Biocidal effect of (E)-anethole on the cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon gracile Lemmermann

Herein, we study 11 essential oils and some of their major components for their activity on Aphanizomenon gracile. On the basis of our results we support that Origanum vulgare and O. Dictamnus, Ocimum basilicum, Eucalyptus meliodora, Melissa officinalis, and Pimpinella anisum exhibited the strongest activities, and the IC50/1d values of the extracts were calculated to be between 168.43 and 241.97 μg mL−1. When the major components of the biocidal essential oils were tested individually, (E)-anethole was found active, exhibiting an IC50/1d value of 71.35 μg mL−1. On the other hand, the half-life (t1/2) of (E)-anethole was calculated at 1 h. A preliminary attempt of (E)-anethole microencapsulation was conducted, in order to slowly release this biocidal agent, increasing the residual life under open air conditions and thus the biological activity. Results were promising since the microencapsulated product exhibited better activity than did the non-formulated (E)-anethole. This is a first report on the biocidal activity of EOs and (E)-anethole on A. gracile and a preliminary indication of the microencapsulated (E)-anethole potential use as a natural biocidal in fresh waters.

Situación actual de Dictamnus hispanicus Webb (Rutaceae) en la provincia de Alicante: distribución y aspectos etnobotánicos

However, there is still little information on other uses of the species in the same province. In order to increase this knowledge, semi-structured interviews (n=90) have been made, and information on its distribution range has been completed using Geographic Information Systems; the species has been rederred to 27 1×1 km UTM squares. 5 phytonyms in Valencian language (74.44% of the informants) and 6 in Castilian or Spanish (25.66%) have been collected. 9 applications uses have been identified: liqueurs (spirits), menstruation regulation, respiratory diseases relieve, intestinal inflammations, alleviation of hard digestion, aerophagia, bad breath, abortion, flavouring cabinets and prevention against the proliferation of moths.El tarraguillo (Dictamnus hispanicus) es un endemismo de la mitad oriental de la Península Ibérica que posee notable relieve por sus usos tradicionales en la provincia de Alicante (Comunidad Valenciana, España), donde forma parte de los ‘herberos’ o licores de hierbas silvestres. Sin embargo, existe aún poca información sobre el resto de usos de la planta en esa provincia. Para incrementar dicho conocimiento, se han realizado encuestas semiestructuradas (n=90) y se ha completado la información sobre su distribución mediante el empleo de Sistemas de Información Geográfica, localizándose referencias para 27 cuadrículas UTM de 1×1 km. Se han recogido 5 fitónimos en valenciano (74,44 % de los informantes) y 6 en castellano (25,66%). Se han identificado un total de 9 usos: elaboración de licores, regularizar la menstruación, aliviar patologías respiratorias, inflamaciones intestinales, digestiones pesadas, aerofagia, mal aliento, abortiva, aromatizar los armarios y evitar la proliferación de polillas

Weight-dependent doses of Rosmarinus officinalis, Ocimum basilicum, Mentha spicata, Mentha pulegium, Lavandula angustifolia, Mentha piperita, Origanum Dictamnus, and Origanum vulgare, isolated from the respective aromatic plants from NE Greece, were administered 60 minutes prior to intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of a lethal dose of PTZ to eight respective groups of Balb-c mice. Control group received only one i.p. PTZ injection. Motor and behavioral activity of the animals after EOs administration, development of tonic-clonic seizures, seizure latency and severity, and percentage of survival after PTZ administration were determined for each group. All groups of mice treated with the EOs showed reduced activity and stability after the administration of the oil, except for those treated with O. vulgare (100% mortality after the administration of the oil). After PTZ administration, mice from the different groups showed increased latency and reduced severity of seizures (ranging from simple twitches to complete seizures). Mice who had received M. piperita demonstrated no seizures and 100% survival. The different drastic component and its concentration could account for the diversity of anticonvulsant effects.

The effectiveness of plant essential oils on the growth of Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium sp. and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis

( Fusarium solani var. coeruleum ), and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis on artificial growth media. The chemical composition of the oils was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The growth of Botrytis cinerea , Fusarium sp. and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis was completely inhibited by oregano, thyme, Dictamnus and marjoram essential oils at relatively low concentrations (85–300 μg/ml). Thymol was the main component of oregano oil, while thyme, Dictamnus, and marjoram oils were rich in carvacrol. Lavender, rosemary, sage, and pennyroyal essential oils presented less inhibitory activity. The growth of the tested microorganisms was affected at concentrations up to 1000 μg/ml. Lavender oil was characterized by the high content of linalool and linalyl acetate, while eucalyptol was the main component of sage and rosemary oils. Pennyroyal oil was found rich of cis -menthone and pulegone.

