So far little Research has analysed the role of technology intermediaries in enhancing firms' innovation speed. This Research aims to fill this gap by studying a specific type of technology intermediary, namely the Collective Research centres in Belgium, and by assessing the conditions under which member firms working with these intermediaries experience acceleration additionality. It is found that absorptive capacity of the member firm and the intensity of interaction are important drivers of innovation speed. Absorptive capacity at technology intermediary level is not found to affect member firm innovation speed. The Research has implications for practitioners, policy-makers and academia.

    Abstract:

    Firms have become increasingly open towards collaboration to become more\ninnovative. Opening up the innovation process and letting knowledge\npercolate through the boundaries of the firm is however not a guarantee\nto success. Many small and medium sized firms simply have insufficient\nresources to collaborate on innovation and lack in-house absorptive\ncapacity to capture the results thereof In Belgium the Collective\nResearch centres have specialised in various activities related to R&D\ncollaboration and technology transfer. As such they act as technology\nintermediaries. This paper positions these particular players in the\ninnovation system. Further, it provides an insight into bow Collective\nResearch centres help firms, many of which are low tech SMEs, to build\nabsorptive capacity for R&D activities. In this way this paper aims at\nfilling a gap in the literature, which has mainly focused on technology\ntransfer in high tech sectors, technology transfer from universities to\ncompanies and government initiatives that stimulate tech transfer. We\nfind that Collective Research centres are unique actors in the\ninnovation system, engaging in both R&D and technology transfer\nactivities to an extent that depends on their size, R&D budgets and\nnumber of members and aiming at strengthening the members' absorptive\ncapacity.

  • When do Firms Technology Intermediary Interactions Result in Cognitive Capacity Additionality

    Abstract:

    Governments have increasingly become involved in stimulating cooperation for innovation and R&D and have become less focused on direct R&D subsidies. One set of initiatives is targeted at providing financial support for technology intermediaries. In this paper, we shed light on when technology intermediaries contribute to learning or networking outcomes generated by the firms that call upon them. The results indicate that absorptive capacity of the Collective Research centre does not affect cognitive capacity additionality generated by the member firms for R&D activities, but higher levels of absorptive capacity tend to negatively affect cognitive capacity additionality generated by member firms engaging in R&D related activities. The absorptive capacity of the member firms does not directly affect cognitive capacity additionality generated by the member firms, but the results on mediation analysis show that member firms with higher levels of absorptive capacity use the services of the Collective Research centre more intensively, and generate higher levels of cognitive capacity additionality.

  • Cultivating hybrid Collectives: Research methods for enacting community food economies in Australia and the Philippines

    Across the globe, groups are experimenting with initiatives to create alternatives to the dominant food system. What role might Research play in helping to strengthen and multiply these initiatives? In this paper we discuss two Research projects in Australia and the Philippines in which we have cultivated hybrid Collectives of academic Researchers, lay Researchers and various nonhuman others with the intention of enacting community food economies. We feature three critical interactions in the ‘hybrid Collective Research method’: gathering, which brings together those who share concerns about community food economies; reassembling, in which material gathered is deliberatively rebundled to amplify particular insights; and translating, by which reassembled ideas are taken up by other Collectives so they may continue to do work. We argue that in a climate changing world, the hybrid Collective Research method fosters opportunities for a range of human and nonhuman participants to act in concert to build community food economies.

    There is widespread agreement that current climate change scenarios mean we have to change how we live on this planet. Yet our current understandings of social and behavioural change seem insufficient for the task at hand. In this paper we explore Bruno Latour's notion of “learning to be affected”, and we argue that this idea of bodily learning seems well-suited to thinking about how people can be moved to act in response to the human and nonhuman world that is all around us. We also argue that Research can prompt and sharpen this form of embodied learning when it is conducted in a performative and Collective mode that is geared towards crafting rather than capturing realities. We demonstrate how this might occur through the example of a community garden Research project based on a Collective bus trip-workshop method.

    Collective Research has been emphasised for several years. It takes different forms collaboration among Researchers of the same team, collaboration between academics to achieve a particular discovery and collaboration between Researchers from private and public organisations to pool complementary assets and capabilities. Even if these collaborations appear to produce economic wealth, they can be contrary to the individual interests of Researchers in academia who are selected, recruited and evaluated on an individual basis. This papers deals with this apparent paradox.
