This study was conducted to evaluate the animal performance, temperament, feeding behaviour and Carcass Characteristics of 40 young crossbred bulls (½ Brown Swiss – ½ Nellore) at 10 ± 2.2 months of age with an average body weight of 219 ± 11.7 kg without (control) the addition or with different levels (3.5 or 7.0 g/day per animal) of clove or cinnamon EOs in the diet. The finishing period in the feedlot was 187 days. Animal performance was higher ( P 0.05) in the group with EOs (both levels) than in the control group diet and increased linearly when EOs was added ( P ≤ 0.05). The feed intake of dry matter and other nutrients was higher and increase linearly ( P in vitro were unaffected by dietary treatment ( P > 0.05). The addition of clove or cinnamon EOs did not alter ( P > 0.05) temperament or feeding behaviour. The cold Carcass weight was higher ( P P > 0.05) between young bulls with EOs received clove or cinnamon in the diet. The muscle, fat and bone percentages and fat thickness, marbling, Longissimus muscle area and pH did not differ ( P > 0.05) among diets. The results indicate that the EOs improved the animal performance of young bulls finished in high-concentrate diets did not alter Carcass Characteristics, temperament or feeding behaviour.

Within a completely randomized design, twenty Nellore cows, fed on B rachiaria humidicola , were supplemented during the rain-drought transition period and monitored with regard to weight and body conditions every 28 days. Total forage mass and percentages of leaf, stem and senescent material were quantified in loco. The estimation of forage quality consumed by animals was performed by the simulated grazing method. There were no significant differences between the levels of inclusion of crambe crushed on animal performance or Carcass Characteristics. Replacement did not affect weight, Carcass yield, Brazilian commercial cuts, morphometric measures of Carcass, Characteristics of loins, thickness of Carcass fat, perirenal-pelvic fat and total meat. Replacement of soybean meal by crambe crushed up to 15% in the concentrated supplement does not affect performance and Carcass Characteristics of cows finished on pasture.

The performance of 33 feedlot-finished bulls, 11 for each diet, and Carcass Characteristics were examined. The 27 months old bulls, with initial liveweight 400±2.33 kg, were kept in a feedlot for 84 days, till 484±6.76 kg at slaughter. The roughage and concentrate ratio of the diets was 52:48 on DM basis. Maize silage was used as roughage and maize, soyabean meal, urea, mineral salt and limestone were used as concentrate. The average final weight (501 kg), hot Carcass weight (275 kg) and average daily gain (1.17 kg) were higher (P<0.05) for bulls fed with PRO than for those on the CON (472, 259 and 0.87 kg, respectively), or MON (480, 259 and 0.94 kg, respectively) diets. Dry matter conversion was better (P<0.05) for bulls fed with PRO (8.04) than those on the CON (10.9) or MON (9.72) diets. Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2003Co-Authors: Fernanda Barros Moreira, Nilson Evelazio De Souza, Makoto Matsushita, Ivanor Nunes Do Prado, Willian Goncalves Do NascimentoAbstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate the Carcass Characteristics (Carcass weight, Carcass yield, fat thickness, loin area, marbling and colour) and chemical composition of the Longissimus dorsi muscle (moisture, ash, crude protein, fat and cholesterol) of cuts with or without fat thickness, of Bos indicus and Bos indicus x Bos taurus crossbred steers finished in millet (Pennisetum americanum L.) or star grass (Cynodon plectostachyus Pilger) pasture systems, with mineral or mineral protein supplementation. Animals were slaughtered with an average body weight of 450 kg (Bos indicus) or 470 kg (Bos indicus x Bos taurus crossbreed). There was no treatments effect on Carcass Characteristics and meat chemical composition of cut without fat thickness. The cuts with fat thickness of steers fed millet presented the highest fat deposition. Bos indicus steers presented higher Carcass yield (57.23%) and fat thickness (4.88 mm) compared with crossbreed (53.40% and 3.05 mm). There was no breed effect on chemical composition of meat. The mean levels of cholesterol concentration were 31.41 mg/100 and 37.55 mg/100g of meat with and without fat thickness.

It was used a completely randomized experimental design. The animals were divided into 5 treatments, with 6 replicates per treatment, according to the amount of protein of cottonseed meal replaced by protein of the sunflower cake (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80% of replacement). Carcasses were evaluated and the Longissimus dorsi was removed for analyzes of shear force, color, pH, marbling, water loss by pressure, sensory analysis, chemical analyses and lipid oxidation. Hot and cold Carcass yields showed quadratic distributions, where the best values were found for treatments with low inclusion of sunflower cake. Carcass measurements, as well as cut yields were not affected by the content of sunflower cake. Regarding the parameters of lamb meat, only water losses during cooking and shear force were affected, being quadratic and linear, respectively. The meat was more tender in animals fed higher amounts of sunflower cake. The tasters of the sensory panel did not identify differences between treatments, and classified the meat with moderate odor intensity, good tenderness, low to moderate juiciness and medium acceptability. The replacement of cottonseed meal protein by sunflower cake protein in the levels used, did not affect the majority of the Carcass Characteristics and the meat quality

