Journal of Applied Ecology, 1996Co-Authors: Takao Itioka, Tamiji InoueAbstract:The effects of an attendant ant (Lasius niger) on the host-parasitoid system of the red wax scale insect (Ceroplastes rubens) and its parasitoid wasp (Anicetus beneficus) and in relation to biological control efficiency of the wasp were examined by behavioural field observations, ant exclusion experiments in the field, and field censuses of the host population density and the percentage of parasitism. Parasitoids were frequently observed to interrupt their ovipositional behaviour due to interactions with ants attending host aggregations. Ant-exclusion experiments revealed that ant-attendance caused a decrease in the percentage parasitism and consequently an increase in the growth rate of the host population. The results of field censuses showed that, under the natural conditions in which some generalist ant species usually attended the host aggregations, host density remained at a high level or gradually increased over a 5-year period. Inverse density dependence was detected in the parasitism, which was expected from the density-biased defensive effects of ant-attendance. Overall, these results indicate that ant-attendance on C. rubens restricts the ovipositional ability of the parasitoid and thus reduces the effectiveness of the parasitoid as a control agent of C. rubens.

Density-dependent ant attendance and its effects on the parasitism of a honeydew-producing scale insect, Ceroplastes rubens
Oecologia, 1996Co-Authors: Takao Itioka, Tamiji InoueAbstract:The intensity of attendance by a honeydew-foraging ant, Lasuis niger , on the red wax scale insect, Ceroplastes rubens , was estimated at different manipulated densities in the field. The time that individual ants were present and the total attendance time (seconds x number of ants) of ants on scale-infested twigs significantly increased as the density of C. rubens increased, i.e. ant attendance was density dependent. To determine the effects of density dependence of ant attendance on parasitism of C. rubens by Anicetus beneficus , we measured parasitism rates in the field at different density levels of C. rubens both with ant attendance and with ants excluded. Parasitism rates were higher when ants were excluded, at each density level. Although the parasitism rate significantly deceased as scale density increased, whether or not ants attended, the difference in parasitism rate between density levels was strikingly less without ant attendance. Therefore, the density-dependent decrease of parasitism rate was more pronounced with ant attendance. Mortality not due to parasitism showed density dependence in both conditions and did not change when ants were excluded. These results indicate that attending ants reduce parasitism and that, as a consequence of the density dependence of ant attendance, the efficiency of reduction of parasitism by ants is enhanced at higher densities of C. rubens .

Loch, Myron P ZaluckiAbstract:The degree and distribution of parasitisation in relation to densities of pink wax scale, Ceroplastes rubens Maskell, on umbrella trees, Schefflera actinophylla (Endl.), in south-eastern Queensland were investigated to determine whether scale outbreaks could be attributed, in part, to low levels of parasitisation. Rates of parasitisation were independent of or inversely dependent on host density, and highly variable, especially at low densities. The absence of density dependent parasitisation may occur as a result of: (i) non-aggregation by parasitoids; (ii) aggregation by parasitoids where parasitisation is limited by intrinsic or extrinsic factors; and/or (iii) high rates of hyperparasitisation.

Natural Enemies of Pink Wax Scale, Ceroplastes rubens Maskell (Hemiptera: Coccidae), on Umbrella Trees in Southeastern Queensland

LochAbstract:The natural enemy complex of pink wax scale, Ceroplastes rubens, on umbrella trees, Schefflera actinophylla, in southeastern Queensland was investigated. An introduced encyrtid, Anicetus beneficus, was the major primary parasitoid, although high rates of hyperparasitisation by the native encyrtid Coccidoctonus dubius were recorded. Predators and other parasitoids were minor components of the natural enemy complex of C. rubens. Implications of this study's findings on the biological control of C. rubens in citrus by A. beneficus are discussed.

Loch, Myron P ZaluckiAbstract:We investigated some of the factors that may lead to outbreaks of pink wax scale, Ceroplastes rubens Maskell, on umbrella trees, Schefflera actinophylla (Endl.). Estimates of birth and death rates of pink wax scale were high and variable within and among trees; variation in these rates was not related to scale density. Adult fecundity correlated significantly but weakly with adult test length; mean fecundity was 292 eggs per female with a range of 5-1178. Adult test length and its variance decreased weakly with increasing density. Field experiments showed that mortality of C. rubens is greatest during the first 24 hours after hatching when approximately half disappear. The rate of loss decreases over time with 0.3% of initial motile first-instar nymphs surviving to maturity. Rates of loss varied significantly between trees, indicating that some trees are more suitable for scale colonisation and survival.

