    Abstract:

    BackgroundBoth the myocardial perfusion pattern and myocardial blood flow (MBF) are used to assess patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to compare the perfusion pattern (using the summed Difference Score [SDS]) to MBF in a consecutive group of patients undergoing PET/CT with 13 N-ammonia (13NH3).Methods47 consecutive patients, aged 65 ± 12 years (42 men) with known or suspected CAD, underwent vasodilator stress/rest PET/CT with 13NH3 for clinical indications. The SDS was determined by a commercially available software based on a 17-segment model. MBF was measured at rest and during hyperemia by dynamic acquisition and single-compartment model analysis. From the rest and stress MBF, the absolute Difference (stress-rest) in myocardial blood flow defined as Difference in myocardial blood flow (DMBF) was derived.ResultsThere were no significant Differences between patients with no ischemia (SDS ≤ 1) and those with ischemia (SDS > 1) in CFR (2.84 ± 0.73 vs 2.63 ± 0.89, P = NS) and DMBF (1.34 ± 0.45 vs 1.24 ± 0.53 mL·minute−1·g−1, P = NS). There were however significant regional Differences (141 different vascular territories in 47 patients) between these two groups (CFR: 2.84 ± 0.95 vs 2.16 ± 0.57, P

    Abstract:

    Latent Difference Score models (e.g., McArdle & Hamagami, 2001) are extended to include effects from prior changes to subsequent changes. This extension of latent Difference Scores allows for testing hypotheses where recent changes, as opposed to recent levels, are a primary predictor of subsequent changes. These models are applied to bivariate longitudinal data collected as part of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging on memory performance, measured by the California Verbal Learning Test, and lateral ventricle size, measured by structural MRIs. Results indicate that recent increases in the lateral ventricle size were a leading indicator of subsequent declines in memory performance from age 60 to 90.

    Abstract:

    Latent Difference Score (LDS) models combine benefits derived from autoregressive and latent growth curve models allowing for time-dependent influences and systematic change. The specification and descriptions of LDS models include an initial level of ability or trait plus an accumulation of changes. A limitation of this specification is that the intercept is always located at the beginning of the process or observation period. In this article, LDS models are reformulated to allow the intercept to be centered at any time point. Additionally, I describe how the constant change factor can be rescaled to alter its interpretation.

Empirical studies conducted in the West have shown beneficial effects of productive engagement on psychological well-being. However, the mechanisms by which engagement in productive activities leads to and results from improved mental health remain unclear.Method: Utilizing role enhancement and social resource theories, the present study investigated the relationship between productive role occupancy and depression among older Chinese adults in rural areas over 8 years. Using four waves of data from the Well-Being of Elderly in Anhui Province of China study, we employed bivariate latent different Score analysis to examine the temporal sequence of productive role occupancy and depression among 1696 older adults.Results: Findings indicated that trajectories of productive role occupancy and depression rose across the four waves.     Abstract:

    This study examined how life satisfaction and grandparent caregiving intensity changed over time among rural Chinese older adults, and whether there was a leading predictor between grandparent caregiving intensity and life satisfaction. Using 4 waves of data from the Well-being of Elderly in Anhui Province of China (N = 1704), we applied latent Difference Score analysis to explore this relationship. Results indicated that grandparent caregiving intensity decreased and life satisfaction increased over time. There was a lagged effect between grandparent caregiving intensity and life satisfaction, and life satisfaction demonstrated a leading prediction role between these 2 variables. This study confirmed the potentially rewarding aspect of grandparent caregiving, which may lead to greater life satisfaction. The results also revealed that psychological well-being among grandparents is very important for performing activities, such as caregiving.

  • Grandparent Caregiving and Self-Rated Health among Rural Chinese Older Adults: A Longitudinal Study Using Latent Difference Score Analysis

    Abstract:

    Background: Caregiving for grandchildren has effect on the physical health of older adults. Physical well-being may also affect the daily activities of grandparent caregivers. Therefore, there may be a reciprocal effect between grandparent caregiving and health. However, few studies have tested this dynamic relationship. This study examined how grandparent caregiving and self-rated health (SRH) changes over time among rural Chinese older adults and whether a reciprocal effect exists between them. Methods: Four waves of the longitudinal study of older adults in Anhui province of China were used for this study, featuring 1,696 older grandparents who completed at least the first wave in 2001 and were followed up or not in 2003, 2006, and 2009. Latent Difference Score analyses were applied using Mplus 5.1 and Amos 5. Results: Results show that both grandparent caregiving and SRH decreased significantly over time. Grandparent caregiving in a previous wave significantly predicted subsequent change in SRH, indicating that more grandparent caregiving resulted in a greater change in SRH. On the other hand, SRH had a significant effect on subsequent change in grandparent caregiving, showing that better SRH led to lesser changes in grandparent caregiving in later waves. SRH played a leading role in the prediction effect. Conclusions and implications: This study found a reciprocal effect between grandparent caregiving and SRH. This indicates that grandparent caregiving can be physically demanding and may lead to greater changes in SRH, whereas good SRH is a necessary precondition of caring for grandchildren. The study also found a leading predicting role of SRH, which suggests that SRH as a personal resource is extremely important because it partially determines whether and how intensely rural Chinese grandparents can care for their grandchildren.
