Pharmacological screening was performed to evaluate acute toxicity, anti-inflammatory and ulcerogenic effects as well as histopathological changes in tissues of albino rats fed with CPO.Materials and methods: Fatty acids, tocols and total phenolics were analyzed. The acute toxicity test for each CPO was estimated during 14 d. Carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema was used for assessment of anti-inflammatory activity of CPO. Animals were fasted overnight, and via oral gavage given indomethacin (10 mg/kg) or CPO (400 mg/kg) to investigate ulcerogenecity. Histopathological changes in liver, kidney, heart, spleen and stomach were screened.Results: Amounts of α-, β-, γ- and δ-tocopherols in CLO were 1495, 58, 4177 and 177 mg/kg oil, respectively. improving the stability and radical scavenging activity of sunflower oil upon blending with black cumin nigella sativa and Coriander coriandrum sativum Seed oils

Oxidative stability (OS) and radical-scavenging activity of SFO and blends stored under oxidative conditions (60C) for 15 days were studied. By increasing the proportion of BCO and CO in SFO, linoleic acid content decreased, while oleic acid content increased. Progression of oxidation was followed by measuring peroxide value (PV), conjugated dienes (CDs) and conjugated trienes (CTs). Inverse relationships were noted between PV and OS at termination of storage. Levels of CDs and CTs in SFO and blends increased with an increase in time. SFO : BCO and SFO : CO blends gave 8–18 and 22–32% inhibition of DPPH• radicals, respectively. OS of oil blends was better than SFO, most likely as a consequence of changes in fatty acids' and tocopherols' profile, and minor bioactive lipids found in CO and BCO. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Blending of vegetable oil has emerged as an economical way of modifying the physicochemical characteristics of vegetable oils besides enhancement in oxidative stability. Among new sources of vegetable oils, black cumin Seed oil (BCO) and Coriander Seed oil (CO) are of interest and may play a major role in human nutrition and health. At different concentrations of BCO and CO, oxidative stability of high-linoleic sunflower oil (SFO) was enhanced. Furthermore, blends enriched with BCO and CO had a strong antiradical action. The optimal levels of BCO and CO enrichment will depend on the actual application. It is anticipated that commercial exploitation of SFO : CO and SFO : BCO blends will soon be realized.

Oxidative stability of oil blends were better than CO, most likely as a consequence of changes in fatty acids and tocopherols’ profile, and minor bioactive lipids (e.g., sterols and phenolics) found in Coriander and black cumin oils.

Coriander coriandrum sativum l Seed oil improves plasma lipid profile in rats fed a diet containing cholesterol

Seed oil (COR) is a promising oil with high levels of bioactive compounds. Very little information, however, is available on the effect of administration of COR on different aspects of plasma lipid profile in experimental animals. In view of the important implications, the effect of administration of COR and oil blend [a mixture of soybean oil, Coriander oil and sunflower oil (4:2:4, w/w/w; Blend)] on the profile of plasma lipids was investigated in 24 male albino rats placed on a cholesterol-rich (1%) basal diet as compared to rats on a cholesterol-free basal diet. Coriander Seed oil and Blend were analyzed for composition of fatty acid, sterol and tocopherol. The levels of bioactive compounds (sterols and tocopherols) were higher in COR than in the Blend. In addition, the antiradical potential of COR and Blend was measured and the results showed that COR had stronger radical scavenging activity than Blend. In the biological experiment, rats were divided into four diet groups. The negative control group (control) consumed the basal diet (BD) only, which contained wheat starch, casein and cellulose, as well as mineral and vitamin mixtures. To the BD were added 1 g/100 g cholesterol (Chol/group), or both (Chol/COR group) and (Chol/Blend group). The groups did not differ before the experiment, which lasted 60 days. Plasma total lipids (TL), triacylglycerols (TAG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured at day 15, 30, 45 and 60 during the experiment period. Generally, COR and Blend-supplemented diets decreased the levels of TL, TC, TAG and LDL-C in plasma. In addition, significant increase in the levels of HDL-C was observed for Chol/COR and Chol/Blend groups. The results demonstrated that COR, and to a relatively lesser degree Blend, have hypocholesterolemic properties in rats fed a cholesterol-rich diet.

