  • Factors Affecting The Demand For And Supply Of South African Yellow Maize Exports
    Agrekon, 1993
Co-Authors: R Cg Cleasby, M Ag Darroch, Gerald F. Ortmann
    Abstract:

A simultaneous-equation model containing yellow maize Export demand and Supply functions was specified and estimated by Two-Stage Least Squares using annual data for the period 1960-1990. Export demand was influenced by the world price (real) of yellow maize and lagged Exports. Export Supply was explained by the lagged domestic producer price, lagged Exports and random shocks in Supply. The price elasticity of Export demand estimated directly from the model was high (-37.90), but lower than that estimated by Johnson's indirect method (-181.30). Export Supply in the short- and long-run was price inelastic and relatively more responsive to Supply shocks. These results support a priori expectations that local yellow maize producers are price takers on the world market and that Export Supply reacts sluggishly to changes in the lagged producer price of yellow maize. Climatic variation was the major determinant of Export Supply. Implications for future yellow maize Export Supply of potential world trade liberalisation and niche marketing are discussed.

  • The Demand For And Supply Of South African Deciduous Fruit Exports : A Dynamic Analysis
    Agrekon, 1991
    Co-Authors: R Cg Cleasby, M Ag Darroch, V. Y. Dushmanitch
    Abstract:

This paper is the first empirical study of the factors affecting the demand for and Supply of South African deciduous fruit Exports. A simultaneous equations model of deciduous fruit Export demand and Supply was specified and estimated by Two Stage Least Squares using annual data for the period 1960 - 1990. Export demand was influenced by the world price (real) of deciduous fruit and real income of importing countries. Export Supply was explained by the lagged relative price of deciduous fruit Exports (ratio of net Export realisation price to domestic price), lagged Exports and random shocks in deciduous fruit Supply (deviation of actual production from trend). Estimated price and income elasticities of Export demand were high (-28.00 and 1.41 respectively). Export Supply in the short run was price inelastic (0.07) and relatively less responsive to Supply shocks. These results support a priori expectations that local deciduous fruit Exporters are price takers and that Export Supply reacts sluggishly to changes in the relative price of Exports. Real income growth in importing countries will markedly influence Export performance.

  • pesticide governance in Export Supply chains the case of vegetable and fruit production in vietnam
Environment and Planning C-government and Policy, 2010
    Co-Authors: Peter Oosterveer
    Abstract:

We analyze the role of international agrofood Supply chains in greening vegetable and fruit products and production in Vietnam. Mainly through contract-based procurement, the Export- oriented vegetable and fruit Supply chain is better structured and organized than the domestic Supply chain. Exporters intervene to some degree in fruit and vegetable farming, to safeguard Supply and to improve product quality. Pesticide use is one of Exporters’ concerns, although pesticide application remains largely controlled by farmers. Despite some endogenous innovations to improve vegetable and fruit pesticide practices, farmers and Exporters are especially responding to the demands of importers. Relatively lax import regulations from the main Export markets (China and Russia) are the main reason for limited achievements in less-pesticide-dependent vegetable and fruit production in Vietnam. By the same token, these limited innovations constrain farmers and Exporters from Exporting to more challenging markets in the EU, the US, and Japan. Hence, in Vietnam Export markets have hardly induced reduction in the use of pesticides in agricultural vegetable and fruit production.

  • structural adjustment programmes and Export Supply response
    Journal of International Development, 1998
    Co-Authors: Farhad Noorbakhsh, Alberto Paloni
    Abstract:

This paper analyses three aspects of the Export Supply response to structural adjustment programmes supported by the World Bank. First, have programmes improved programme countries' Export performance relative to non-programme countries? Second, have programmes contributed to re-orientation of production and build up of Supply capacity? Third, have programmes resulted in greater Export diversification? These questions are addressed by employing both traditional and less common techniques in the context of the 'before-after', 'with-without' and an original extended version of the 'modified control group' approaches. The empirical findings in this paper suggest that, although structural adjustment programmes have the expected effects in the short to medium run, they have failed to generate an appropriate Supply response which could underpin lasting Export expansion and diversification. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • Moving Texas Exports: Examining the Role of Transportation in the Plastic Resin Export Supply Chain
    2016
    Co-Authors: Jolanda Prozzi, Megan Kenney
    Abstract:

The objective of this series of papers is to describe the Supply chains for six of Texas’ major Export commodities and identify the role of transportation in the Supply chain. The study examined the transportation concerns of Exporters, transportation policies and regulations affecting the costs of Exports, and infrastructure concerns. This is the third paper in the series and documents the role of transportation in the plastic resin Export Supply chain and key transportation issues and concerns that were shared with the study team.
