integrating experiential learning and Applied Sociology to promote student learning and faculty research
College Teaching, 2015Co-Authors: Mellisa Holtzman, Chadwick L MenningAbstract:Although the benefits of experiential learning for students are well documented, such courses are sometimes seen as a professional burden for faculty because they are very labor- and time-intensive endeavors. This paper suggests, however, that the time investment in experiential learning courses can be made more efficient if faculty members treat these courses not as discrete teaching moments but as long-term Applied research projects that simultaneously advance students' research skills and faculty research agendas. We discuss our experiences using Applied research and experiential learning as an example.

Reinventing Climate and Disaster Research for Community Resilience Under the COVID-19 Lockdown

The CCARPH enhances the capacity of cities to examine the complexity and dynamics of climate and disaster risks through transdisciplinary action research. Three principles inform our transdisciplinary action research and the crafting of public-private partnerships for resilience: co-generation of knowledge with stakeholders, co-creation of capacities of resilience scientists and practitioners, and co-ownership/co-benefits among partners. These partnerships mobilize science-based, gender-sensitive and socially inclusive resilience planning and development approaches and tools. The scientific community, then, builds climate resilient cities and sustainable communities through collaborative partnerships with national/local government units (LGUs), civil society organizations (CSOs) and the private sector. The first part of the presentation focuses on the accomplishments of the CCARPH project. The second part will highlight the CCARPH innovations during the Covid-19 lockdown. The CCARPH reinvention or recalibration focuses on three major initiatives: (i) supporting the fabrication and testing of disaster resilience technologies, (ii) co-organizing webinars with the National Resilience Council, focused on the resilient recovery of the vulnerable informal sector workers; and (iii) innovating with the National Resilience Council, a dashboard for covid-19 risk management platform anchored on GIS maps and the epidemiological analytics. Finally, the presentation concludes with the key message that university-based researchers are in the forefront of the crisis through their science and technology-based solutions and tools. -- Dr. Porio is Professor Emeritus, Ateneo de Manila University. Journal of Applied Social Science, 2007Co-Authors: Peter F Korsching, Gregory PeterAbstract:Designing stimulating and scholarly course projects for graduate students in an Applied soci ology course is a challenge. We discuss the development and continued refinement a type of course project that involves all students in the course in a collaborative research project and helps them understand the process of conducting and reporting Applied research. Objectives of the project for the students are: (1) professionalization and socialization into the disci pline; (2) experience in defining, developing, executing, and delivering a real-world research project; (3) experience in working on a research team and working with other disciplines; (4) development of critical thinking and the sociological imagination in conceptualizing the project; and (5) output of a scholarly product for the students 'vita. The students define the research problem, identify subjects, develop research instruments, collect data, analyze the data, and write a paper potentially resulting in a professional meeting presentation and pub lication in an academic journal. This paper describes the development and refinement of a course project that involves all students in a narrowly defined Applied research effort with the potential of resulting in a professional meeting paper and an academic journal publication. We begin with a discussion of earlier course project for mats used and reasons for dissatisfaction with those formats. We then discuss the nature and objec tives of the current concept and provide pedagogical theory for that concept. After a brief section on the development history of the concept, we seek to achieve a degree of theory-practice closure. GRADUATE COURSE PROJECTS Having students write papers has been an important component in graduate courses to facilitate comprehension of key concepts, theories, and methods related to the course subject as well as deeper exploration into some aspect of the subject of particular interest and relevance to the student.
