    Abstract:

    The life-history method is a valuable tool for social policy research. Taking an anthropological approach to studying policy, the article analyses the usefulness of the method using data drawn from a set of recently collected life-work histories from the UK. These life-work histories document the experiences of individuals who have crossed over between the public sector and the ‘third sector’ during their careers. The article first briefly reviews the strengths and weaknesses of the life-history method, then goes on to analyse selected issues and themes that emerge from the data at both the contextual and the individual levels. The article concludes that life-history work adds to our knowledge of the relationship between these two sectors, and of the processes through which ideas about ‘sector’ and policy are constructed and enacted.

    The evolution of a background space-time metric and subhorizon matter density perturbations in the Universe is numerically analyzed in viable f (R) models of present dark energy and cosmic acceleration. It is found that viable models generically exhibit recent Crossing of the phantom Boundary wDE = �1. Furthermore, it is shown that, as a consequence of the anomalous growth of density perturbations during the end of the matter-dominated stage, their growth index evolves nonmonotonically with time and may even become negative temporarily.     Purpose – Organizational life and policy making is increasingly conceived in terms of a “three sector” model – public, private and “third”. The purpose of this research paper is to examine a little‐studied phenomenon that increasingly characterises societies in both the “developed” and the “developing” worlds. It aims to argue that these “sectors” have permeable boundaries, and that increasing numbers of activists and professionals operate across such boundaries, with important implications for policy and work.Design/methodology/approach – The research paper reports on a set of new ethnographic life‐work history data from the UK, Bangladesh and Philippines to explore experiences of people who cross between, or straddle, the third sector and the public sector.Findings – The paper constructs a preliminary typology of Boundary crosser archetypes for purposes of further analysis.     Little attention has been given to the Boundary-spanning capabilities of human service managers seeking to effectively manage the relationship between public and nonprofit sector programs. This exploratory study begins to identify those capabilities by documenting the Boundary-Crossing career trajectories of senior human service managers and directors in the United States and United Kingdom. The purpose of the study is to identify the lessons learned by senior managers as they reflected, in retrospect, on their careers in both sectors.

    The overall objective of this work is to examine the influence of interphase mass transfer on the composition trajectories in heterogeneous azeotropic distillation. Experiments were carried out in a bubble cap distillation column operated at total reflux with the systems: water-ethanol-cyclohexane and water-acetone-toluene. The experiments were carried out in regions of the composition space such that liquid-liquid phase splitting occurred on some of the trays. In order to model the composition trajectories, a rigorous non-equilibrium (NEQ) stage model is developed. The NEQ model incorporates the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion equations to describe the various intraphase transfers. The developed NEQ model is in good agreement with the experimental results for both experimental systems. In sharp contrast, an equilibrium (EQ) stage model fails even at the qualitative level to model the experiments. For example, for the water-ethanol-cyclohexane system the EQ model anticipates distillation Boundary Crossing when this does not take place in practice. For the water-acetone-toluene system the EQ model does not anticipate distillation Boundary Crossing when this phenomena is found in the experiments. It is concluded that for reliable design of azeotropic distillation columns we must take interphase mass transfer effects into account in a rigorous manner.

    Abstract Experiments were carried out in a bubble cap distillation column operated at total reflux with the system: water (1) — ethanol (2) — methanol (3). This system has a binary azeotrope for the water-ethanol mixture, which leads to a slightly curved simple distillation Boundary between the azeotrope and pure methanol. For certain starting compositions the measured distillation composition trajectory clearly demonstrate that Crossing the distillation Boundary is possible. In order to rationalize our experimental results, we develop a rigorous nonequilibrium (NEQ) stage model, incorporating the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion equations to describe transfer in either fluid phase. The developed NEQ model anticipates the Boundary Crossing effects and is in excellent agreement with a series of experiments carried out in different composition regions. In sharp contrast, an equilibrium (EQ) stage model fails even at the qualitative level to model the experiments. It is concluded that for reliable design of azeotropic distillation columns we must take interphase mass transfer effects into account in a rigorous manner.

    Abstract We show a lower bound for the Boundary Crossing probability P { ∃ z ∈ [ 0 , 1 ] : h ( z ) + B 0 ( z ) > u ( z ) } with B 0 a Brownian bridge, h a trend function and u a Boundary function. By that we get also a lower bound for the Boundary Crossing probability P { ∃ z ∈ [ 0 , 1 ] : h ( z ) + B 0 ( z ) u ( z ) } . It turns out that the bound improves the asymptotic result given in Bischoff et al. [2003a. Methodology Comput. Appl. Probab. 5 (3), 271–287] when considering a trend function γ h , γ → ∞ . The usual tools to obtain Boundary Crossing probabilities are finite dimensional approximations of the above probability. In this paper, however, we use the Cameron–Martin–Girsanov formula to obtain a bound of the above probability.

    We consider a Boundary Crossing probability of a Brownian bridgeB0 and a piecewise linear Boundary functionu(t)−γh(t). The main result of this paper is an asymptotic expansion for γ→∞ of the Boundary Crossing probability thatB0(t) is larger than the piecewise linear Boundary functionu(t)−γh(t) for somet. Such probabilities occur for instance in the context of change point problems when the Kolmogorov test is used. Examples are discussed showing that the approximation is rather accurate even for small positive γ values.

    Let us consider a signal-plus-noise model γh(z)+B0(z), z ∈ [0,1], where γ > 0, h: [0,1] → ℝ, and B0 is a Brownian bridge. We establish the asymptotics for the Boundary Crossing probability of the weighted signal-plus-noise model for γ→∞, that is P (supze [0,1]w(z)(γ h(z)+B0(z))>c), for γ→∞, (1) where w: [0,1]→ [0,∞ is a weight function and c>0 is arbitrary. By the large deviation principle one gets a result with a constant which is the solution of a minimizing problem. In this paper we show an asymptotic expansion that is stronger than large deviation. As byproduct of our result we obtain the solution of the minimizing problem occurring in the large deviation expression. It is worth mentioning that the probability considered in (1) appears as power of the weighted Kolmogorov test applied to the test problem H0: h≡ 0 against the alternative K: h>0 in the signal-plus-noise model.