Forty-eight male goat kids were divided into four groups. The control group received a conventional diet and the test groups received, on dry matter basis, 200 g/kg of olive cake (OC), 160 g/kg of cactus cladodes (CC), or 80 g/kg OC and 80 g/kg CC (OC + CC) respectively. During the experiment, the dry matter intake (DMI) and the average daily gain (ADG) were determined. At the end of the trial, all animals were slaughtered and the Carcass quality was characterized. Samples of longissimus dorsi and semimembranosus were collected to determine meat quality. Nutritional supplements fortified with oils from canola, flaxseed, safflower and rice bran enhance feedlot performance and Carcass Characteristics of Australian prime lambs

The tested hypothesis was that supplementation of lambs with a variety of dietary oil based PUFA enriched pellets would enhance growth and Carcass Characteristics compared with the control lambs on lucerne only. Seventy-two, 6 months old White Suffolk x Corriedale first-cross prime lambs with an average liveweight (LWT) of 35.7 ± 0.9 kg were allocated to six treatment groups in a completely randomised experimental design. The treatments were: (1) control: lucerne hay only; or lucerne hay plus wheat-based pellets infused with 50 ml/kg DM of oils from (2) rice bran (RBO); (3) canola (CO); (4) rumen protected (RPO); (5) flaxseed (FO) and (6) safflower (SO) dietary sources. All lambs had ad libitum access to lucerne hay and clean fresh water. Supplemented lambs were fed 1kg of pellet/head/day for 10 weeks. Feed intake, final LWT, average daily gain (ADG), body conformation and Carcass Characteristics of lambs in the supplemented groups were all greater than for the control group. SO lambs had the lowest ADG of 190.3 g/day. RBO and CO treatments had the lowest feed cost per unit gain of AU$ 3.0/kg. Supplemented lambs had similar over the hooks (OTH) incomes that were all higher than that of the control group. This empirical evidence-based data demonstrated that supplementation of lambs with RBO and CO had comparatively lower feed costs without compromising ADG, Carcass Characteristics and OTH income

Growth performance and Carcass Characteristics of Australian prime lambs supplemented with pellets containing canola oil or flaxseed oil
'CSIRO Publishing', 2018Co-Authors: Nguyen Don, Malau-aduli, Bunmi S., Nichols, Peter D., Malau-aduli, Aduli E.o.Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of enriched omega-3 oil supplemental pellets, breed and gender on lamb liveweight (LWT), body conformation and Carcass Characteristics, and to assess the relationships between body conformation and growth under an intensive finishing condition. Sixty ewe and wether prime lambs 7 months old were randomly allocated to one of five dietary treatments: no oil inclusion (Control); 2.5% canola oil; 5% canola oil; 2.5% flaxseed oil and 5% flaxseed oil, balanced by breed (purebred Merinos (M × M) and Corriedale × Merino (C × M) and White Suffolk × Corriedale (W × C) first crosses). Lambs were individually supplemented with 1 kg pellets per day and had free access to lucerne hay and water throughout the 7-week feeding trial, after a 3-week adaptation. Dietary oil inclusion did not cause significant differences in daily feed intake, growth performance and Carcass Characteristics (P > 0.05). However, first-cross W × C lambs had significantly higher feed intake, chest girth and body conformation score (P < 0.05) than M × M and C × M lambs. Carcass weight, dressing percentage and fat depth of crossbred lambs were significantly higher than those of M × M (P < 0.05). Significant interactions between oil inclusion and breed on average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio were observed. There were positive and highly significant correlations among LWT, ADG and body conformation measurements (P < 0.01). These findings suggest that prime lamb producers can better manage and match their breeding goals with feed resources by supplementing first-cross C × M lambs with pellets containing 5% canola oil or feeding first-cross W × C lambs with 5% flaxseed oil pellets during the 10-week intensive finishing period

Twenty-nine intact males were used, weighing 23.63 ± 2.44 kg, at 80 days of age, distributed randomly, submitted to five diets, with the diets differing in the levels of substitution of soybean meal by soybean cake (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%). Each diet was provided to six animals, except the 25% diet, in which five animals were used. Carcass Characteristics were evaluated, and the Longissimus dorsi was removed for meat quality analysis. The different levels of soybean cake did not affect Carcass Characteristics. Regarding the Characteristics of meat, there was a quadratic effect for the shear force and negative linear effect on flavor intensity, but no significant differences on the other parameters were observed. Replacement of soybean meal for soybean cake can be made without affecting most of the Carcass and meat Characteristics, and high levels of soybean cake in the diet can improve the meat sensorial quality of lambs receiving concentrated diets.
