  • full text database dependency an emerging trend among Undergraduate Library users
    Research Strategies, 1998
Co-Authors: Brad S Macdonald, Robert Dunkelberger
    Abstract:

Abstract The ever-growing number of full-text electronic databases and their increasing availability has helped to create greater expectations among the Undergraduate students who use them in their research. A study was made of nearly three hundred students enrolled in composition classes to determine the indexes and databases most commonly used for assignments and whether having the full text of journal articles online played a role in shaping the nature of their research. The survey results confirmed the authors' belief from encounters at the reference desk that students are becoming dependent on the availability of full-text databases and are using them in some cases to the exclusion of all other information sources.

  • Availability and utilization of information and communication technology resources by Undergraduate Library users in Anambra State University libraries, Nigeria.
    DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2019
    Co-Authors: Ferdinand Asimonye
    Abstract:

Inspite of the vital role ICTs play in University libraries, it is still difficult to have access to the required resources. In this regard, it is also difficult to determine the level of availability and utilization of ICT resources in the university Library of Anambra State University. This research titled Availability and Utilization of ICT Resources by Undergraduate Library users is therefore necessitated by the need to create records that will serve as empirical evidence of identified level of availability and utilization of the ICT resources in the Library. To investigate this, exploratory survey research design was adopted, with questionnaire as the tool used for data collection. The questionnaire was constructed and validated in both content and face validity. The reliability of 0.96 was statistically determined by the use of kurdar Richardson correlation (KRCC) formular. The sample size of the study was 378 derived from proportionate and stratified sampling techniques. 378 copies of the questionnaire were distributed to the respondents and (370) were returned valid. The research tested one hypothesis using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and analyzed seven research questions using descriptive statistic (frequency tables and per cent ages). The findings of the work questionnaires showed positive relationship between availability and utilization of ICT resources. Findings of the research show that some ICT resources like computer, printer, scanning, machine, photocopiers. CD Rom Internet connectivity etc were available and that they used these resources under constraints of inadequacy, lack of ICT knowledge by the students, limited work stations, poor service delivery etc. to execute class assignments, research etc. The students did not derive full satisfactory services owing to these constraints. The research recommends the expansion of ICT facilities and adequate financial base, training of students on the use of ICT components, providing reliable power, placing the internet service on regular subscription and employing experienced digital librarian to man the ICT unit of the Library

  • the Library catalog is definitely the best place to find articles overconfidence among Undergraduate Library users
Partnership: The Canadian Journal of Library and Information Practice and Research, 2015
    Co-Authors: Katelyn Angell, Gary Kose
    Abstract:

Beginning in the 1980s, researchers in a wide array of academic disciplines surveyed Undergraduate students to learn if they were overconfident with regard to their knowledge of disciplinary subject matter. The majority of researchers have found that students tend to overestimate their abilities within a certain body of knowledge. Up until recently, most of these projects were conducted in the fields of education, psychology, and economics. In the past few years, several academic librarians have applied these methodologies to their Undergraduate patrons, curious as to whether this population demonstrates similar overconfidence in their grasp of academic research. The present study surveyed 34 Undergraduates enrolled in psychology classes at a large urban university in the United States to determine if these students were overconfident about their knowledge in key Library research areas. These questions included citing and referencing, identifying components of scholarly and popular sources, and developing and applying searches in electronic resources. A general knowledge survey was created for comparison purposes. Statistical analysis showed that students displayed marked overconfidence on both tools, signifying a need for increased Library and metacognitive skill instruction.
