School, for the education of his time. From an analysis, even if marginal, of part of the substantial set of his writings, lectures, interviews and debates, especially the work in conjunction with Horkheimer, “Dialectic of Enlightenment” and the essays of “Education and Emancipation”, this text highlights the assumptions of the Adornian thought, based on the critical Theory of Society, and elucidates its reflections in an attempt to propose another education, one that was more political and based on enlightenment and emancipation. We also seek to think about the timeliness and urgency of their reflections for the contemporary educational field

Two of the most renowned Western philosophers, John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas, have produced much of their theoretical production around this category. From the first it has been said that his is "the most systematic and persistent attempt of our time to revitalize the moral and political offer of liberalism"; the work of the second is also paradigmatic of any philosophical-political and legal approach that approximates the study of contemporary democracy, and even of those projects that would like to restore the postulates of a critical Theory of Society. In these pages we immerse ourselves in the theoretical corpus of both authors (especially in Habermas, more sophisticated, vast and complex than Rawls's and commonly considered as a contradictor located on the other side of liberalism) to try to confirm our hypothesis according to which both represent two versions (on the one hand, a community of more or less homogeneous values; on the other, a diverse but normatively pacified order) of a liberalism that, in any case, is presented as a single promise of political stability

Society seen through the prism of space: outline of a Theory of Society and space
URBAN DESIGN International, 2002Co-Authors: Bill Hillier, Vinicius NettoAbstract:Two questions challenge the student of space and Society above all others: will new technologies change the spatial basis of Society? And if so, will this have an impact on Society itself? For the urbanist, these two questions crystallise into one: what will the future of cities have to do with their past? Too often these questions are dealt with as though they were only matters of technology. However, they are much more than that. They are deep and difficult questions about the interdependence of technology, space and Society that we do not yet have the theoretical apparatus to answer. We know that previous ‘revolutions’ in technology such as agriculture, urbanism and industrialisation associated radical changes in space with no less radical changes in social institutions. However, we do not know how far these linkages were contingent or necessary. We do not, in short, have a Theory of Society and space adequate to account for where we are now, and therefore we have no reasonable theoretical base for speculating about the future. In this paper, I suggest that a major reason for this theoretical deficit is that most previous attempts to build a Theory of Society and space have looked at Society and tried to find space in its output. The result has been that the constructive role of space in creating and sustaining Society has not been brought to the fore, or if it has, only in a way that is too general to permit the detailed specification of mechanisms. In this paper, I try to reverse the normal order of things by looking first at space and trying to discern Society through space: by looking at Society through the prism of space. Through this I try to define key mechanisms linking space to Society and then use these to suggest how the questions about the future of cities and societies might be better defined.
