    BACKGROUND: Eretmocerus warrae (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) is a parasitoid of the glasshouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). Here, we compare its potential as a biological control agent at high temperatures to that of Encarsia formosa (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), a wasp which is widely sold for control of T. vaporariorum. RESULTS: Eretmocerus warrae attained the highest estimated developmental rate at 31.4 °C and the maximum oviposition rate at 30.5 °C. Developmental times of E. warrae at fluctuating temperatures that simulate night‐day patterns were similar to those predicted based on constant temperatures. Above the optimum temperature, E. warrae tolerated higher constant temperatures than En. formosa during development and as adults. Using a ramping temperature approach, the critical thermal maximum for adult E. warrae was significantly higher than that of adult En. formosa. CONCLUSION: Eretmocerus warrae is better adapted to high temperatures than En. formosa, and could therefore be a complementary or superior biological control agent during summer months in hot regions. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

  • Primary studies on the parasitoid fauna of Coccoidea in cultivated and non-cultivated areas in the east Mediterranean region of Turkey

    The parasitoid fauna of Coccoidea in cultivated and noncultivated areas was studied in the east Mediterranean region of Turkey in 1994–1997. In total, 25 parasitoid species belonging to Aphelinidae, Encyrtidae, and Eulophidae (Hymenoptera) were reared from 21 different scale hosts. On crop plants, mainly citrus and peach, 13 parasitoids from eleven Coccoidea hosts were determined while 14 parasitoid species were obtained from twelve scale insects on non-cultivated plants. Seven parasitoid species are new records for the Turkish insect fauna. Only one of them was found on citrus, while the other six species were sampled in non-cultivated areas. The most common parasitoids encountered were Aphytis melinus DeBach, Encarsia berlesei (Howard) (Aphelinidae), comperiella bifasciata Howard (Encyrtidae), and Metaphycus flavus (Howard) (Eulophidae) in cultivated areas and Coccophagus lycimnia (Walker) (Aphelinidae) in non-cultivated areas. All other parasitoids species were obtained only from a few scale insects hosts. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die Parasitoiden-Fauna der Coccoidea in landwirtschaftlich genutzten und nicht genutzten Gebieten der östlichen Mittelmeer-Region der Türkei in der Zeit von 1994–1997 untersucht. Insgesamt konnten 25 Parasitoiden-Arten aus den Familien Aphelinidae, Encyrtidae und Eulophidae (Hymenoptera) aus 21 verschiedenen Schildlaus-Wirten gezogen werden. Von den Kulturpflanzen, vor allem von Zitrus und Pfirsich, wurden 13 Parasitoide aus 11 Coccoidea-Wirten gewonnen, während 14 Parasitoiden-Arten aus 12 Schildlaus-Wirten von den Wildpflanzen stammten. Bei sieben Parasitoiden-Arten handelt es sich um Neubeschreibungen der türkischen Insektenfauna. Nur eine von diesen wurde auf Zitrus beobachtet, während die anderen sechs Arten aus nicht bewirtschafteten Gebieten stammten. Die geläufigsten der ermittelten Parasitoiden-Arten waren Aphytis melinus DeBach, Encarsia berlesei (Howard) (Aphelinidae), Comperiella bifasciata Howard (Encyrtidae) sowie Metaphycus flavus (Howard) (Eulophidae) auf den bewirtschafteten und Coccophagus lycimnia (Walker) (Aphelinidae) auf den nicht bewirtschafteten Flächen. Alle anderen Parasitoiden-Arten wurden auf nur wenigen Schildlaus-Wirten beobachtet.

