Despite the rapid development of Augmented Reality technology, not much attention has been given to the important aspect of system's interface Usability. To date, some of the methods used in the assessment of common software applications are also employed in the limited number of studies regarding the Usability assessment of Augmented Reality systems. In this paper, we investigate the issue of Usability Evaluation of Augmented Reality systems and we discuss the use of the assessment methods currently employed for traditional applications. Furthermore, we present and discuss issues that arise from their employment in the assessment of Augmented Reality systems and possible ways to overcome these issues.

Perceived Usability Evaluation of Learning Management Systems: A First Step towards Standardization of the System Usability Scale in Greek

Although the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire is considered as a de facto standard for perceived Usability Evaluation, surprisingly, few studies are reporting results from Evaluations related to Learning Management Systems (LMSs). In addition, given that the questionnaire comprises 10 questions presented in English, its applicability in studies involving speakers of other languages is questionable. In this paper, a first step towards standardization of a Greek version of SUS in the context of LMSs perceived Usability Evaluation is reported. To this end, three studies involving 280 university students in both blended and distance learning education were conducted. Analysis of the results demonstrated the validity and reliability of the Greek version of SUS.

Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2006Co-Authors: Panagiotis ZahariasAbstract:In this paper the development of a questionnaire-based Usability Evaluation method for e-learning applications is described. The method aims at extending the current practice by proposing intrinsic motivation to learn as a new Usability measure to evaluate e-learning designs. The method was developed according to an established methodology in HCI research and relied upon a conceptual framework that combines web and instructional design parameters and associates them with a main affective learning dimension, intrinsic motivation to learn. Two large empirical studies were conducted in order to test the method. Results provide significant evidence for reliability of the method. Further work focuses on validation process so that Usability practitioners can use it with confidence when evaluating the design of e-learning applications.

Comparative Usability Evaluation of three popular MOOC platforms
2016 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON), 2016Co-Authors: Alexandros Tsironis, Christos Katsanos, Michail XenosAbstract:Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are becoming widely spread and recent years have seen a substantial research interest on this topic. MOOCs are mediated by software platforms that need to meet specific non-functional requirements, such as Usability. The goal of this paper is to investigate the Usability of three popular MOOC platforms: edX, Coursera and Udacity. To this end, a study combining experimental and inquiry Usability Evaluation methods was conducted. Thirty-one participants were asked to perform five typical tasks in the evaluated MOOC platforms. Study results showed that Coursera was perceived to be significantly more usable compared to both edX and Udacity. In addition, interaction efficiency was significantly higher while using Coursera compared to Udacity. No significant effect of MOOC platform on participants' interaction effectiveness and perceived task difficulty was observed.

The System Usability Scale (SUS) is a well-researched and widely used questionnaire for perceived Usability Evaluation. However, surprisingly few studies have used SUS to evaluate the perceived Usability of learning management systems (LMSs). This paper presents an empirical Evaluation of the SUS questionnaire in the context of LMSs’ perceived Usability Evaluation. Eleven studies involving 769 students were conducted, in which participants evaluated the Usability of two LMSs (eClass and Moodle) used within courses of their curriculum. It was found that the perceived Usability of the evaluated LMSs is at a satisfactory level (mean SUS score 76.27). Analysis of the results also demonstrated the validity and reliability of SUS for LMSs’ Evaluation, and that it remains robust even for small sample sizes. Moreover, the following SUS attributes were investigated in the context of LMSs Evaluation: gender, age, prior experience with the LMS, Internet self-efficacy, attitude towards the Internet and usage frequency of the LMS.

However, Usability Evaluation can be expensive in terms of time and human resources, and automation is therefore a promising way to augment existing approaches. This article presents an extensive survey of Usability Evaluation methods, organized according to a new taxonomy that emphasizes the role of automation. The survey analyzes existing techniques, identifies which aspects of Usability Evaluation automation are likely to be of use in future research, and suggests new ways to expand existing approaches to better support Usability Evaluation.
