    During field surveys of eriophyid mites associated with autochthonous plants species in semi-arid and arid environments in East Iran (Birjand, South Khorasan, Iran, summer 2016 and 2017), seven new eriophyid mite species (Acari: Eriophyidae) were discovered. They are Aceria astratoraesp. nov. on Astragalus pinetorum Boiss. (Leguminosae), Aceria astracanthaesp. nov. on Astracantha echidna (Bunge) Podlech (Leguminosae), Aceria furgaesp. nov. on Ephedra major Host (Ephedraceae), Aceria runicaesp. nov. on Rubia caramanica Bornm. (Rubiaceae), Aculus birsutumsp. nov. on Epilobium hirsutum L. (Onagraceae), Phyllocoptes birreaesp. nov. on Centaurea virgata Lam. (Compositae), and Neophytoptus semenovissp. nov. on Semenovia suffruticosa (Freyn & Bornm.) Manden (Apiaceae), which are illustrated and described herein. All seven new species appear to be vagrants on green parts of their host plants with no particular symptom.

    Eriophyoid mites (Acari Eriophyoidea) are phytophagous arthropods forming intimate relationships with their host plants. These mites are associated with annual and perennial plants including ferns, and are highly specialized with a dominant monophagy. They can be classified in different ecological classes, i.e., vagrant, gall-making and refuge-seeking species. Many of them are major pests and some of them are vectors of plant pathogens. This paper critically reviews the knowledge on eriophyoids of agricultural importance with emphasis on sources for host plant resistance to these mites. The role of species belonging to the family Eriophyidae as vectors of plant viruses is discussed. Eriophyoid-host plant interactions, the susceptibility within selected crops and main host plant tolerance/resistance mechanisms are discussed. Fundamental concepts, subjects, and problems emerged in this review are pointed out and studies are suggested to clarify some controversial points.

    Abstract:

    A new species of plant mite (Acari: Eriophyidae) was discovered on medusahead ( Taeniatherum caput-medusae ), an annual grass that is native to central Asia and the Mediterranean Basin. It is invasive in western North America. Aculodes altamurgiensis sp. nov., is described here and differentiated from other Aculodes spp., on the basis of morphology. Its DNA fingerprinting was reported and compared with Aculodes mckenziei collected from Elymus repens and Bromus inermis . Pairwise comparison of MT-CO1 sequences between A. altamurgiensis sp. nov., and A. mckenziei revealed 20.2–21.5% genetic divergence between these congeneric species. First collected in Parco Nazionale dell’Alta Murgia in Apulia, Italy in 2014, A. altamurgiensis sp. nov., has been subsequently collected from medusahead in Serbia, Bulgaria, Iran and Turkey. Based on these data and on preliminary observations on the effects of the mite on plant growth, A. altamurgiensis sp. nov., is currently being investigated as a candidate biological control agent of medusahead.

    Abstract Three new vagrant species of eriophyoid mites living on the lower leaf surface of Lippia alba (Mill.) N. E. Brown (Verbenaceae) in the Northeast and Center West Brazil, are described and illustrated. They are: Paraphytoptus serenus sp. nov. and Tegoprionus alobus sp. nov. (both from family Eriophyidae) and Rhynacus lippius sp. nov. (Diptilomiopidae). Detailed anatomy of internal genitalia of the representatives of the three eriophyoid genera (Rhynacus, Paraphytoptus and Tegoprionus) was studied and described for the first time. A new, previously neglected genital structure of eriophyoids, the thorn-like spermathecal process, has been discovered with the aid of confocal laser scanning microscopy. Preliminary analysis indicates that this structure is common for many eriophyid and diptilomiopid species, however it is absent in phytoptid mites.     A new eriophyid genus and species, tentatively placed in the Tegonotini, namely Eriomacrotergum flechtmanni n. gen. n. sp., is described from the Amazonian fruit tree cupuacu Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. Ex Spreng.) K. Schum. (Malvaceae), collected in northern Brazil. The new taxon presents a peculiar morphology in having a large opisthosomal plate and a very reduced prodorsal shield, with ocellar-like structures and scapular setae displaced laterally. Discussion on the most remarkable taxonomic traits is presented as well as similarities of the new genus with other Eriophyidae genera.

