Structure and Organisation of Small-Scale Freshwater Fisheries: Aquarium Fish Collection in Western Amazonia

CoomesAbstract:Small-scale Fisheries in developing countries are often vital to the livelihoods of the rural poor, yet the dynamic and variable nature of household engagement in local Fisheries remains poorly understood. This paper describes a small-scale Fishery for Aquarium Fish in two proximate villages of the Peruvian Amazon, and explains observed differences within and between villages in participation, reliance and organisation of the Fishery. A framework is developed to guide the systematic description and characterisation of small-scale Fisheries organisation in Amazonia and beyond. An improved understanding of the socioeconomic factors that shape the organisation of artisanal freshwater Fisheries promises to better inform research and management initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable local Fisheries and poverty reduction among Fishers.

Aquarium Fish exploitation in western amazonia conservation issues in peru

CoomesAbstract:SUMMARY The Amazon basin is a key supplier of wild freshwater Fishestothemulti-billionUS$globalAquariummarket, yet limited information exists on the organization of the regional trade, its importance to local economies or conservation impacts. Through field interviews and review of government statistics, this paper describes the state of the industry in Peru, reporting on the scale and value of the trade, the nature of the Fishery and the characteristics and roles of key actors in regional supply networks. An economically important industry is revealed, with 28 firms officially exporting over nine million Fishes worth US$ 2.5 million to 24 countries in 2001, and involving Fish species from 36 families transported from rainforest catchments up to 1100km distant from the export centre of Iquitos. Most Fish are however collected close to the city, with 10 species representing >70% of trade volume. Some 10000 people earn income from the trade, among them many rural poor who depend on Aquarium Fish collection as a primary or supplementary source of cash income. The industry is currently undergoing an important transition towards supplying new Asian and European markets, increasing exports of species biologically unsuited to heavy exploitation as a result, and highlighting the conservation need for improved knowledge and management of the trade in Amazonia.

Potential threat of the international Aquarium Fish trade to silver arawana Osteoglossum bicirrhosum in the Peruvian Amazon

CoomesAbstract:Silver arawana Osteoglossum bicirrhosum are increasingly popular on the international Aquarium Fish market, but the routine killing of mouth brooding adults to collect juveniles for the trade may threaten wild populations. We describe the Aquarium trade and Fishery for silver arawana in the Peruvian Amazon. This is the first such report on the species for South America, and is based on field interviews with trade participants and Fishermen, and on a review of government statistics. The regional trade is large, expanding and valuable (over 1 million juveniles worth USD 560,000 exported in 2001), of considerable economic importance to the rural poor, and in urgent need of research, monitoring and management. Outright bans on arawana Fishing are likely to be ineffective and to destabilize an export Fishery that provides significant part-time employment for the rural poor and substantial foreign earnings. Experimental studies are called for that compare the impacts on arawana yields of alternate Fishing techniques, such as catch and release of brooding males, as a basis for developing more effective management schemes in Amazonia.

With the advent of microarrays and new sequencing technologies it has become feasible to perform whole genome, exome, and transcriptome analyses in these Fish models. Analyses that compare the two Fish models with each other and with data from human tumors have revealed a plethora of important insights. An unexpected high degree of comparability of molecular features of Fish and human tumors has been detected. Furthermore, analyses of the Fish model data have uncovered molecules that have not received appropriate attention in studies on their human tumor counterparts and thus have provided valuable candidates for novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

Pluripotent embryonic stem (ES) cells have enormous potential to study the totipotency and differentiation of cells and provide a bridge linking in vitro and in vivo manipulations of the genome. In this report we describe the establishment, pluripotency and differentiation of medaka ES-like cell lines (MES). The MES cells exhibit stable growth over 18 months of culture with 100 passages using defined culture conditions in the absence of feeder layer cells. They have a normal karyotype and form colonies of densely packed, alkaline phosphatase-positive cells resembling undifferentiated mouse ES cells. In suspension culture they form embryoid bodies, and under appropriate conditions, differentiate into a variety of cell types.

characterization of four flavobacterium columnare flexibacter columnaris strains isolated from tropical Fish
Veterinary Microbiology, 1998Co-Authors: Annemie Decostere, Freddy Haesebrouck, L A DevrieseAbstract:Abstract Four Flavobacterium columnare strains (AJS 1–4) were isolated from black mollies (Poecilia sphenops) and platies (Xiphophorus maculatus), showing white spots on the back, head and skin ulcers. The isolates developed characteristic rhizoid yellow pigmented colonies on Shieh agar and typical growth in Shieh broth. They were Gram-negative, filamentous bacteria exhibiting flexing movements. When compared to F. columnare strains isolated from temperate Fish, it was noted that the four strains originating from tropical Aquarium Fish are more capable of growing at higher temperatures, the opposite being true for the strains isolated from temperate Fish. Biochemical characterization and agglutination tests proved that the isolated strains could be classified as F. columnare. Low minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were found for chloramphenicol, erythromycin, furazolidone, kanamycin, lincomycin, nalidixic acid, oxytetracycline and streptomycin. MIC values were high for colistin, sulfamethoxazole and neomycin. Pathogenicity studies were performed on black mollies. When these animals were submersed in an infective solution of the F. columnare strains, a marked difference in virulence was noted among the four isolated strains, strain AJS 1 being the most virulent one and strain AJS 4 being of low virulence.