Tocopherols, phospholipids (PL), phytosterols, and phenols are the most important natural antioxidants in crude oils. Processing of vegetable oils, moreover, could induce the formation of antioxidants. Black cumin (Nigella sativa L.), Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), and niger (Guizotia abyssinica Cass.) crude Seed oils were extracted with n-hexane and the oils were further fractionated into neutral lipids (NL), glycolipids (GL), and PL. Crude oils and their fractions were investigated for their radical scavenging activity (RSA) toward the stable galvinoxyl radical by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry and toward 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical by spectrophotometric method. Coriander Seed oil and its fractions exhibited the strongest RSA compared to black cumin and niger Seed oils. The data correlated well with the total content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, unsaponifiables, and PL, as well as the initial peroxide values of crude oils. In overall ranking, RSA of oil fractions showed similar patterns wherein the PL exhibited greater activity to scavenge both free radicals followed by GL and NL, respectively. The positive relationship observed between the RSA of crude oils and their color intensity suggests the Maillard reaction products may have contributed to the RSA of Seed oils and their polar fractions. The results demonstrate the importance of minor components in crude Seed oils on their oxidative stability, which will reflect on their food value and shelf life. As part of the effort to assess the potential of these Seed oils, the information is also of importance in processing and utilizing the crude oils and their byproducts.

The Seeds have been used to treat indigestion, diabetes, rheumatism and pain in the joints. In the present study, an ethanol extract of the Seeds was investigated for effects on insulin release from the pancreatic beta cells in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Blood samples were drawn from the retro-orbital sinus before and 1.5, 3 and 5 h after administration of the Seed extract. Serum glucose levels were determined by the glucose oxidase method. To determine the insulin releasing activity, after extract treatment the animals were anaesthetized by diethyl ether, the pancreas was excised, fixed in 10% formaldehyde and embedded in paraffin for sectioning. Pancreatic sections of 5 µm were processed for examination of insulin-releasing activity using an immunocytochemistry kit. The results showed that administration of the ethanol extract (200 and 250 mg/kg, i.p.) exhibited a significant reduction in serum glucose. Administration of streptozotocin decreased the number of beta cells with insulin secretory activity in comparison with intact rats, but treatment with the Coriander Seed extract (200 mg/kg) increased significantly the activity of the beta cells in comparison with the diabetic control rats. This study was conducted to assess the effect of feed supplemented with black pepper (Piper nigrum), turmeric powder (Curcuma longa), Coriander Seeds (Coriandrum sativum) and their combinations on the performance of broilers. A total of 210 (Cobb) one-d-old chicks were divided into seven groups of 30 birds each. The treatments were: a control group received no supplement, 0.5% black pepper (T1), 0.5% turmeric powder (T2), 2% Coriander Seeds (T3), a mixture of 0.5% black pepper and 0.5% turmeric powder (T4), a mixture of 0.5% black pepper and 2% Coriander Seed (T5), and a mixture of 0.5% black pepper, 0.5% turmeric powder and 2% Coriander Seeds (T6). Higher significant values of body weight gain during the whole period of 5 weeks (p<0.001) were observed in broilers on T1, T3, T5, and T6 compared to control. Dietary supplements with T1, T2, T3, and T6 improved the cumulative G:F of broilers during the whole period of 5 weeks (p<0.001) compared with control. The dressing percentage and edible giblets were not influenced by dietary supplements, while higher values of relative weight of the liver (p<0.05) were obtained in T5 and T6 compared to control. The addition of feed supplements in T5 and T6 significantly increased serum total protein and decreased serum glucose, triglycerides and alkaline phosphatase concentrations compared with the control group (p<0.05). Broilers on T6 showed significant decrease in the serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase concentration (p<0.05) compared to control. The broilers having T5 and T6 supplemented feed had relatively greater antibody titre (p<0.001) at 35 d of age than control. It is concluded that dietary supplements with black pepper or Coriander Seeds or their combinations enhanced the performance and health status of broiler chickens.

