  • Radio frequency power considerations for land mobile Radio Systems
[1991 Proceedings] 41st IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference, 1991
    Co-Authors: R.c. Shapiro
    Abstract:

The design of land mobile two-way and one-way Radio Systems requires consideration of the power handling capabilities of the System and of the individual components. It is pointed out that a power budget ought to be employed to calculate the power handling capability of the System before construction. Individual component specifications ought to be analyzed and proper precautions taken to ensure a well-engineered System. The power budget and its components are discussed. Examples are used to demonstrate the importance of the evaluation and to prove its relevance to Radio System design. It is shown that the power budget makes it possible to determine that the cable and connector sizes of the combined 20-channel 800-MHz Trunked Radio System are not adequate and require upgrading. This analysis is useful as a preventative tool and as a troubleshooting tool for the Radio Systems engineer, consultant, or technician.

  • The Development of Gateway System for Power Automation based on TETRA
    2010
Co-Authors: Byung Kwen Song, Geon-ung Kim
    Abstract:

TETRA is the standard of Digital Trunked Radio System suggested by the ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institut ). It is adopted as Electric Power IT Wireless Backbone Network in Korea. Police station and Fire Station are using TETRA network. Currently, Power Automation Protocols are DNP3.0 in Distribution Automation System, DLMS in Auto Metering Infrastructure, IEC61850 in Substation Automation. These protocols are transmissions using CDMA or WCDMA modem. If Power Automation protocol uses TETRA networks, it can be interoperable with the Systems in police or fire stations. And it has outstanding ability to handle problems in a disaster situation. So, This paper propose a gateway System of Power Automation which can transmit the power automation protocol using TETRA.

  • Gateway platform for connecting D-TRS in power IT
2009 IEEE PES Power Systems Conference and Exposition, 2009
Co-Authors: Tae Eui Jeong, Byung Kwen Song, Jincheol Kim, Youngeok Kim, Taeku Kang, Sangjin Kim
    Abstract:

TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) is the standard of DTRS(Digital Trunked Radio System) developed by the ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute). Currently, TETRA has been selected as the power IT wireless backbone network in Korea while the traditional distribution automation System has used the wireless network of mobile service provider using CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) and WCDMA(Wideband CDMA) modems. Therefore, the development of gateway platform is indispensable according to the change to the TETRA network. In this paper, we propose an embedded Linux-based gateway platform for transmitting industrial power IT protocol using TETRA network.

  • Building IEC 61850 SCADA System based on TETRA
    2009
Co-Authors: Byung Kwen Song, Tae-ui Jeong
    Abstract:

TETRA(TErrestrial Trunked Radio) is the wireless communication System generally adopted to public network and backbone network, as the technology of Trunked Radio System specified by ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and currently adopted to the Electric Power IT Backbone Network in Korea. IEC 61850 is the protocol proposed for SAS(Substation Automation System) of SCADA(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) System. In this paper, IEC 61850 Server and Client simulator are used based on Linux operating System. The multi-functional gateway, which transforms the communication based on TCP/IP between IEC 61850 Server Simulator and Client Simulator to the one based on TETRA Packet Data Service, is developed such that IEC 61850 SCADA System is constructed based on TETRA.

  • DLMS SCADA System based on TETRA
    2009
Co-Authors: Byung Kwen Song, Suk-hee Lee
    Abstract:

TETRA(TErrestrial Trunked Radio) is wireless communication System generally adopted to public network and backbone network, as the technology of Trunked Radio System specified by ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and currently adopted to the Electric Power IT Backbone Network in Korea. DLMS(Device Language Message Specification) is used in order to meter an electric measuring instrument value. In this paper, DLMS Server and Client simulator are used based on Window operating System. The multi-functional gateway, which transforms the communications based on RS-232C between DLMS Server Simulator and Client Simulator to the one based on TETRA PEI(Peripheral Equipment Interface), is developed such that DLMS SCADA(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) System is constructed based on TETRA.

  • SD(Short Data) Performance Measurement in D-TRS Wireless Network Environment
    2009
Co-Authors: Byung Kwen Song, Geon-ung Kim
    Abstract:

TETRA is the standard of Digital Trunked Radio System developed by the ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute). It is adopted as Electric Power IT Wireless Backbone Network in Korea. To use TETRA wireless network, TETRA modem is very necessary. In this paper, the performance measurements of modem and its results are analyzed according to traffics in TETRA network. In this paper, SDS type-4 transmission method is used in the transmission standards suggested by PEI(Peripheral Equipment Interface) of ETSI. Performance measurements are done by varying the data size and transmission interval. The data size is increased by 10 bytes from 10-byte to 140-byte, and it is measured 1,000 times for each transmission interval of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 seconds. MU-1000MD of Unimo is used for TETRA modem, and SwMI(Switching and Management Infrastructure) of Teltronic is used for switching System in this paper.

  • Trunked Radio Systems: traffic prediction based on user clusters
1st International Symposium onWireless Communication Systems 2004., 2004
    Co-Authors: Hao Chen, Ljiljana Trajkovic
    Abstract:

Studies of individual network users' behavior patterns may seem of little relevance to predicting the entire network's traffic. Clustering techniques, however, help bridge this apparent gap. In this paper, we analyze data collected from a deployed network and use clustering techniques to characterize patterns of individual users' behavior. A network traffic prediction approach is then developed based on user clusters. We analyze three months of continuous network log data from the E-Comm network, an operational Trunked Radio System. After extracting traffic data from the raw data logs, we identify user clusters by employing the AutoClass tool and the K-means algorithm. Based on the identified user clusters, we use the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model to forecast the network traffic by aggregating the predicted traffic of each user cluster. The predicted network traffic shows good agreement with the collected traffic data.

  • USER CLUSTERING AND TRAFFIC PREDICTION IN A Trunked Radio System
    2005
    Co-Authors: Hao Leo Chen
    Abstract:

Traditional statistical analysis of network data is often employed to determine traffic distribution, to summarize user’s behavior patterns, or to predict future network traffic. Mining of network data may be used to discover hidden user groups, to detect payment fraud, or to identify network abnormalities. In our research we combine traditional traffic analysis with data mining technique. We analyze three months of continuous network log data from a deployed public safety Trunked Radio network. After data cleaning and traffic extraction, we identify clusters of talk groups by applying AutoClass tool andK-means algorithm on user’s behavior patterns represented by the hourly number of calls. We propose a traffic prediction model by applying the classical SARIMA models on the clusters of users. The predicted network traffic agrees with the collected traffic data and the proposed cluster-based prediction approach performs well compared to the prediction based on the aggregate traffic.
