    Abstract:

    Ethnology museums have a troubled lineage as they are inheritors of a violent colonial legacy while being steeped in a positivist epistemology that seeks to order and categorize an otherwise disordered world. Educational research, similarly, is often predicated on realist knowledge principles as people are made objects to demonstrate their interactions to predict likely outcomes of various interventions. This article considers how an Ethnology museum, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City, can be used as a learning site by student teachers as they experience reading a museum. Student teachers, having considered examples of postcolonial theory, use this scholarship to think through and critically read AMNH. The inquiry into how student teachers read AMNH as a pedagogical space is reframed, however, by multitext interjections offered by participants themselves.     Abstract:

    Since 2016, a diverse network of academic researchers, creative practitioners and cultural activists has emerged in Scotland, keen to explore the potential of a “creative Ethnology”. This is in part a response to the politico-cultural and wider intellectual climate in the aftermath of the referendum on Scottish independence in 2014, and to ongoing debates in the arts and academia. As activists in this network, and ethnologists at almost opposite ends of our respective academic journeys, but who share similar perspectives and concerns, we reflect in this article on the margins and intersections of (European) Ethnology in Scotland through mapping our personal trajectories in terms of geographical location, institutional contexts, research foci and methodological experimentation. Given limitations of space, we concentrate on aspects highlighting the specific contexts we have found ourselves living and working in, thus illustrating the positionality of (European) Ethnology in Scotland through our individual trajectories in their relationality, rather than attempting a comprehensive account of the field. Our focus here is on that emerging “creative Ethnology” and its potential contribution as non-hegemonic anthropologies are becoming increasingly recognized.

    Abstract:

    Ethnology has long been seen as concerned with, as one would nowadays say, ‘constructing the nation’, thus invariably lending support to the nationalist project. In the nineteenth century, this was a matter of consolidating the emerging nation states primarily, but not only in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. Whereas in the twentieth-century some Western European states have experienced regional nationalism (e.g. in Catalonia or Scotland) as a significant political force that draws on more or less spurious distinctions of Self and Other, in Central Europe – especially in Germany – there has been a greater reluctance to use any discourse of indigeneity, due to its past and present ideological abuse, making appropriate contextualisation of cultural heritage in terms of place and memory, necessary for any nationalist project, rather difficult. Key words: European Ethnology, ‘salvage Ethnology’, Cultural anthropology, Self, Other, Third.

    Abstract:

    The previous issue of AJEC had ‘Ethnological Approaches to Cultural Heritages’ as its theme. As that issue was being produced, the Société Internationale d’Ethnologie et de Folklore (SIEF) held its 9th Congress, entitled ‘Transcending European Heritages: Liberating the Ethnological Imagination’, at the University of Ulster during the week 16–20 June, 2008 (see Fenske 2008 for details). This offered an opportunity to explore our theme further, and therefore the plenary speakers at that congress, representing a broad spectrum of backgrounds and approaches, nationalities and intellectual biographies, were invited to submit their texts for the present issue.

    EnglishIn this article we defend the idea that etho-Ethnology and ethno-ethology should be combined into a new science at the interface between human and animal sciences. This new field would study the hybrid communities comprised of humans and animals sharing meaning, interests and affects, and would try to account for the complexity of interspecific sociabilities.     Abstract:

    The authors intend to show in this article that, unlike what is usually said, some great apes are able to tie knots. First, they give the result of a survey on the Internet whose result has been to identify twelve “knot-maker” apes: seven orangutans, three bonobos and two chimpanzees. All of them have been reared by humans and are highly accultured anthropoids living in zoos. Second, they offer an ethnography of a knot-making orangutan, Wattana, a resident of the Menagerie of the Jardin deśum National d’Histoire Naturelle) in Paris, who was born on 17 November 1995 at the Antwerp Zoo in Belgium. The authors show that she is able to make true knots using her hands, feet and mouth and carefully describe the process involved. They then correlate Wattana’s knots, fiber techniques and ecology of techniques with nest-making behavior and propose an ethology of the singular, at the crossroad of ethology and Ethnology, to describe Wattana’s skills.

    Any science has to undergo a complex and changing development process. As the composition of the social science of Ethnology, due to the change of social demand in different historical period, the research object, research scope and research methods are also changing. This changing process also makes the history of the subject is constantly enriched. This paper put the Soviet Russian Ethnology as research object, and it analyzed the hot issues of Russian Ethnology by combing the Russian Ethnology history, and it displayed the general picture of the development of Ethnology in Russia. Firstly, this paper reviewed the development history of Russian Ethnology; this paper introduced the Russian Ethnology "crisis" and subject status, and it analyzed the Shirokogoroff's academic thoughts and the national theory and social influence of L.N.Gumilyov. Finally, this paper analyzed the Russian Ethnology in the new millennium. Through the study, we find that subject is still faced with many problems, one of the most important is the problem of discipline team construction and personnel training, and financial difficulty seems to be a common problem in all disciplines. Russia has opened up more channels of Ethnology funds at home and abroad, and completed many major scientific research projects, and the shortage of funds is still largely hindered the development of science, especially the development of local Ethnology.
