    2013
    Co-Authors: Rosario Signorello
    Abstract:

• ACII - The Perception of Charisma from Voice: A Cross-Cultural Study
2013 Humaine Association Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction, 2013
Co-Authors: Francesca D'errico, Rosario Signorello, Didier Demolin, Isabella Poggi
    Abstract:

The paper provides an overview of previous works on the acoustic parameters of Charismatic voice and illustrates MASCharP, a scale for measuring the perception of Charisma in voice. A study is then presented on the perception of Charisma through the temporal and pitch structure of the voices of an Italian and a French politician. Results show some cultural differences in Charisma perception and how acoustic features such as pitch (normal, higher, or lower) and types of pauses (short or long) can affect the Proactive-Attractive and Calm-Benevolent dimensions of Charisma. The same dimension of Charisma can be conveyed by different acoustic correlates of voice by connecting them to the dimension of leader extraversion-introversion.\ud Charisma, voice, culture, political speec

  • How Charisma is perceived from speech. A multidimensional approach
    2012
Co-Authors: Rosario Signorello, Francesca D'errico, Isabella Poggi, Didier Demolin
    Abstract:

A leader's Charisma is conveyed by multiple aspects of his perceivable behavior among which the acoustic-prosodic characteristics of speech. We present here a study on the perception of Charisma in political speech that aims to investigate the notion of Charisma and to validate a theoretical framework on a multidimensional scale of Charisma perception. The study points out that a multidimensional approach of Charisma allows to better analyze which factors are related to specific aspects of speech. We finally clustered the Charismatic voice of an Italian political leader in three factors: Proactive-Attracting, Benevolent-Competent and Authoritarian-Threatening.

  • reciprocal interactions between group perceptions of leader Charisma and group mood through mood contagion
    Leadership Quarterly, 2013
Co-Authors: Jin Nam Choi, Stefanie K Johnson
    Abstract:

Departing from the static perspective of leader Charisma that prevails in the literature, we propose a dynamic perspective of Charismatic leadership in which group perceptions of leader Charisma influence and are influenced by group mood. Based on a longitudinal experimental study conducted for 3 weeks involving 116 intact, self-managing student groups, we found that T1 group perceptions of leader Charisma mediate the effect of leader trait expressivity on T2 positive and negative group moods. T2 positive and negative group moods influence T3 distal Charisma perceptions by affecting T2 proximal perceptions of leader effectiveness. The current findings offer critical insights into (a) the reciprocal relationship between group perceptions of leader Charisma and group mood, (b) the dynamic and transient nature of group perceptions of leader Charisma, (c) the importance of understanding negative mood in Charismatic leadership, and (d) the mechanism through which Charismatic leadership perceptions can be formed and sustained over time.
