    Abstract:

    This paper introduces modeling methodologies to Computer Forensics to provide formalism and structured approach to Computer Forensics activities. It studies how to use UML diagrams to model and visualize various aspects of a Computer Forensics system. It first applies UML to model the basic components of a Computer forensic process and their relationships. It then uses UML to further visualize the activities carried out for each component. The formal graphical model provides a well-defined and straightforward semantics to the Computer Forensics process making it easier to understand by various parties involved.

In other words the questions to be answered are "What incriminating information is present in the system?" and "How did the incriminating information get there?"

    In this paper we examine the emergence and evolution of Computer crime and Computer Forensics, as well as the crisis Computer Forensics is now facing. We propose new directions and approaches which better reflect the current objectives of this discipline. We further discuss important challenges that this discipline will be facing in the near future, and we propose an approach more suitable to prepare for these challenges. We focus on the technical aspects, while at the same time providing insights which would be helpful to better understand the unique issues related to Computer forensic evidence when presented in the court of law.

    Abstract:

    In this paper we discuss the potential role of virtual environments in the analysis phase of Computer Forensics investigations. General concepts of virtual environments and software tools are presented and discussed. Further we identify the limitations of virtual environments leading to the conclusion that this method can not be considered to be a replacement for conventional techniques of Computer evidence collection and analysis. We propose a new approach where two environments, conventional and virtual, are used independently. Further we demonstrate that this approach can considerably shorten the time of the Computer Forensics investigation analysis phase and it also allows for better utilisation of less qualified personnel.

    The two most common Computer Forensics applications perform exclusively on Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, yet contemporary Computer Forensics examinations frequently encounter one or more of the three most common operating system environments, namely Windows, OS-X, or some form of UNIX or Linux. Additionally, government and private Computer Forensics laboratories frequently encounter budget constraints that limit their access to Computer hardware. Currently, Macintosh Computer systems are marketed with the ability to accommodate these three common operating system environments, including Windows XP in native and virtual environments. We performed a series of experiments to measure the functionality and performance of the two most commonly used Windows-based Computer Forensics applications on a Macintosh running Windows XP in native mode and in two virtual environments relative to a similarly configured Dell personal Computer. The research results are directly beneficial to practitioners, and the process illustrates affective pedagogy whereby students were engaged in applied research

    This study is a ten-year synthesis review on running a baccalaureate program in Computer Forensics at a public university in the states. As an emerging field in technology as well as in law and legal systems, Computer Forensics has established its own position in the modern society. Although there are many similarities to introducing a new product or starting up a new company, having a new four-year program in a cutting edge field out of ground and running presents different hurdles and unique challenges. Based on the analysis and assessment on how a baccalaureate program in Computer Forensics has been implemented at a public university for last ten years, lessons learned and recommendations made in the paper are helpful to those who are currently running or about to begin offering or thinking to propose a similar program in an emerging technology field. While the technology never stops advancing, the higher education should continue updating its curricula to prepare its students in adapting to and thriving in this ever changing world.

    Since the beginning of this century, motivated by the demand for professionals in Computer Forensics from the industry, law enforcement, and government in dealing with internal affairs and fighting against digital crimes and terrorism in cyberspace, various curriculum programs have been developed, including certificate, associate, baccalaureate, and graduate programs. In this paper, we will share our experience in implementing a baccalaureate program in Computer Forensics with respects to its challenges and implementation tactics and strategies. We hope our experience will help others not only in developing a program in a Computer Forensics related area but also in exploring a new program in one of the other emerging technology fields.

In dealing with this phenomenon, a new professional and academic field, Computer Forensics, has emerged since the beginning of this century, The growth and advance of the new field has been steady, mainly because it has been following the path of forensic science due to the similarities between the two fields, as well as professionals’ experience and understanding of the field. As forensic science has been challenged and asked to have a major overhaul by a congressionally mandated report recently, where should Computer Forensics go? Based on a comparative study in various facets of both forensic science and Computer Forensics, some suggestions and considerations have been drawn in this paper, which imply that Computer Forensics may need to reposition itself to better promote the field over the long run.

As one of the economic powers in the world and the only Asian country represented in the G8, Japan has been playing a critical role in Asia as well as in the world in fighting against the cyber crime and cyber terrorism. In this paper, we attempted to analyze the current development of Computer Forensics in Japan by reviewing its political structures, legal systems, law enforcement infrastructures, and academic development in Computer Forensics. The result of our study will foster the mutual understanding and promote the cooperation and collaboration between Japan and the world on fighting against the cyber crimes and the cyber terrorisms.

    Motivated by the demand of the industry and the increasing concern in homeland security, a baccalaureate program in Computer Forensics has been developed and begun in fall 2005. This 124-credit multidisciplinary program consists of courses in criminal justice, law enforcement, political science, mathematics, Computer science, and Computer Forensics. A year since its implementation, the program has shown its potentials and strengths, and both students and industries have demonstrated a strong interest in the program.
