    Abstract:

    We propose a unified fusion framework for time-related rank, applied to find valuable posts or recommend answers in Threaded Discussion communities. In our model, we simultaneously consider the special structure and semantics of Threaded Discussion communities. As for the structure, we construct a time-related rank model with respect to reply posts analysis and attain an initial rank result. Concurrently, we reconstruct semantic trees from raw statistical features (e.g. term frequency and document length) to latent semantics and topics. With a more robust similarity computation, we produce several semantic trees. For each tree, we again compute the time-related rank score and get a series of rank results. Finally, we fuse our results in the unified fusion framework incorporating quality measures to make a final decision. Our model can be easily extended when new features or models are added. Experimental results show that our model contributes satisfactory results.

  • Comparing the use of a social annotation tool and a Threaded Discussion forum to support online Discussions

    Abstract:

    Abstract This study aimed to understand how a Threaded forum and asocial annotation tool, Diigo, supported online Discussions. Forty-five pre-service teachers in two sections of an undergraduate course participated in two online Discussion activities. A crossover study was conducted to examine student participation and interaction, and students' perceived learning experience in the two environments. In the first activity, students in Section A used Diigo for the online Discussion while students in Section B used a Threaded Discussion forum. In the second activity, the two sections switched their online Discussion environments. A participatory survey was administered at the end of the study. Postings in the two activities were analyzed and compared in terms of participation, focus, and interaction types. The results indicated that the different design of the two activities and the different functions of two environments impacted student participation, knowledge construction processes, and the foci of Discussions. Social annotation tools could be used as an alternative environment to encourage certain types of interaction during online Discussions.

    Abstract:

    Web annotation is a Web 2.0 technology that allows learners to work collaboratively on web pages or electronic documents. This study explored the use of Web annotation as an online Discussion tool by comparing it to a traditional Threaded Discussion forum. Ten graduate students participated in the study. Participants had access to both a Web annotation tool and a Threaded forum when having Discussion on a given topic and were free to use either tool or both to post their comments. A case study method was adopted. The analysis of participant posts and participant survey responses showed that both the Threaded forum and the Web annotation tool successfully supported interactions and knowledge construction during the online Discussion. The Web annotation tool had advantages in locating specific information on the websites and making content-specific Discussions, and the Discussion forum was more suitable for posting summarized comments. While participants were more likely to offer alternative or complementary views in the Discussion forum, self-reflection was the major type of knowledge construction behavior when participants used the Web annotation tool.

    Abstract:

    The purpose of this study was to improve the quality of students' online Discussion of assigned readings in an online course. To improve the focus, depth, and connectedness of online Discussion, the first author designed a text-focused Wiki that simultaneously displayed the assigned reading and students' comments side by side in adjacent columns. In the text-focused Wiki, students were able to read the assigned text in the left column and type their comments or questions in the right column adjacent to the sentence or passage that sparked their interest. In post-participation surveys, data were gathered about students' experiences in the text-focused Wiki and prior experiences in Threaded Discussion forums. Students reported more focus, depth, flow, idea generation, and enjoyment in the text-focused Wiki.

    Abstract This article describes an experimental study that evaluated differences in students' discourse and actions when they used a wiki with Discussion (i.e., an enhanced wiki) vs. a forum with attached MS Word documents for asynchronous collaboration on two case problems. The study used a counterbalanced within-subject design with 34 online learners working in small groups. A systematic content analysis of learners' interactions coupled with visual, analytical techniques showed within-group differences in using the technologies. The study revealed the expanding nature of a forum and the condensing nature of a wiki. Also, findings suggest that in a wiki, groups tend to be more collaborative, whereas in a Threaded Discussion, groups tend to be more cooperative. The study provides insights for instructors who use wikis and forums in their online courses to support collaborative problem-based activity.

    A lot of studies have investigated the isolated use of Threaded Discussion and wiki technologies to facilitate collaboration in online learning settings. Nevertheless, the integration of both technologies into a potentially superior collaborative learning tool has not been explicitly investigated. This manuscript reports on an effort to undertake the merging and cooperation of wiki and Threaded Discussion technologies into a more sophisticated technology that better supports collaboration during problem-based activity in computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) settings. Two customized collaboration technologies were investigated for their affordances to support students’ cognitive processes and interactions during the construction of a group solution to an authentic problem.   • Online Collaborative Learning: The Promise of Wikis

    Abstract:

    This manuscript presents a pilot study investigating the affordances of wikis to support collaborative learning in online settings, compared to current asynchronous Threaded Discussion tools. The study was conducted with 21 graduate students enrolled in an online learning theories course. Innovative methodologies were utilized -- computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) and chronologicallyoriented representations of discourse and tool-related activity (CORDTRA) -- to study discourse and technology use as students worked in groups to analyze a case. The study revealed results in favor of the wiki technology suggesting that wiki groups tend to be more collaborative, rather than cooperative, compared to Threaded Discussion groups.

    Investigating the affordances of different web technologies to support online collaborative learning (CL) has implications for future research and practice in online education. In addition to a Threaded Discussion (TD)—the predominant tool used to promote online collaboration today—we used a wiki with 15 graduate students in an online course. Students worked on two different group activities, first using the TD and then using the wiki. We investigated students’ attitudes about their CL experience, as well as differences in their CL processes, after using each technology. Our findings suggest that there are clear benefits and limitations inherent to both technologies. The TD tool was preferred, yet students recognized the potential of the wiki to support collaboration. Practical implications and future directions are discussed, including the need for instructors to support and encourage Discussion as a complement to wiki writing, scaffold and model the use of wikis, and create sufficiently complex group tasks to help make wiki use attractive and appropriate.
