ArchIS: an XML-based approach to transaction-time temporal . . .
2012Co-Authors: Fusheng Wang, Carlo Zaniolo, Xin ZhouAbstract:Effective support for temporal applications by database systems represents an important technical objective that is difficult to achieve since it requires an integrated solution for several problems, including (i) expressive temporal representations and data models, (ii) powerful languages for temporal queries and snapshot queries, (iii) indexing, clustering and query optimization techniques for managing temporal information efficiently, and (iv) architectures that bring together the different pieces of enabling technology into a robust system. In this paper, we present the ArchIS system that achieves these objectives by supporting a temporally grouped data model on top of RDBMS. ArchIS ’ architecture uses (a) XML to support temporally grouped (virtual) representations of the database history, (b) XQuery to express powerful temporal queries on such views, (c) temporal clustering and indexing techniques for managing the actual historical data in a relational database, and (d) SQL/XML for executing the queries on the XML views as equivalent queries on the relational database. Richard (baldcypress) in Louisiana, USA, are in decline because of saltwater intrusion, prolonged flooding, and periodic defoliation by an insect herbivore, Archips goyerana Kruse (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae; the baldcypress leafroller). The objective of this study was to examine the potential for the use of variation in budbreak among half-sibling families previously evaluated for salt tolerance as a means of resistance to defoliation. Four half-sibling families were categorized as either early (FA7, SG2) or late (SW2, VE2) leafing during budbreak. Laboratory bioassays in 2002 found that larvae fed on foliage collected on the same date encountered foliage from early-leafing half-sibling families of an advanced age that was significantly lower in N, P, K, and moisture content and significantly higher in digestion-inhibiting compounds (phenolics) than foliage from later leafing half-sibling families. Environmental Entomology, 1998Co-Authors: Hanxin Wei, Richard A Goyer, Gerald LenhardAbstract:The fruittree leafroller, Archips argyrospila (Walker), was first observed feeding on baldcypress, Taxodium distichum (L. ) Richard, in 1983 in southern Louisiana. Since then, a prolonged epidemic has persisted in semi- and permanently flooded forested wetlands encompassing 100,000 ha. Species and abundance of parasitoids associated with fruittree leafroller on baldcypress were determined at 2 sites in Louisiana during 1994 and 1995, Six species of primary parasitoids were reared from the larvae and pupae of fruittree leafroller, Mortality by all parasitoid species for the combined larval and pupal stages in the 2 seasons was 22.8 and 13.6% at Bayou Pigeon and Norco, respectively, Itoplectis conquisitor (Say) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was the most abundant parasitoid and Brachymeria ovata (Say) (Hymenoptera: Chalcidae) ranked second. The rate of parasitism by 1. conquisitor for both years averaged 13.8% at Bayou Pigeon and 8.4% at Norco. The eulophid Dimmockia incongrua (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) a hyperparasitoid of I. conquisitor. No parasitoids were reared from or found in dissections of egg masses collected in the 2-yr study. Thus, it appears that the absence of egg parasitism and the low levels of larval parasites are responsible in part for allowing populations of the fruittree leafroller to continue at epidemic levels in wetlands in Louisiana.

Journal of Entomological Science, 1994Co-Authors: James R Meeker, Richard A GoyerAbstract:Performance of early and late instars of the fruittree leafroller, Archips argyrospila (Walker), was quantified from bioassays using previously uninfested foliage of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum L.) and two other potential hosts. Initial survival and host preference tests indicated that open morphology baldcypress foliage was more suitable for first instars than either appressed morphology baldcypress or pondcypress. Growth, development, and host utilization indices, based on rearing of late instars, revealed that open morphology baldcypress foliage was most susceptible to defoliation. Late-instar bioassays also indicated that pondcypress foliage was the least susceptible cypress foliage type tested, due to mechanism(s) triggering early termination of larval development. The appressed morphology baldcypress foliage was of moderate susceptibility, apparently because of foliage characteristics deterring its consumption. Journal of Entomological Science, 1993Co-Authors: Jianlin Zhou, Richard A Goyer, Gerald J LenhardAbstract:Calleida viridipennis (Say) and Plochionus timidus Haldeman overwinter as adults under the bark of baldcypress, Taxodium distichum (L.) Richard, (diam. at breast height (DBH) > 30 cm) and black willow, Salix nigra Marsh, (DBH > 15 cm) at a height more than 40 cm above the water level in forested wetlands. Both carabid species were found to be spring breeders, with adults surviving approximately one year. Adults of both species emerged from overwintering in late February or early March when the fruittree leafroller, Archips argyrospila (Walker), caterpillars were active on baldcypress. Carabid eggs were distributed among foliage and host webs from mid- or late-March to late-September with larvae occurring from late-March to early or mid-October. Both carabid species were found to be associated with the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea (Drury), after the univoltine fruittree leafroller larvae completed their development.

Russian Journal of Genetics, 2014Co-Authors: T A Triselyova, A F SafonkinAbstract:The variability of the mtDNA locus COI and morphology of male reproductive structures were analyzed in a monomorphic (Panolis flammea) and a polymorphic (Archips podana) moth species. The level of population heterogeneity was related to reproductive behavior and the feeding range. In P. flammea, in contrast to A. podana, copulation does not depend on particular guiding structures. The continuous character of variation in the number and size of prongs on the aedeagus indicates that P. flammea is monomorphic by these traits. The level of nucleotide variation in the COI locus of mtDNA was also higher in the polymorphic A. podana than in the monomorphic P. flammea, possibly correlating with morphological intraspecies variation.

The increase of the percentage of the vitellogenous oocyte and the decrease of the percentage of the chorion oocyte against the control have been shown. Additionally, increases in the percentage of sterile females and the number of sterile eggs have been pointed out when control females mated with irradiated males.

Males of phenotype “A” prevail. The index of the relation in the abundance of males of phenotype “B” to the individuals of phenotype “A” is 0.01. Forty percent of males caught by sticky traps did not copulate previously. In order to increase the catching of non-copulative males, the knowledge of the phenotype composition of the population and the use of multi-component attractants are necessary.

Russian Journal of Genetics, 2008Co-Authors: A F Safonkin, T A TriselevaAbstract:The groups of leafroller species belonging to the tribe Archipini (Archips crataegana, A. rosana, A. xylosteana-Choristoneura diversiana, Ch. fumiferana-A. podana, Pandemis cerasa, Hedya nubiferana-Cydia pomonella) were divided based on the sequences of the mtDNA COI locus. Within these groups, the pheromone blend composition in the species studied reflected the patterns of using cis-, cis/trans-, or only trans-isomers of the pheromone components in the process of chemocommunication. It was demonstrated that polymorphism of the locus investigated in A. podana was associated with inbreeding, while in A. rosana it was associated with the geographic distribution of the species.

Biology Bulletin, 2006Co-Authors: T A Triseleva, A F SafonkinAbstract:The quantitative composition of sensillae on the flagellum segment in different imago phenotypes of the apple surface eating tortricid, Archips podana, developing on lilac and fruit plants was studied. There were differences in number of chaetoid, coeloconic, auriculate and basiconic sensillae between males of AB and B phenotypes from lilac. In offspring females from male-parents of AB and B phenotypes, feeding on lilac, there were changes in number of short trichoid and one type of auriculate sensillae. The data are discussed with respect to the relation between male phenotype and sensillae number and influence of male-parent genotype on the change of offspring female antennal sensory apparatus.
