    Abstract:

    In this article, the development of a questionnaire-based Usability Evaluation Method for e-learning applications is described. The Method extends the current practice by focusing not only on cognitive but also affective considerations that may influence e-learning Usability. The Method was developed according to an established Methodology in HCI research and relied upon a conceptual framework that combines Web and instructional design parameters and associates them with the most prominent affective learning dimension, which is intrinsic motivation to learn. The latter is proposed as a new Usability measure that is considered more appropriate to evaluate e-learning designs. Two large empirical studies were conducted in order to evaluate Usability of e-learning courses offered in corporate environments.     Abstract:

    The research presented in this paper proposes a new machine learning-based Evaluation Method for assessing the Usability of eLearning systems. Three machine learning Methods (support vector machines, neural networks and decision trees) along with multiple linear regression are used to develop prediction models in order to discover the underlying relationship between the overall eLearning system Usability and its predictor factors. A subsequent sensitivity analysis is conducted to determine the rank-order importance of the predictors. Using both sensitivity values along with the Usability scores, a metric (called severity index) is devised. By applying a Pareto-like analysis, the severity index values are ranked and the most important Usability characteristics are identified. The case study results show that the proposed Methodology enhances the determination of eLearning system problems by identifying the most pertinent Usability factors. The proposed Method could provide an invaluable guidance to the Usability experts as to what measures should be improved in order to maximize the system Usability for a targeted group of end-users of an eLearning system. Usability assessment of eLearning systems is a necessary and challenging problem.Machine learning techniques are effective tools for Usability assessments.Pareto-like analysis can help devise severity index values.Sensitivity analysis can help rank the most important Usability factors.

    Understanding physician cognitive workflow while using Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and how the user interface interaction can support cognitive workflow is essential to premium patient care. One way to further understand the relationship between physician cognitive workflow and the user interface is through Usability Evaluations. The purpose of this paper is to present, test and analyze a Usability Evaluation Method that is robust and yet flexible enough to understand the complexity and needs of a physicians' cognitive workflow when using an EHR system. Further, our Usability Evaluation Method was designed from the perspective of the physician, rather than an information technology perspective. Important contributions of this study are that we demonstrate a way to evaluate an EHR in the actual cardiac care setting and produce results that identify actionable and realistic system improvement recommendations.

The authors have developed a quantitative Usability Evaluation Method that uses a checklist that outlines an Evaluation procedure and clarifies judging standards. This paper describes this quantitative Usability Evaluation Method that is not influenced by an evaluator's subjective impression. Moreover, such clear and precise definitions makes checklist-based Evaluations more repeatable (thus more reliable) and less affected by differences among evaluators. The effectiveness of our checklist has been evaluated by the experiments with novice and experienced evaluators. This article reports the Method and results of the experiments.

    Abstract:

    This paper provides a high-level overview of the field of Usability Evaluation as context for a panel "Systematization, Modeling and Quantitative Evaluation of Human Interface" in which several authors report on a collaborative effort to apply CogTool, an automated Usability Evaluation Method, to mobile phone interfaces and to assess whether Usability predictions made by CogTool correlate with user subjective impressions of Usability. If the endeavor, which is still underway at the time of writing, is successful, then CogTool may be applied economically within the product development lifecycle to reduce the risk of Usability problems.

    Abstract:

    Recent years have seen an increasing use of sophisticated interaction techniques including in the field of safety critical interactive software [8]. The use of such techniques has been required in order to increase the bandwidth between the users and systems and thus to help them deal efficiently with increasingly complex systems. These techniques come from research and innovation done in the field of humancomputer interaction (HCI). A significant effort is currently being undertaken by the HCI community in order to apply and extend current Usability Evaluation techniques to these new kinds of interaction techniques. However, very little has been done to improve the reliability of software offering these kinds of interaction techniques. Even testing basic graphical user interfaces remains a challenge that has rarely been addressed in the field of software engineering [9]. However, the non reliability of interactive software can jeopardize Usability Evaluation by showing unexpected or undesired behaviors. The aim of this SIG is to provide a forum for both researchers and practitioners interested in testing interactive software. Our goal is to define a roadmap of activities to cross fertilize Usability and reliability testing of these kinds of systems to minimize duplicate efforts in both communities.
