    Abstract:

    In networked automation systems, network plays a central role in information exchange. The error in local system will directly or indirectly affect other parts of the automation system, which may induce system or network faults. In this paper, a novel data driven root cause analysis method for the intermittent connection faults, a common but difficult Troubleshooting Problem in controller area network (CAN), is developed for networked automation systems. Using discrete random process theory and quasi-period pattern recognition method, a root cause reasoning algorithm that correlating high level system events with low level CAN intermittent faults has been developed. Experiments had been conducted based on laboratory test-bed for proof of concept, and the preliminary experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is able to find the root causes of the network Problems.

    Abstract:

    Monitoring the reliability of industrial network has become more and more important due to the complexity of the networked systems and the costs associated with the system downtimes. Among the numerous factors that affect the reliability of networks, intermittent connection, a situation where communication lines suffer from short random disconnections because of various reasons, is a frequent and hard Troubleshooting Problem. Hence early detection of intermittent connections is a challenging task for networked system maintenance. In this study, a novel method that models the error frame distribution is proposed to monitor the error events resulting from intermittent connection Problem. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the model under different error injection frequency models on a test-bed and discuss the results.

    Diagnosing and solving Problems in a contemporary data-center can be a daunting task. By merging network topology information with state collection, this poster abstract explores a new way to look at the network monitoring and Troubleshooting Problem. Abstracting the entire network as an entity simplifies the debugging process, making possible comprehensive root-cause analysis and exonerating the network administrator from dealing with many devices, delivering gains in productivity and efficiency. Such an amalgamation allows the translation of a performance query expressed in a domain specific language to small pieces of code operating on different devices in the network collecting necessary state. This merging results in lesser overhead per switch and reduces the strain on devices and provides a simple abstraction to the administrator.

    Abstract:

    The paper proposes a multi-viewpoint system to support human abductive reasoning for diagnosis, prognosis and trial-and-error activities for supervising automated systems. This multi-viewpoint approach interprets the same set of events from the different viewpoints in this set. The algorithms for managing these viewpoints and the set of events are related to hypothetical reasoning, and they use several main functions to (1) select or reject certain events, (2) cancel or recover these events, and (3) manage the consistency of the viewpoints. This approach is applied to diagnosis and trial-and-error activities related to the phone Troubleshooting Problem.
