Diterpenes from the brown alga Dictyota mertensii

The populations were analyzed by 1H NMR and GC-MS techniques. Both chemical GC-MS and 1H NMR profiles of D. mertensii presented diterpenes as major constituents. In all populations, we detected the prenylated guaiane diterpenes, dictyoxide, pachydictyol A, isopachydictyol A, dictyol B and its acetate, and dictyol C. Although dictyol H has been described as a taxonomic marker, this diterpene was found in only two of the three studied populations. This result reinforces the need for studies of temporal and geographic variation for the establishment of the taxonomic limits of the species chemical patterns. It was also possible to observe mass spectra fragmentation and proton chemical shift in the NMR spectra characteristic from xeniane diterpenes, for the first time in this species, which led to the detection of dictyodial, suggesting that D. mertensii belongs to the chemotaxonomic group of species D. ciliolata, D. jamaicensis, and D. menstrualis, all of which are producers of diterpene from chemical groups I and III.

We analysed the crude extracts of three Brazilian populations of the brown alga Dictyota ciliolata by hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy and high-resolution gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HRGC/MS). All of the HRGC/MS profiles showed that D. ciliolata contained prenylated guaiane (Group I), xeniane, and crenulidane diterpenes (Group III) as major constituents. Eleven diterpenes were detected, dictyol B acetate, dictyol B, dictyol C, dictyoxide, isopachydictyol A, pachydictyol A, 4β-acetoxydictyodial A, and four crenulidane diterpenes. Dictyol B acetate was the major product in all of algal populations in Brazil. Anti-leishmanial activity of Brazilian green, brown, and red algae

Studies of marine algae as a source of pharmacologically active compounds have increased worldwide. This study evaluated the activity of algal crude extracts and a purified product against Leishmania amazonensis . Extracts from Caulerpa racemosa , Osmundaria obtusiloba , Stypopodium zonale , Dictyota ciliolata , and Dictyota menstrualis showed EC_50/24 h activity with concentrations that ranged from 0.61 to 154.0 μg mL^−1. The cytotoxicity of these extracts on macrophages showed CC_50/24 h, with a concentration range of 18.2–240.0 μg mL^−1. The selectivity index corresponds to values varying from 0.31 to 39.33 for these extracts. A mixture of diterpene isomers isolated from D. menstrualis showed interesting activity against L. amazonensis . In addition, the anti-leishmanial activity of the O. obtusiloba extract showed potential activity that was better than the effect obtained with pentamidine, a reference drug. The alcoholic extract of O. obtusiloba was selected for in vivo tests, and BALB/c mice were infected with L. amazonensis and treated with the O. obtusiloba extract orally for 4 weeks. The treatment showed the ability to control the dissemination of parasites to the draining lymph nodes as well the evolution of cutaneous lesions, indicating a potential therapeutic use of the alcoholic extract of O. obtusiloba . These results provide new perspectives on the development of drugs against leishmaniasis.

The brown alga Dictyota has an isomorphic biphasic life cycle. The quantification of the active principle by GC–FID indicated a greater production of the diterpene in the female gametophytic phase (42.11 ppm). However, these individuals had the highest variation between individuals (standard deviation of 68.20 ppm in the range from 0.39 to 227 ppm). Sporophytic individuals showed less variability. This variability in the production of the antiviral diterpene is important to the development of future antiviral drugs.

Lamouroux (Phaeophyceae, Dic- tyotales) along the Mexican coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean, using psbA and cox1 genes, it was found that two particular collections did not match with the sequences pub- lished for a total of 39 species of Dictyota. For each gene, both collections diverged in high-uncor- rected "p" distance values with respect to other related species. This high genetic divergence was corroborated by morphological analysis. Hence, we proposed Dictyota mayae J. Lozano-Orozco & Senties and Dictyota pedrochei J. Lozano-Orozco & Senties as new species.

Bogaert, Soria Delva, Olivier De ClerckAbstract:The genus Dictyota (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) comprises parenchymatous algae occurring predominantly in tropical to warm-temperate waters and has gathered attention due to its diverse secondary metabolites with antibiofouling and pharmaceutical potential, its oil content, and its potential as animal feed. This has resulted in an increase in economic potential during the last decade. In this review, we summarise the recent knowledge on the genus and concentrate on the applications and the economic potential of Dictyota . In addition, the review summarises the taxonomy, anatomy, cytology, genetic data, life history, chemical composition, nutritional value and ecological and economic importance of Dictyota species. Currently, around 100 species are recognised together with the morphologically similar and closely related genera Dilophus , Canistrocarpus and Rugulopteryx (tribus Dictyoteae). The thallus is characterised by one or more lens-shaped apical cells that divide into cortical and medullary cell layers. Species typically grow in rocky intertidal pools and subtidal areas. Dictyota is consumed locally in the Caribbean, Malayan-Indonesian and Hawaiian regions. Extracts of Dictyota which contain active compounds, such as diterpenes and phlorotannins, have been attributed antimicrobial, health and wellness promoting effects which render them promising candidates for the design of functional foods, phytomedicinal products, and cosmetics. The high fraction of lipids and fatty acids has propelled emerging applications in the biofuel industry and as a feedstock species.

Dictyota is currently distinguished from allied genera of the tribe Dictyoteae (Dilophus, Glossophora, Glossophorella, and Pachydictyon) by the structure of the cortical and medullary layers, as well as the relative abundance of surface proliferations. Even though the traditional classification of the Dictyoteae has repeatedly been criticized in the past, the absence of sound molecular data has so far discouraged any new taxonomic proposals apart from a merger of Dilophus with Dictyota, which has been accepted by only part of the phycological community. Phylogenetic analysis of rbcL gene, partial 26S rDNA sequence, and combined data sets, including four of five generitypes, demonstrates that the traditional classification does not accurately reflect the evolutionary history of the group. None of the genera are resolved as a monophyletic clade. Hence, a merger of Glossophora, Glossophorella, and Pachydictyon in Dictyota is proposed. Two new genera, Canistrocarpus (incorporating D. cervicornis, D. crispata, and D. magneana) and Rugulopteryx (accommodating D. radicans, Dil. suhrii, and Dil. marginata), are proposed. Both genera are supported by molecular indications and a combination of reproductive and vegetative characters. The position of Dil. fastigiatus as a clade sister to Dictyota s.1. and the absence of Dil. gunnianus, the generitype of Dilophus, from the analyses, prevented us from making a more definite statement on the status of the latter genus.