Coriander Seed is known for its wide range of healing properties. In folk medicine, the Seeds find use against intestinal parasites. Different studies have proven its efficacy as a larvicidal, bactericidal, and fungicidal. It is generally used in gastrointestinal complaints such as anorexia, dyspepsia, flatulence, griping pain, vomiting, sub-acid gastritis, and diarrhea and in disorders resulting from delayed gastrointestinal transit, including anorexia and indigestion. Coriander Seed is also used as an anti-edemic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, emmenagogue, antihypertensive, and myorelaxant. The Seeds inhibit the electrically evoked contractions of spiral strips and tubular segments of isolated central ear artery from rabbit. Coriander Seeds had hypotensive effects in rats. The results of this study suggest that Coriander Seeds may protect various tissues by preventing the formation of free radicals. Administration of STZ decreased the number of beta cells with insulin-releasing activity in comparison with intact rats. However, treatment with Coriander Seed extract significantly increased active beta cells in comparison with diabetic control rats. Its use has been suggested with caution, because of potential allergic reactions from furanocoumarins. Coriander Seed oil and linalool are of slight acute toxic potential.

Total glycolipids (TGL) were separated from black cumin (Nigella sativa L.), Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) and niger (Guizotia abyssinica Cass.) Seed oils by silica gel chromatography. Different GL subclasses were then identified and separated using high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet adsorption (HPLC/UV). Separation was accomplished using Zorbax-Sil (5 μm) column with an isocratic elution by mixed solvents of isooctane/2-propanol (1:1, v/v) and detection at 206 nm. Methods are described for the analysis of GL constituents, sugar and sterols (ST), using gas–liquid chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector (GLC/FID). A relatively high level of TGL was found in all studied oilSeeds. Six GL subclasses were detected in black cumin Seed oil, wherein diglucosyldiacylglycerol (DGD) was the prevalent component, followed by glucocerebroside (CER). Among the TGL from Coriander and niger oilSeeds, acylated steryl glucoside (ASG), steryl glucoside (SG) and CER were detected. The fatty acid profiles of GL fractions from black cumin and niger Seed oils was generally similar, wherein linoleic acid C18:2n-6 was the dominating fatty acid, followed by oleic acid C18:1n-9. Petroselinic acid C18:1n-12 was the fatty acid marker in GL subclasses obtained from Coriander Seed oil, followed by linoleic acid C18:2n-6. Four ST moieties were identified in black cumin and Coriander SG and ASG fractions, while the fractions from niger oilSeeds showed only three distinct ST peaks. As component sugar, glucose was the only sugar detected in all samples.

The study of Seed oils for their minor constituents is useful in order to use both oil and the minor components effectively. Fat-soluble vitamins (FSV) and pro-vitamin A (β-carotene) are of particular importance in nutrition. Although fatty acid profiles of the selected Seeds have been reported, no data about their FSV composition are yet available. Black cumin (Nigella sativa L.), Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), and niger (Guizotia abyssinica Cass.) Seed oils were extracted with two different solvents [n-hexane (H) or chloroform/methanol (CM) (2:1 v/v)] in a Soxhlet-extractor. An isocratic normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (NP-HPLC) method for FSV and β-carotene analysis using a Zorbax-Sil silica column and an ultraviolet (UV) detector was developed. Isooctane/ethylacetate (96:4 v/v) was used as the eluant for the simultaneous elution of vitamin E, while isooctane/2-propanol (99:1 v/v) was used to elute other FSV and β-carotene. Saponification of Seed oil samples was not required. The Seed oil or its diluted solution in the selected mobile phase was therefore directly injected onto the HPLC column. All tocopherol derivatives were identified in Seed oil samples. The main constituents in black cumin and niger Seed oils were α- and γ-tocopherols, whereas β-tocopherol (575–672 µg g–1 oil) was the major tocopherol in Coriander Seed oil. β-Carotene was measured in high levels in Coriander Seed oil (739–892 µg g–1 oil), followed by niger Seed oil (574–702 µg g–1 oil) then black cumin (569–593 µg g–1 oil). Examined Seed oils, especially niger Seed oil, were characterized by high amounts of phylloquinone (>0.2% of oil content). Retinoic acid, vitamin A-alcohol, vitamin D (D2+D3), and menadione (vitamin K3) have not been detected in all oilSeed samples. The aim of the present investigation was to estimate FSV and β-carotene content of studied oilSeeds. The results obtained show that because of their specific FSV constitution, these Seed oils are promising new oils.
