    Abstract:

    The present laboratory bioassay was designed to determine the predatory potentiality of the bronze featherback, Notopterus notopterus (Actinopterygii: Osteoglossiformes) against the larvae of Culex Vishnui, vector of the zoonotic disease Japanese Encephalitis. The objectives of the present study includes: analysis of the functional response of the fish species against mosquito immature, determination of functional response parameters and the effect of habitat complexity on consumption efficacy of the predatory fish. The results of the investigation revealed that consumption rate of predator increased with time from the lowest number of 650 larvae on the 1st day to 1039 larvae on 7th day. The functional response was Type II having handling time of 0.15 min and attack rate of 2.95. Habitat heterogeneity also showed a significant effect on the consumption rate of the fish. The result of the study suggests that N. notopterus can be effectively used in fields to reduce the population of Cx. Vishnui.

    Abstract:

    This study assessed the predatory potentiality of two unexplored fishes, Puntius tetrazona and Hyphessobrycon rosaceus on Culex Vishnui subgroup larvae in order to utilize natural resources to diminish mosquito population. Larval feeding rate was evaluated in laboratory under varying prey density and volume of water. The experiment was extended to semi field condition. Puntius tetrazona and H. rosaceus consumed from 66 to 600 and from 87 to 718 Cx. Vishnui larvae respectively in laboratory condition at 10 prey density levels (100–1000 larvae) at an increment of 100 larvae at 2 l water volume. In semi field condition, a 78% reduction in larval density was observed at day 30 post introduction of P. tetrazona, whereas 91% reduction was noted on day 21 for H. rosaceus and in the subsequent samples no mosquito larvae were found in ditches. Withdrawal of predators from the ditches resulted gradual increase in larval density. Laboratory and semi field bioassay of both the species indicated their potentiality as efficient mosquito larval predator though H. rosaceus exhibited better performance than P. tetrazona. It is recommended to utilize these natural resources to diminish mosquito population in the countries of their native range.

    Judul : Faktor Lingkungan dan Perilaku Yang Berhubungan Dengan Kejadian Filariasis di Kecamatan Muara Pawan Kabupaten Ketapang, Kalimantan Barat Latar belakang: Tahun 2015, terdapat 79 kasus filariais di Kecamatan Muara Pawan Kabupaten Ketapang dengan micrifilaria rate sebesar 2,5%. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara faktor lingkungan dan perilaku dengan kejadian filariasis, serta mengidentifikasi spesies nnyamuk yang diduga sebagai vektor filariasis. Metode: Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian observasional dengan rancangan case control. Subyek penelitian terdiri dari 32 kasus dan 32 kontrol. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara dan observasi. Analisis data menggunakan uji Chi-square dengan taraf signifikasi 0,05. Hasil: Dari 419 nyamuk yang ditangkap. Tidak ditemukan adanya larva cacing dalam tubuh nyamuk. Hasil identifikasi nyamuk menemukan 6 spesies yaitu Anopheles letifer, Mansonia uniformis, Culex tritaeniorhyncus, Culex Vishnui, Culex cressipes, and Mansonia annulifera. Analisis statistik menunjukkan bahwa keberadaan breeding places, resting places, pengetahuan, dan kebiasaan keluar pada malam hari merupakan faktor risiko kejadian filariasis di Kecamatan Muara Pawan Kalimantan Barat. Simpulan: Faktor lingkungan dan perilaku masyarakat merupakan faktor risiko kejadian filariasis di Kecamatan Muara Pawan Kabupaten Ketapang.   ABSTRACT Title: Enviromental and Community Behaviour Factors Associated with the incidence of Lymphatic Filariasis in Muara Pawan Distrct of Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan Background: In the year of 2015, there were 79 cases of filariasis in Ketapang Regency and in Muara Pawan District, in particular, from 32 cases who contracted microfilariae resulted in Mf rate = 2,5% while for prevalence rate (PR) = 2,18. The objectives of this research were to analyze correlation between evironmental and community behavioral factors associated with cases of filariasis as well as to identify the mosquitos which are being the potential vector of filariasis.   Methode: The research was an observational one with a case-control study. The cases and the control of this research were both using 32 respondents. The data were collcted by doing observation and interviews. The collected data were than analyzed using chi-square test.  Results: From the surgery of 419 mosquitos, it was revealed that the mosquitoes contained zero filarial larvae, while for the species identification, there were six species of mosquitoes indentified, i.e Anopheles letifer, Mansonia uniformis, Culex tritaeniorhyncus, Culex Vishnui, Culex cressipes, and Mansonia annulifera. The resulth of statistical analysis revealed that there were 4 variables associated with the cases of filariasis in Muara Pawan Distict of Ketapang Regency, ie. breeding places (p-value = 0,047), resting places (p-value = 0,007), knowledge (p-value = 0,045), and habit of going out at night (p-value = 0,043) Conclusion: It is concluded that there is a correlation between 4 mentioned variables with the cases of filariasis in Muara Pawan Dictrict of Ketapang Regency

