Zinc Toxicosis in a Boxer Dog Secondary to Ingestion of Holiday Garland

Crofton, Joseph HillebrandtAbstract:Introduction Increased admissions occur in small animal veterinary emergency clinics during some holidays, and some of the increased caseload is due to ingestion of toxic substances. This report documents zinc toxicosis contributing to the death of a dog after ingestion of holiday Tinsel garland. Case study A mature boxer dog presented with a 4-day history of vomiting and diarrhea. Radiodense foreign material was detected in the stomach and removed via gastrotomy. The patient clinically worsened over the next several days with evidence of hemolytic anemia, severe hypernatremia, and an elevated WBC count with a suspected dehiscence of the surgical site and acute renal failure. The serum zinc concentration was moderately elevated. Postmortem findings included surgical dehiscence from the gastrotomy and enterotomy sites, hepatic extramedullary hematopoiesis, hemoglobinuric nephrosis, and pancreatic fibrosis. The foreign material removed from the stomach also contained zinc. Discussion Ingestion of holiday Tinsel garland made from metal-coated plastic film has not previously been implicated in zinc toxicosis. Zinc toxicosis has a good prognosis in veterinary medicine when diagnosed and treated promptly, but the unique source of zinc in this dog contributed to the delay in diagnosis and grave outcome in this case.

Helichrysum italicum: back to medicine from the Tinsel of luxury

(Asteraceae), an iconic plant of the Mediterranean area, has now become also an icon of luxury because of its use in glamorous perfumes and personal care products [1]. H. italicum is, however, also an important medicinal plant, and recent studies have provided the basis for a veritable Helichrysum Renaissance, rationalizing the fascinating ethnopharmacology of the plant in the light of molecular investigations on its constituents and their pharmacological targets [2]. Extracts from H. italicum have the potential to be developed as a novel ingredient for medicinal and healthfood products just like its essential oil has been in perfumery and aromatherapy, but awakening this sleeping giant of the Mediterranean herbal medicine will required a multidisciplinary joint effort. One of the major challenges to be addressed is the establishment a reliable supply chain to overcome the plight of spontaneous harvest that is threatening the wild population of the plant in Sardinia and Corsica, where the most valuable chemotype of the plant grows. A second issue that needs to be addressed is the high variability of the phytochemical profile of the plant, where the concentration of heterodimeric pyrones, the major bioactive constituents of the plant, can range from undetectable to almost 1%. However, low-level design tools and long synthesis times are major barriers to productivity for application developers. In this paper, we explore the potential of a distributed soft-processor overlay, programmed in software at a high-level of abstraction, to deliver a useful level of performance for FPGA clusters. In particular, we demonstrate the use of hardware multhreading to achieve a fast, space-efficient, high-throughput overlay, and compare a 12-FPGA instance of it (12,288 RISC-V threads) against a conventional Xeon cluster on the problem of distributed graph processing.
