It is similar in color to G. nigra Okutani, 1958 from Japan but differs in the strongly infuscate wings, the simple inner spur of hind tibia and the unique lancet. The host plant is Pinus massoniana Lamb. (Pinaceae). A key to known species of Gilpinia from China is provided.

Japanese species of the sawfly genus Nesodiprion (Hymenoptera, Diprionidae).
Zootaxa, 2015Co-Authors: Hideho Hara, David R. SmithAbstract:Nesodiprion flavipes sp. nov. associated with Tsuga diversifolia (Maxim.) Mast. and N. kojimai sp. nov. associated with Abies veitchii Lindl. are described from Honshu, Japan. Additional taxonomic and biological information is given for other Japanese congeners, N. japonicus (Marlatt, 1898), N. albiventris Togashi, 1998, N. shinoharai Togashi, 1998, N. nigerrimus Togashi, 1998, N. kagaensis Togashi, 1998, N. niger Togashi, 2001 and N. tsugae Togashi, 2001. The males of N. shinoharai, N. kagaensis and N. tsugae are described for the first time. The host plants of N. shinoharai are Pinus spp. Nesodiprion kagaensis is newly recorded from Hokkaido, Japan, and its host plants are Pinus spp. and Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carriere. Larvae of N. japonicus and N. kagaensis are briefly described. A division of Nesodiprion into the following five species groups is proposed: N. tsugae group, N. niger group, N. flavipes group, N. japonicus group and N. shinoharai group. Additions to the key to Nesodiprion species by Hara & Smith (2012) are given.

Sawflies (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) in a Juniper—Oak—rassland Habitat in Southern Arizona

We sampled a juniper-oak-grassland habitat in southeastern Arizona for Symphyta over a seven-year period. Collections included 27 species of Symphyta: 1 Xyelidae, 5 Pergidae, 1 Diprionidae, 16 Argidae, and 4 Tenthredinidae. The peak season for sawflies is July through September, coinciding with the rainy season. Five new species are described, Acordulecera brevis Smith, A. tristis Smith, and A. comoa Smith (Pergidae), and Eustromboceros arizonicus Smith and E. alboclypea Smith (Tenthredinidae). Previously unknown males are described for Sphacophilus apiculus Smith, Zynzus luteiventris (Cameron) (Argidae), and Susana rufa Smith (Tenthredinidae). Zynzus himus Smith is a new record for the United States, and Periclista is a new generic record for Arizona.

The corresponding alcohol precursor occurs in about 1.5 ng per female. The active compound in esterified extracts from females was singled out by gas chromatography combined with electroantennographic detection. Its structure was elucidated using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in combination with synthesis. A mixture of the 16 possible stereoisomers of 3,7,11-trimethyl-2-tridecanol was prepared. The gas chromatogram of the synthetic material gave two peaks, one of which displayed the same retention time and mass spectrum as that of natural virgin female extract. The propionate of the synthetic material was found to be active both in electroantennography and in field tests.

Synthetic intermediates were prepared either from chiral starting materials, via asymmetric syntheses, or by baker's yeast reductions.