    Two new genera and three new species of eriophyoid mites are described from cultivated plants from northeastern Brazil, including native or introduced ornamental species widely used in urban landscapes. A new genus and a new species are described in the family Phytoptidae, Neoprothrix hibiscus gen. nov., sp. nov. from the flowering shrub Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. This taxon represents the second genus and the second species to be described in the subfamily Prothricinae. A new genus and two new species are described in the family Eriophyidae both from Brazilian ornamental trees, Auriculatus clitoria gen. nov., sp. nov. from Clitoria fairchildiana and Thamnacus paubrasil sp nov. from Caesalpinia echinata.     Abstract:

    The mite Oxycenus maxwelli (Keifer) (Eriophyidae) is reported for the first time in Brazil infesting olive trees, Olea europaea. Specimens were found on seedlings at Maria da Fe, state of Minas Gerais, in 2007. Although minor symptoms were not noticed, significant damage to plants were observed. There is no reliable evidence of when the mite could have been introduced. It is believed that the mite occurs since the first introductions of olive trees, around 1820, through vegetative propagating material, but the mite remained unnoticed due to the lack of studies with olive trees in Brazil.

  • Effects of Aculus schlechtendali (Acari: Eriophyidae) population densities on Golden Delicious apple production

    Abstract:

    Field trials were carried out in order to evaluate the seasonal abundance and the impact on yields of the Apple Rust Mite (ARM) Aculus schlechtendali (Acari: Eriophyidae) in an experimental fruit orchard located in northern Italy (Trentino region). The effect of ARM on yield and market quality parameters were assessed on Golden Delicious apple fruits. Fruit size, fruit weight, round colour hue, presence of russet as well as inside quality, i.e. soluble solids, acidity and Perlim index, were evaluated over two seasons considering three population levels of ARM that were determined applying different pesticide strategies. Effects of rust mites on return bloom and yield efficiency were also evaluated. ARM seasonal abundance showed a peak in mid-summer. Relationships between ARM and predatory mites were weak. Moderate to high ARM densities affected fruits size, fruit weight, and round colour hue of Golden Delicious fruits. In contrast, ARM populations did not affect russet on fruits, return bloom and yield efficiency. Additional studies were conducted in the laboratory, on detached Golden Delicious apple leaves, to evaluate the potential for population increase at temperatures close to those recorded in field conditions. These studies evidenced a high potential for population increase.

    Abstract Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.; Sapindaceae) is a plant native to Southeast Asia, where it is mostly cultivated. This crop has been severely damaged in Australia, Brazil, China, Hawaii, India and Pakistan by the litchi erineum mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer) (Eriophyidae), which attacks mainly leaves but also flowers and fruits. Phytoseius intermedius Evans & McFarlane is one of the phytoseiid mites most commonly found in association with this pest in Brazil. The objectives of this study were to: a) to compare the predation and oviposition rates of P. intermedius when fed A. litchii with the same rates when the predator was fed other food sources [the eriophyid Aculops lycopersici Tryon, the spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch and pollen of Typha domingensis (Pers.)]; b) to evaluate the life history parameters of P. intermedius fed A. litchii.     The dispersal of plant-feeding mites can occur involuntarily, through transportation of infested plant parts, or voluntarily, by walking to new plant parts or to suitable spots where biotic (phoresis) or abiotic (wind, agricultural tools, etc.) factors carry them over long distances. Elucidating the dispersal mechanisms of the coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer, is important for understanding the process of colonization of new fruits of a same or different plants, essential for the improvement of control strategies of this serious coconut pest. Thus, the objective of this work was to investigate the voluntary dispersal mechanisms of this mite. The hypothesis that the coconut mite disperses by walking, phoresis or wind were tested. The coconut mite was shown to be able to walk short distances between fruits of the same bunch or between bunches of the same plant. Phoresis on insects of the orders Hymenoptera (Apidae), Coleoptera (Curculionidae) and Lepidoptera (Phycitidae) was evaluated in the laboratory and in the field. Although in the laboratory mites were shown to be able to climb onto honeybees, field investigations failed to show these insects as important carriers of the pest, corroborating findings of previous works; however, both laboratory and field investigations suggested the curculionid Parisoschoenus obesulus Casey to be able to transport the coconut mite between plants. Similarly, laboratory and field investigations suggested wind to be important in the dispersal of the coconut mite between plants.

    This is an updated checklist of phytophagous and fungivorous mites from Peru (Prostigmata: Tetranychidae, Tarsonemidae, Tenuipalpidae, Tydeidae, Eriophyidae, Diptilomiopidae; Astigmata: Acaridae, Winterschmidtiidae). The data are mainly based on an extensive survey carried out in the Peruvian territory in 2006, as well as on the new records of mites from minor collections and previous records. In addition to the new data collection, the presence of predators associated with the phytophagous mites collected is noted.

    Abstract The coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Prostigmata: Eriophyidae), is a major pest in several coconut production areas worldwide. Information on region of origin and sources of recent introductions of this mite are important aspects to guide evaluation of biological control agents and adoption of quarantine measures. Studies on the geographic pattern of morphological variation among populations of the coconut mite from different countries and continents can provide some of the biogeographic information required. Geometric morphometric analyses allow us to quantify and visualize shape variation, eliminating the effect of size, position and orientation, within and among samples of organisms.
