growth improvement of aggase2 single crystal using the vertical Bridgman Technique with steady ampoule rotation and its characterization
Journal of Crystal Growth, 2012Co-Authors: Anandha G Babu, P Ramasamy, N Karunagaran, Perumal R Ramasamy, S Ganesamoorthy, P K GuptaAbstract:The polycrystalline charges were successfully synthesized from high purity elemental starting materials by the vapor transport method with the mechanical and melt temperature oscillation. High pure, single phase, free of voids and crack-free AgGaSe2 single crystals have been grown by the vertical Bridgman Technique with steady ampoule rotation. The structural perfection of the grown crystals has been analyzed by high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) rocking curve measurements. AgGaSe2 has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) Technique. The stoichiometric composition of AgGaSe2 was measured using energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The insignificant change in atomic percentages of Ag, Ga and Se along the ingot further reveals that the composition throughout its length is fairly homogeneous. The band gap and melting point along the length of the ingot are studied. The structural and compositional uniformities of AgGaSe2 were studied using micro-Raman scattering spectroscopy at room temperature. The insignificant change in the FWHM of the Γ1(W1) measured at different regions of the crystal further reveals that the composition throughout its length is fairly uniform. As grown single crystal shows very high IR transmission of ∼72% in the spectral range 4000–530 cm−1.

synthesis growth and characterization of 3 nitroacetanilide a new organic nonlinear optical crystal by Bridgman Technique
Journal of Crystal Growth, 2008Co-Authors: M Lenin, P RamasamyAbstract:Abstract Single crystals of 3-nitroacetanilide, an organic nonlinear optical material has been grown by the Bridgman–Stockbarger method. The single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) data revealed the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, which is an essential criterion for second harmonic generation. The crystalline nature of the grown crystals was confirmed using powder XRD Techniques. The functional group of the compound is identified by FTIR spectrum. The thermal stability and its tendency to grow as single crystal in solution and in melt have been identified for the new title compound. The UV–vis spectrum of mNAA shows the lower optical cut off at 400 nm and was transparent in the visible region. The second harmonic generation efficiency was found using Kurtz powder Technique. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the crystal were measured as a function of frequency and temperature, and the results are discussed.

growth of 2 5 diphenyloxazole doped naphthalene crystal by Bridgman method and its fluorescence studies
Journal of Crystal Growth, 2008Co-Authors: N B Balamurugan, A Arulchakkaravarthi, P RamasamyAbstract:Abstract An attempt was made to grow naphthalene single crystals doped with various concentrations, ranging from 0.01 to 0.07 mol% of 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO). The crystals were grown from melts by a self-seeding vertical Bridgman Technique (SSVBT), in a transparent two-zone furnace. In the present work, a flat interface was maintained for all runs. The optimum crystal growth rates were observed as 1 mm/h for pure and 0.01 mol% PPO-doped naphthalene, 0.7 mm/h for 0.03 mol% and 0.5 mm/h for 0.05 and 0.07 mol%-doped naphthalene. The fluorescence studies were carried out and it reveals the possibility of making a crystal scintillator with PPO impurity.

a comparative study on solution and Bridgman grown single crystals of benzimidazole by high resolution x ray diffractometry fourier transform infrared microhardness laser damage threshold and second harmonic generation measurements
Crystal Growth & Design, 2006Co-Authors: N Vijayan, G Bhagavannarayana, Ramesh R Babu, R Gopalakrishnan, K K Maurya, P RamasamyAbstract:Nowadays more attention has been paid to the growth of organic nonlinear optical single crystals due to their high nonlinear optical efficiency and fairly good optical damage threshold comparable to that of inorganic counterparts. The organic nonlinear optical single crystals of benzimidazole (BMZ) grown by the slow evaporation solution growth Technique (SEST) and the vertical Bridgman Technique (VBT) were characterized, and their results have been compared. Characterization has been made by high-resolution X-ray diffractometry (HRXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), laser damage threshold, microhardness, and second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurement studies. The high-resolution X-ray diffraction curves (DCs) recorded by an in-house developed multicrystal X-ray diffractometer (MCD) revealed that the crystals grown by both methods contain internal structural grain boundaries. However, VBT crystals normally contain multiple low angle (tilt angle α ≥ 1 arc min) boundaries due to thermal stress caused ...

growth of organic molecular single crystal trans stilbene by selective self seeding from vertical Bridgman Technique
Journal of Crystal Growth, 2002Co-Authors: A Arulchakkaravarthi, P Jayavel, P Santhanaraghavan, P RamasamyAbstract:Single crystal growth of organic molecular materials by melt growth is plagued by serious difficulties owing to poor thermal conductivity, non-availability of good seed etc. Of all the melt growth Techniques, Bridgman Technique is widely preferred because of the low cost, versatility, easy adaptability, simple instrumentation etc. In the Bridgman Technique the control on the formation/birth of the first single nuclei is still an art and in this paper we have proposed a selective self seeding Technique for initiating single crystal growth. Trans-stilbene crystals have been grown using vertical Bridgman Technique and using a modified ampoule design. Trans-stilbene crystal grown by using conventional method and by the present method were characterized for quality assessment by DCD and time resolution measurements.
