  • Fine needle aspiration Cytodiagnosis of sialadenitis with crystalloid formation
    Pathology, 1997
    Co-Authors: Raj K. Gupta
    Abstract:

Summary Two cases of sialadenitis with crystalloid formation are here described in which the diagnosis was made by fine needle aspiration cytology. In both cases the enlargement of salivary gland clinically mimicked a neoplasm and the aspiration Cytodiagnosis resulted in conservative management and avoided unnecessary surgery.

  • Aspiration Cytodiagnosis of mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the pancreas
    Pathology, 1993
    Co-Authors: Raj K. Gupta, Abdul G. Al-ansari
    Abstract:

A case of mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the pancreas is described in which the Cytodiagnosis was made from aspirated material which was obtained under computed tomography (CT) guidance. The case presented further supports the view that aspiration Cytodiagnosis of mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (an uncommon pancreatic tumor) can be made with confidence when performed with imaging assistance.

  • Fine-needle aspiration Cytodiagnosis of breast masses in pregnant and lactating women and its impact on management.
    Diagnostic cytopathology, 1993
Co-Authors: Raj K. Gupta, Carl S. Dowle, Andrew G. R. Mchutchison, John Simpson
    Abstract:

We reviewed our experience with 9,726 cases of fine-needle aspiration cytology of the breast that were done from January 1983 to February 1992. During our review, we found that 214 aspirates had been submitted from pregnant and lactating women for the investigation of breast mass(es). Despite a variable clinical presentation and spectrum of cytologic findings, we considered the application of aspiration cytology in these women as useful as in the nonpregnant-nonlactating women for management decision. A team approach between the clinician and cytopathologist was always maintained; with this approach, the false-positive or -negative diagnoses were reduced to almost nil. In all cases in which the Cytodiagnosis of carcinoma of breast was made, the findings corresponded with subsequent cell blocks from the aspirate and tissue examination. Benign lesions were diagnosed cytologically with minimal difficulty, and all aspirates that were less than optimal for Cytodiagnosis were repeated to minimize the chance of missing an abnormality. All the benign lesions were followed throughout pregnancy, postpartum, and thereafter; if the mass persisted, the aspiration was repeated. With this protocol of follow-up, the need for a customary liberal surgical biopsy was reduced to a minimum.

  • Diagnosis of Metastatic Pleomorphic Giant Cell Carcinoma of the Pancreas Using Fine Catheter Aspiration Cytology
    Cytopathology, 1992
Co-Authors: Raj K. Gupta, Robert Fauck, St. John Wakefield
    Abstract:

The value of fine catheter aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of metastatic tumours is illustrated by a case of pleomorphic giant cell carcinoma of the pancreas which had metastasized to the peritoneal cavity. the finding of unequivocal malignant cells obviated the need for further diagnostic procedures. Electron microscopy and immunostaining further substantiated the light microscopic Cytodiagnosis and identified the tumour type and source of the primary tumour. Furthermore, subsequent cell block preparation from the aspirated material demonstrated the histological features of this tumour.

  • Osteitis fibrosa cystica (brown tumor) in a patient with renal transplantation. Report of a case with aspiration Cytodiagnosis.
    Acta cytologica, 1992
    Co-Authors: Raj K. Gupta
    Abstract:

The cytologic findings from fine needle aspiration of a left shoulder mass are described for a woman who had undergone renal transplantation and on whom an orthopedic consultation suggested the clinical possibility of a soft tissue sarcoma. The aspirate samples from multiple sites in the mass showed several multinucleate, osteoclast-type giant cells, spindly or fibrillary cells with ovoid nuclei and a significant amount of granular calcium. The needle aspiration Cytodiagnosis was of critical importance since it saved the patient from invasive surgical intervention. This case emphasizes the role of needle aspiration cytology in providing a rapid Cytodiagnosis of osteitis fibrosa cystica with a minimally invasive method.

  • Fine needle Cytodiagnosis of renal tuberculosis.
    The Journal of urology, 1991
    Co-Authors: J. Baniel, A. Manning, Gladwyn Leiman
    Abstract:

AbstractA total of 8 patients in whom renal tuberculosis was suspected on clinical or radiological grounds but in whom confirmation could not be achieved by urine culture underwent renal fine needle aspiration. Immediate Cytodiagnosis was accomplished in 7 of 8 patients by the finding of Langhans’ giant histiocytes, epithelioid histiocytes and necrotic debris. Later confirmation was obtained in all 8 cases by radiometric culture of aspiration material or saline rinses of the fine needles. This experience introduces fine needle aspiration cytology as a diagnostic modality in renal tuberculosis.
