    Abstract The search for new and natural ingredients has been stimulated by the food and non-food industries, and the fresh young bamboo culm of Dendrocalamus asper emerges as promising for industrial production due to its composition with >10% of starch. So, this study aimed to characterize starch, extracted in aqueous solution, from three different parts (bottom, middle and top) of the young bamboo culm of D. asper (SB, SM and ST, respectively). Morphological and physicochemical characteristics of the young bamboo culm starches were evaluated, besides thermal properties, and the obtained data were evaluated by ANOVA and Scott-Knot test (p   89), and lower index in the red region. SEM images showed compound granules, which under polarized light exhibit a Maltese cross. The starches presented polyhedral shape and small size with an average diameter of 5.4 μm. All the samples presented low moisture (7.0 g/100 g), protein (2.0 g/100 g), lipid (0.3 g/100 g) and ash (1.0 g/100 g) contents. ST and SB showed apparent amylose content similar to starches from cereals and isolated from bamboo seeds. This agress to molecular size distribution of starch chains, since the SB, SM and ST presented amylopectin levels higher than those of amylose, as well as normal starches. The chain length of amylopectin presented the main peak at DP 12–13 and the second on at DP 43, similar to cereals like wheat, rice and barley. Its chain has higher proportion of short chains, which corroborates with the A-type polymorph presented.     Abstract Although bamboo is an agricultural product that moves billions of dollars in international trade, only its shoot has fiber production and use in food application. This study aimed to produce and evaluate the physicochemical and technological characteristics of young bamboo culm flour of Dendrocalamus asper for food application. Young culms were collected and divided into three fractions: bottom (B), middle (M) and top (T). The fractions were dried, ground, sieved and separated into two different particle sizes: F1 (d > 0.425 mm) and F2 (d ≤ 0.425 mm), totaling six samples: BF1, BF2, MF1, MF2, TF1 and TF2. The flours presented significant differences in proximate composition, whereas ash, protein and lipid contents were below 2%, and these flours can be considered as sources of fiber (67–79 g/100 g) and starch (from 6 to 16 g/100 g). Water absorption index (WAI) and water solubility index (WSI) were significantly higher for the bottom samples (BF1 and BF2), compared to the other flours. Color parameters indicated white yellow color for all flours, being all the samples F1 (BF1, MF1 and TF1) clearer than flour F2. The results of this study open new perspectives for the food application of young bamboo culm flour.

It resembles Dendrocalamus brandisii , but is characterized by dark-green culms, longer internodes, culm sheaths covered with densely brown bristles, erect blade of the culm sheath, 5–15 pseudospikelets at each node of the flowering branches, smaller pseudospikelets, as well as longer anthers and styles. It is only known from Menghai County, in Yunnan, China.

    Phylogenetic relationships among core taxa of the paleotropical bamboo clade placed in subtribe Bambusinae, comprising Bambusa s.l. (including Bambusa s.str. and its subgenera Leleba and Lingnania) and its allies (including Dendrocalamopsis, Dendrocalamus,Gigantochloa, Melocalamus and Thyrsostachys), and with Neosinocalamus and Oxytenanthera, were examined by separate and combined cladistic analyses of the nuclear GBSSI gene and plastid psbA-trnH, rpl32-trnL and rps16 intron sequences using maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference analyses. The taxa were strongly supported as a monophyletic group, which represents subtribe Bambusinae. Melocalamus and Thyrsostachys were confirmed as good genera. In the combined analysis, Bambusa s.l. and Dendrocalamopsis formed one of two clades with reasonable support, and Dendrocalamus clustered with Gigantochloa, Neosinocalamus and Oxytenanthera in the other. The topology also identified several taxa that were misplaced in Bambusa or Dendrocalamus. Sinocalamus (currently a subgenus of Dendrocalamus) appeared to be heterogeneous and contained taxa allied to Bambusa or Dendrocalamus. Except for Oxytenanthera, the alliance of Bambusa and allies appeared well characterized by a broadly conical, solid and typically hairy ovary summit. The taxonomic significance of rachilla and floret characters, considered useful in distinguishing subsets of genera, remains uncertain.