    Kasus filariasis di Kabupaten Ketapang tahun 2015 sebanyak 79 kasus dan di Kecamatan Muara Pawan sebanyak 32 kasus yang positif mikrofilaria dengan Mf rate 2,5% dengan prevalen rate (PR)= 2,18. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis hubungan faktor lingkungan dan perilaku masyarakat dengan kejadian filariasis serta mengidentifikasi nyamuk yang menjadi potensi vektor filariasis. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian observasional dengan rancangan kasus kontrol. Sampel pada kelompok kasus sebanyak 32 responden dan pada kelompok kontrol sebanyak 32 responden. Pengambilan data dilakukan melalui observasi dan wawancara. Analisis dilakukan dengan uji chi-square. Hasil pembedahan nyamuk sebanyak 419 ekor tidak ditemukan nyamuk yang positif mengandung larva filaria, sedangkan hasil identifikasi nyamuk ditemukan enam jenis nyamuk yang tertangkap yaitu anopheles letifer, mansonia uniformis, Culex tritaeniorhyncus, Culex Vishnui, Culex cressipes, mansonia annulifera.     Abstract Insecticide resistance owing to insensitive acetylcholinesterase (AChE)1 has been reported in several mosquito species, and only two mutations in the ace-1 gene have been implicated in resistance: 119S and 331W substitutions. We analyzed the AChE1 resistance status of Culex Vishnui (Theobald) and Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles sampled in various regions of China. These two species displayed distinct mutations leading to AChE1 insensitivity; the 119S substitution in resistant C. Vishnui mosquitoes and the 331W substitution in resistant C. tritaeniorhynchus. A biochemical test was validated to detect the 331W mutation in field samples. The comparison of the recombinant G119S and 331W mutant proteins produced in vitro with the AChE1 extracted from resistant mosquitoes indicated that the AChE1 insensitivity observed could be specifically attributed to these substitutions.     International audienceA large-scale cross-sectional seroprevalence study of dengue (DEN) and Japanese encephalitis (JE) was conducted in Khammouane province, Lao PDR, as part of the initial baseline health impact assessment of the Nam Theun 2 hydroelectric dam construction project. Health surveys were performed between May 2007 and February 2008 with serum samples collected from healthy individuals involved in the resettlement program of 16 villages (total surveyed population 4,369). Hemagglutination inhibition assay using flavivirus antigens (DENV1, DENV3, and JEV) performed on 1,708 plasma specimens revealed 30.4% (519) cross-reactive positives, and 10% (172) and 1.3% (22) positives to JEV or DENV, respectively. Entomological surveys conducted during the rainy season of 2008 indicated the presence of competent flavivirus vectors (Culex Vishnui group and Aedes albopictus), although Aedes aegypti was not found. Continued surveillance and investigation is warranted to assess the clinical disease burden of flaviviruses in this area that is undergoing rapid ecological and demographic change