    Eldana saccharina W., ravageur majeur de la canne a sucre en Afrique a cause d’importants degâts depassant les 6 % en Cote d’Ivoire dans les perimetres sucriers de Ferke de 2015 a 2017, avec des pics de 30 a 40 %. L’etude vise a inventorier les parasitoides du foreur. Des oeufs, larves et chrysalides de foreurs ont ete collectees a Ferke 1 et eleves au laboratoire. Le niveau des populations a ete determine par les taux d’entre-noeuds et de cannes attaques. Les resultats ont permis de determiner deux especes de Lepidopteres : E. saccharina (98,5 %) et Sesamia calamistis Hampson (1,5 %). Le taux de parasitisme des larves et chrysalides etait faible (7,7 %). Les parasitoides oophages sont des Aphelinidae. La mouche Tachinidae, Sturmiopsis parasitica et une espece de Chloropidae parasitent les larves et Psilochalsis sp. (Chalcidoidae) parasite les larves et nymphes. Les Aphelinidae ont ete identifies pour la premiere fois comme parasitoides oophages des foreurs de la canne. Une augmentation des populations du foreur a ete observee avec un pic de Juin a Juillet. La lutte biologique contre ce ravageur par la production en masse des auxiliaires est une alternative durable aux methodes chimiques, a envisager. Two species of Lepidoptera were identified : E. saccharina (98.5 %) and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (1.5 %). The rate of parasitism of larvae and pupae was low (7.7 %). The oophagous parasitoids are Aphelinidae. Sturmiopsis parasitica (Tachinidae) and a species of Chloropidae parasitize the larvae and Psilochalsis sp. (Chalcidoidae) parasitizes larvae and nymphs.     Las escamas suaves del genero Coccus (Hemiptera: Coccidae) tienen importancia como plagas en citricos y otros cultivos en todo el mundo. Se tomaron muestras de ramitas y hojas de citricos infestadas con escamas suaves en cinco estados de la Republica Mexicana y se obtuvieron cuatro especies de parasitoides de dos familias de Hymenoptera (Aphelinidae y Encyrtidae). La literatura incluye otras once especies, con lo que el total es de 15 especies parasiticas de Coccus en Mexico. Se presenta una clave taxonomica para las especies de Coccophagus (Aphelinidae) y Metaphycus (Encyrtidae), asi como una resena de cada especie de parasitoide.

    A new genus in the subfamily Coccophaginae (Aphelinidae), Mexidalgus gen. nov., is described based on the type species Mexidalgus toumeyellus sp. nov. from Mexico. Morphological characters of the new genus and its differences from the closely related genera Coccophagus Westwood, 1833 and Coccobius Ratzeburg, 1852 are discussed.

    Abstract:

    Aphelinidae is one of the most important families in biological control of insect pests at a worldwide level. The following catalogue of the Iranian fauna of Aphelinidae includes a list of all genera and species recorded for the country, their distribution in and outside Iran, and known hosts in Iran. In total 138 species from 11 genera (Ablerus, Aphelinus, Aphytis, Coccobius, Coccophagoides, Coccophagus, Encarsia, Eretmocerus, Marietta, Myiocnema, Pteroptrix) are listed as the fauna of Iran. Aphelinus semiflavus Howard, 1908 and Coccophagoides similis (Masi, 1908) are new records for Iran.

    Abstract:

    Data on whitefly parasitoids of the genus Aleurodicus distributed in Mexico are given (families Aphelinidae, Eulophidae, Encyrtidae, Signiphoridae and Pteromalidae). Parasitoids of A. coccolobae Quaintance & Baker, obtained in Mexico, are recorded for the first time. A new species, Encarsia nayarita Myartseva sp. n., parasitoid of A. coccolobae, is described, and a key to females in the group noyesi of the Encarsia genus is proposed.

    Four new species of Encarsia Forster (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) from Mexico are described--E. albata Myartseva sp. n. (State of Nuevo Leon), E. barracas Myartseva sp. n. (State of Baja California Sur), E. chichenitza Myartseva sp. n. (State of Yucatan) and E. elenae Myartseva sp. n. (State of Tamaulipas). A key to the species of Encarsia in Mexico published in 2012 is modified to include the newly described species.