  • Preservative Treatment of Two Bamboo Species by Long-Term Immersion and Modified Boucherie

    Abstract:

    This study aimed to evaluate the quality of preservative treatment of Bambusa vulgaris and Dendrocalamus giganteus bamboo species employing two treatment methods. The bamboos were collected in clumps in the municipalities of Alegre and Jerônimo Monteiro, southern of Espírito Santo State, Brazil. The stems were sectioned in 2.0 m-long culms and treated in solutions with 1 and 3% of the active ingredients (a.i.) of a product based on copper, chromium and boron (CCB). In the long-term immersion method, the culms were immersed in the solution for 5, 10 and 15 days. In the modified Boucherie method, the solution penetrated the bamboo species using a pressure of 0.7 MPa. Treatment quality was evaluated by means of penetration and retention of CCB in the culms. There was greater penetration of a.i. at the base of the culms, and retention was below recommendation according to the Brazilian standards for wood treatment.

    Abstrak : Sungai Keremit terletak di Joben Resort, Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani, Lombok, yang memiliki ketinggian 661m-848m di atas permukaan laut, di sungai Keremit terdapat berbagai jenis tanaman, salah satunya adalah bambu yang tumbuh di sempadan sungai, palung, tebing dan tepi sungai. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui spesies bambu, kunci identifikasi, deskripsi, hubungan kekerabatan antar spesies bambu, peta distribusi bambu di sempadan sungai Keremit, Resort Joben, Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani, Lombok. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode garis, mengumpulkan semua spesies bambu di sepanjang sempadan sungai Keremit yang diambil pada area 50 meter dari tepi kiri dan kanan palung sungai. Berdasarkan hasil identifikasi ditemukan 4 marga bambu, dengan 6 spesies dan 1 kultivar (cv), di sempadan sungai Keremit, Resort Joben, Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani, Lombok, yaitu Schizostachyum jaculans, Gigantochloa atter, Gigantochloa apus, Dendrocalamus sp., Dendrocalamus asper, Bambusa vulgaris, dan 1 kultivar bambu, yaitu Bambusa vulgaris cv. Vittata.Kata kunci : Bambu, Tepi Sungai, Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani, Lombok.Abstract : Keremit river is located in Joben Resort, Rinjani Mount National Park, Lombok, which has an altitude of 661m-848m above sea level, in the Keremit river there are various types of plants, one of which is bamboo which grows on the edge of the trough, cliffs and river banks. This study aims to determine the species of bamboo, identification keys, description, relationship between bamboo species, bamboos distribution map at the border of the Keremit river, Resort Joben, Rinjani Mount National Park, Lombok. Samples collections were conducted using the line sampling method, collecting all species of bamboo in the border of the Keremit river were taken from the area of 50 meters from the left and right edges of the riverbed. Based on the identification results was 4 genera of bamboos, with 6 species and 1 cultivated variety in the border of Keremit river, Joben Resort, Rinjani Mount National Park, Lombok, namely Schizostachyum jaculans, Gigantochloa atter, Gigantochloa apus, Dendrocalamus sp., Dendrocalamus asper, Bambusa vulgaris, and 1 cultivated variety of bamboo, namely Bambusa vulgaris cv Vittata.     Abstract:

    Indonesia has 176 species and 24 genera of bamboos, around 11.5% of the total bamboo species in the world. In Lombok, there were found 6 genera, 15 species and 8 varieties. Bamboo has an important role on the river banks, it can prevent erosion of the river cliffs. The purpose of this study was to identify the species of highland bamboos, at the border of the Trengwilis river, Rinjani Mount National Park, Lombok. This research was conducted by descriptive explorative method, on July - April 2019. The Collecing data was used line sampling methode, with exploring the river border, 50 meters from the left and right edges of riverbed. Data collection in the field was carried out by recording 72 bamboo characters. The results were found eight species of bamboo which were included in five genera, e.g. Bambusa vulgaris Schard., Schizotachyum sp., Dendrocalamus sp. Dendrocalamus asper (Schult) Backer, Gigantochloa sp., Gigantochloa atter (Hassk.) Kurz., that were found at an attitude 623m-660m asl.; Gigantochloa apus (Schult.) Kurz. that grew as long as the Trengwilis riverbed at around atitude 623m-729m asl.; and Dinochloa sp. was found at an atitude 716m asl. Genus Dinochloa was a new record in West Nusa Tenggara Region
