Apristurus breviventralis sp. nov. belongs to the ‘brunneus group ’ of the genus and is characterized by having pectoral-fin tips reaching beyond the midpoint between the paired fin bases, a much shorter pectoral-pelvic space than the anal-fin base, a low and long-based anal fin, and a first dorsal fin located behind pelvic-fin insertion. The new species most closely resembles the western Atlantic species Apristurus canutus, but is distinguishable in having greater nostril length than internarial width and longer claspers in adult males. Apristurus breviventralis sp. nov. represents the sixth species of Apristurus from the western Indian Ocean and the 38th species globally

Cybium, 2004Co-Authors: Samuel P Iglesias, Kazuhiro Nakaya, Matthias F W StehmannAbstract:Une nouvelle espece d'holbiche de profondeur, Apristurus melanoasper sp. nov., est decrite a partir de 53 specimens de l'ocean Atlantique Nord, captures entre 512 et 1520 m de profondeur. Cette nouvelle espece se caracterise par des sillons labiaux superieurs plus long que les inferieurs, un nombre eleve de tours dans la valvule spirale, un abdomen long, de grands denticules dermiques et une coloration noire du corps. Parmi les especes de l'Atlantique Nord, Apristurus laurussonii est l'espece la plus proche, mais elle s'en distingue par la combinaison des caracteres suivants : espace interorbitaire 1,9 a 3,5 fois plus grand que le diametre horizontal de l'oeil, espace entre l'extremite des nageoires pectorales et les nageoires pelviennes 1,3 a 2,5 fois plus grand que la largeur des nageoires pectorales ; grands denticules dermiques donnant une texture tres rugueuse a la peau et coloration du corps noire. Une sequence de l'ADN mitochondriale de 1500 nucleotides de cette espece presente 28 differences lorsqu'elle est alignee avec la sequence d'A. laurussonii.
