To provide tools for addressing ecological and conservation questions, we developed 14 highly polymorphic microsatellite markers that had between four and 21 alleles per locus in the 25 tested individuals. With the exception of comparisons involving the locus Cm1F5 that also showed heterozygosity deficiency, no pairs of loci were at linkage disequilibrium. Many of the microsatellite loci were also variable in three other serrasalmid species which span the phylogenetic depth of the Serrasalmidae.

Effects of temperature on leucocytes of Colossoma Macropomum and Hoplosternum littorale (Pisces).

The effects of different thermal regimens on qualitative and quantitative characteristics of leucocytes were evaluated in two fish species of the Amazon region. 2. The proportion of circulating types of leucocytes changed significantly in Colossoma Macropomum (tambaqui) but not in Hoplosternum littorale (tamoata) exposed for four-week terms to 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 degrees C. 3. The proportion of circulating lymphocytes decreased significantly in tambaquis exposed to 30, 35, and 40 degrees C. No changes in lymphocyte proportions were observed in tamoatas. 4. Neutrophils were almost absent in tambaquis, except in animals exposed to 40 degrees C. No significant changes in circulating neutrophils were observed in tamoatas. 5. The circulating leucocytes of Colossoma Macropomum and Hoplosternum littorale are affected in different ways by temperature changes, suggesting species-specific adjustments to this parameter.

Sustainability of Harvested Pacú (Colossoma Macropomum) Populations in the Northeastern Bolivian Amazon

Pacu depend on the unique hydrology of the Amazon Basin, in particular the occurrence of annual floods, and require a healthy and intact flooded forest ( varzea) for food resources during the wet season. From March to December of 1999, 128 pacu were collected and aged ( by means of otoliths) from subsistence harvests in the town of Bella Vista, located at the juncture of the San Martin and Blanco rivers in northeastern Bolivia. The age structure of the harvested population implied a healthy and lightly exploited stock and suggested that sustainable harvest is occurring. Population parameters at our site were similar to the neighboring, lightly exploited Mamore River system but differed slightly from heavily exploited stocks in Brazil. Pacu harvested near Bella Vista are of special concern because of poaching and the increasing regional demand for fish, and because the varzea habitat on which the pacu depends is currently threatened by cattle production, development activities, and land-tenure conflicts. As development increases throughout Amazonia, careful management of pacu fisheries and the flooded forest on which they depend will be of critical importance. Resumen: El pacu (Colossoma Macropomum) es un recurso pesquero de importancia comercial y de subsistencia en la Amazonia. El pacu depende de hidrologia inigualable de la Cuenca del Amazonas, en particular de la presencia de las inundaciones anuales y requiere de un bosque inundado saludable e intacto (varzea ) como recurso alimenticio durante la temporada de lluvias. De marzo a diciembre de 1999, 128 pacus fueron colectados y se determinaron sus edades (empleando otolitos) de cosechas de subsistencia en el noreste de Bolivia. La estructura de edades de la poblacion denoto un stock saludable y ligeramente explotado sugiriendo que se esta llevando a cabo una cosecha sostenible. Los parametros poblacionales en nuestro sitio fueron similares a los del colindante y ligeramente explotado sistema del rio Mamore, pero difirieron ligeramente de los stocks fuertemente explotados del Brasil. El pacu capturado cerca de Bella Vista representa una preocupacion especial debido a que la pesca furtiva y la creciente demanda regional de peces y debido que el habitat de varzea del cual el pacu depende esta actualmente amenazado por la produccion ganadera, las actividades de desarrollo y los conflictos de tenencia de la tierra. A medida que el desarrollo se incrementa a lo largo de la Amazonia, el manejo cuidadoso de la pesqueria de pacu y de los bosques inundados de los cuales el pacu depende es de critica importancia.

Influence of UV‐C Radiation on Shelf Life of Vacuum Package Tambacu (Colossoma Macropomum × Piaractus mesopotamicus) Fillets

Lázaro, Carlos Adam Conte-juniorAbstract:The effects of UV-C radiation on the microbiological and chemical quality of hybrid Colossoma Macropomum × Piaractus mesopotamicus fillets were examined daily over a period of 6 days. The samples were submitted to three different packaging conditions: (VP) vacuum packaging; (UV-L) VP+UV-C radiation at lower dose (55.83 mJ/cm2); or (UV-H) VP+UV-C radiation at higher dose (160.97 mJ/cm2). The microbial groups examined presented lower growth rate as well as lower number of colonies in the stationary phase in samples submitted to UV-L and UV-H when compared to VP. The UV-C radiation (UV-L and UV-H) accelerated TVB-N and improved biogenic amine production, while preventing a major production of ammonia in fish samples. The results of the current study suggest that UV-C radiation enhanced the shelf-life of Colossoma Macropomum × Piaractus mesopotamicus fillets by at least 50% by slowing down microbial growth parameters and delaying chemical changes. Practical Applications Nonthermal technologies are being applied as a viable alternative to thermal techniques, frequently used in processing of fresh food products. UV-C radiation is a new nonthermal technique that can lead to superficial decontamination of fresh fish fillets and presents low-cost as well as easy implementation in food processing industries. This technology does not produce any reactivity, chemical waste or undesirable by-products. However, there are few data on the use of this technique in food processing, mainly in fish products. Thus, this study will provide key information for the control of the microbial growth and chemical compounds production originated during vacuum-packed fish spoilage.

Effect of UV-C Radiation on Shelf life of Vacuum Package Colossoma Macropomum x Piaractus Mesopotamicus Fillets

Lázaro, Carlos Adam Conte-juniorAbstract:Abstract Colossoma Macropomum x Piaractus mesopotamicus (CP) is a freshwater fish with greatest commercial importance in Brazil. Fillets of CP are highly perishable food and preservation technology with UV-C could improve food safety and extend shelf life. Fillet samples were submitted at UV-C (55.83mJ/cm 2 ) and examined for mesophilic and psychrotrophic count and biogenic amines over 6 days. UV-C reduced the bacterial growth and number of colonies in the stationary phase; also increase the levels of cadaverine, putrescine and histamine. The results suggest that UV-C enhanced the shelf-life of CP fillets by at least 50%.

Quality parameters of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) and tambaqui (Colossoma Macropomum) gutted and stored on ice for different periods

FreitasAbstract:The purpose of this work was to assess the quality of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) and tambaqui (Colossoma Macropomum) gutted and stored on ice for a period of 19 days. Color, texture, pH, acid value, peroxide value, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, total volatile bases and counts of aerobic mesophilic heterotrophic and psychrotrophic bacteria assessments were performed in the meat of tambaqui and pacu gutted and stored on ice for different periods. We concluded that tambaqui and pacu, when gutted and stored on ice, continue to be fit for consumption, up until the 18 th and 11 th day of storage, respectively.