Loch, Myron P ZaluckiAbstract:The spatial pattern of outbreaks of pink wax scale, Ceroplastes rubens Maskell, within and among umbrella trees, Schefflera actinophylla (Endl.), in southeastern Queensland was investigated. Pink wax scale was common on S. actinophylla, with approximately 84% of trees positive for scale and 14% of bees recording outbreak densities exceeding 0.4 adults per leaflet. Highly aggregated distributions of C. rubens occur within and among umbrella trees. Clumped distributions within trees appear to result from variable birth and death rates and limited movement of first instar crawlers. The patchy distribution of pink wax scale among trees is probably a consequence of variation in dispersal success of scale, host and environmental suitability for establishment and rates of biological control. Pink wax scale was more prevalent on trees in roadside positions and in exposed situations, indicating that such trees are more suitable and/or susceptible to scale colonisation.

1995Co-Authors: A. D. LochAbstract:Biological control: the use of living organisms (natural enemies) to control other living organisms (pests) is usually unsuccessful (Hokkanen 1985). Biological control of pink wax scale, Ceroplastes rubens Maskell (Hemiptera: Coccidae), on citrus in south-east Queensland however, provides a good example of a "success" (Smith 1986). In most citrus growing areas, it is claimed that densities of pink wax scale were reduced from economically damaging levels to nearly zero adults per leaf within several years of the introduction of the parasitoid Anicetus beneficus Ishii and Yasumatsu (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) (Smith 1986). In contrast, biological control of C rubens on umbrella trees, Schefflera actinophylla (Endl.), has not been as successful. Outbreaks of pink wax scale still occur and in some cases these have persisted for a decade or more (D. Smith pers. comm.; M.P. Zalucki pers. comm.). The problem of outbreaks of pink wax scale on umbrella trees is the topic of my Honours project. The aims of my project are to document the occurrence of outbreaks and biological control of pink wax scale in south-east Queensland and experimentally test possible hypotheses for the causation of outbreaks. Project findings are presented in a series of four scientific papers (see chapters 3-6). Chapter 2 comprises a review of biological control theory, especially in relation to empirical evidence from scale insect biological control programs including pink wax scale. Chapter 3 discusses the spatial distribution of pink wax scale in south-east Queensland and outlines factors that may influence the distribution and abundance of pink wax scale. Variation in size, fecundity, survival and mortality of C. rubens within and among umbrella trees is presented in chapter 4. Biological control of C. rubens on umbrella trees is presented in two papers: identification and evaluation of natural enemies (chapter 5) and the level and distribution of parasitism (chapter 6). Chapter 7 presents the major conclusions from the study and suggests research directions for future studies.

(Lauraceae) were collected in the State of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The study was conducted for one year, during October 2008–October 2009. As a result of this study, 34 scale insect species in seven families (Coccidae, Diaspididae, Kerriidae, Margarodidae, Monophlebidae, Pseudococcidae and Putoidae) were collected. Together with previous records, the number of scale insects collected on avocado in Colombia increased to 44 species and to 137 species worldwide. Species commonly collected on avocado in Colombia include Hemiberlesia cyanophylli (Signoret), Pseudoparlatoria parlatorioides (Comstock) (Diaspididae), Ceroplastes rubens Maskell, Coccus hesperidum L., Protopulvinaria pyriformis (Cockerell), Pulvinaria psidii Maskell, Saissetia neglecta De Lotto (Coccidae) and Ferrisia williamsi Kaydan and Gullan (Pseudococcidae). Twenty-two scale insect species are new records on avocado for Colombia of which nine species are new records worldwide, namely, Lindingaspis rossi (Maskell), Pseudischnaspis bowreyi (Cockerell) (Diaspididae), Pulvinaria psidii Maskell, Saissetia neglecta De Lotto (Coccidae), Ferrisia kondoi Kaydan and Gullan, Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Gimpel and Miller, Ps. landoi (Balachowsky) (Pseudococcidae), Eurhizococcus colombianus Jakubski (Margarodidae) and Austrotachardiella colombiana Kondo and Gullan (Kerriidae). Resumen. Se realizó un muestreo de insectos escama (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) del aguacate en el Departamento del Valle del Cauca, Colombia, entre el periodo octubre 2008–octubre 2009. En total se colectaron 34 especies de insectos escama distribuidos en siete familias (i.e., Coccidae, Diaspididae, Kerriidae, Margarodidae, Monophlebidae, Pseudococcidae y Putoidae). Los resultados de este estudio, junto con registros bibliográfi cos, el número de insectos escama colectados sobre el aguacate en Colombia, elevan a 44 especies de estos insectos en el país y a 137 a nivel mundial. Las especies comunmente colectadas sobre el aguacate en el Valle del Cauca, Colombia, incluyen: Hemiberlesia cyanophylli (Signoret), Pseudoparlatoria parlatorioides (Comstock) (Diaspididae), Ceroplastes rubens Maskell, Coccus hesperidum L., Protopulvinaria pyriformis (Cockerell), Pulvinaria psidii Maskell, Saissetia neglecta De Lotto (Coccidae) y Ferrisia williamsi Kaydan y Gullan (Pseudococcidae).