Origanum majorana (marjoram) oil was constituted of hydrocarbons (42.1%), alcohols (24.3%), and phenols (14.2%). The essential oil from Lavandula angustifolia Mill. (lavender) was characterized by the presence of alcohols (58.8%) and esters (32.7%). Ethers predominated in Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) and Salvia fruticosa (sage) essential oils, constituting 88.9 and 78.0%, respectively. The radial growth, conidial germination, and production of Penicillium digitatum were inhibited completely by oregano, thyme, dictamus, and marjoram essential oils at relatively low concentrations (250−400 μg/mL). One is Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz., which could be found in many areas of China and has been recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The other is Dictamnus angustifolius G. Don ex Sweet, which is only present in Xinjiang province and has been used as an alternative for Dictamnus dasycarpus in the local for the treatment of rheumatism, bleeding, itching, jaundice, chronic hepatitis and skin diseases. The present paper reviewed the traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of the genus Dictamnus. Materials and methods Information on the Dictamnus species was collected from classic books about Chinese herbal medicine and globally accepted scientific databases including PubMed, Elsevier, ASC, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, CNKI and others. Results About 170 chemical compounds, which include quinoline alkaloids, limonoids, sesquiterpenes, coumarins, flavonoids and steroids, have been isolated from the genus Dictamnus. The characteristic and active constituents of Dictamnus species are considered to be quinoline alkaloids and limonoids, which exhibited a broad spectrum of biological activities such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammation, anti-microbe, anti-platelet-aggregation, vascular-relaxation, anti-insect, anti-HIV, anti-allergy and neuroprotection. Moreover, quinoline alkaloids and limonoids could be used as quality control markers to distinguish different species from the genus Dictamnus. However, there were also some reports on the toxic hepatitis and phototoxic effect of Dictamnus species, and the related research needs to be further studied. Conclusion In this review, we summarized the chemical constituents, pharmacology, quality control and toxicology of the species from genus Dictamnus. Phytochemical investigations indicated that quinoline alkaloids and limonoids were the major bioactive components with potential cytotoxic, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-platelet-aggregation and vascular relaxing activities. These two kinds of compounds have attracted great interests in the past few years and may have great potential to be new drug lead compounds.

limonoids from the root bark of Dictamnus angustifolius potent neuroprotective agents with biometal chelation and halting copper redox cycling properties
RSC Advances, 2015Co-Authors: Jian-bo Sun, Neng Jiang, Pei Wang, Jing-yu LiangAbstract:Six novel limonoids, dictangustones A–F (1–6), along with four known limonoids were isolated from the root bark of Dictamnus angustifolius. The structures of the new limonoids were established by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic experiments. In vitro studies show that all limonoids exhibited metal chelating property. Moreover, the Cu–ascorbate redox system assay revealed that the selected limonoid 2 could control Cu(I/II)-triggered hydroxyl radical (OH˙) production by halting copper redox cycling via metal complexation. Importantly, the selected limonoids 1, 2, 4 and 6 were nontoxicity to SH-SY5Y cells and showed significant neuroprotective activity against neuronal death induced by oxidative stress. Taken together, these limonoids such as limonoid 2 may be good candidates for developing new drugs in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

A new quinoline alkaloid from the roots of Dictamnus angustifolius.

Method The quinoline alkaloids were isolated by various column chromatographic methods and their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral analysis. Results A new quinoline alkaloid, 5-methoxylrobustine (1), along with five known quinoline alkaloids were obtained, and their structures were identified as dictamnine (2), robustine (3), isopteleine (4), γ-fagarine (5), and skimmianine (6). Cytotoxicity testing of these alkaloids showed that all of them had weak cytotoxic activities against human breast cancer cells (MCF7). Conclusion Compound 1 is a new quinoline alkaloid. Alkaloid 3 showed stronger anti-proliferation effect than the other alkaloids.

(Rutaceae). The present study was aimed at the development of an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method to quantify the concentration of dictamnine in rat plasma and tissues for the in vivo pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution and excretion study. Biological samples were processed with protein precipitation. Skimmianine was chosen as internal standard. The chromatographic separation was carried out on a Thermo Syncronis C18 column (2.1mm×50mm, 1.7μm) with an isocratic mobile phase consisting of methanol and 0.1% formic acid water (75:25, v/v). The detection was accomplished by using positive ion electrospray ionization in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The MS/MS ion transitions were monitored at m/z 200.0→129.0 for dictamnine and 260.3→227.1 for IS, respectively. An excellent linearity was observed over the concentration range from 0.5 to 250ng/mL. The lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 0.5ng/mL for dictamnine. The developed method was rapid, accurate, and highly sensitive and selective. It was successfully applied to the in vivo pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution and excretion study of dictamnine in rats after oral or intravenous administration of dictamnine.
