    Abstract:

    Floriculture industry is booming in the world. Most of the farmers adopt Floriculture as a primary source of  income with traditional cropping system. The study is about to summarize my student Ms. Shilpa Kalmegh’s research on Hi-Tech Floriculture in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra state in India. The research will be greatly help farmers in the region for improving the economic status as well as survive them significantly. The study conclude that the Hi-Tech cultivation of Floriculture gives almost 6 to 22 times more income than the traditional crops and open cultivation of Floriculture. The study will be really very helpful for the marginal farmers in the Vidarbha region the farmer’s suicide prone area. The research  study  concluded by  breakeven quantity and sensitivity analysis of cut flower  and work out the economics of Floriculture plants under Hi-tech vis-a-vis open condition cultivation.  So that, the cultivators analyze the net returns from these crops and motivate towards adoption of  Floriculture cultivation as a primary source of income in Vidarbha region.

    Floriculture is the sunshine industry in India which provides better opportunity and employment throughout the year with the annual growth rate of 8to10%. The study is about to increase living and economic standards of farm community specially of marginal farmers in Vidarbha region. By adopting Floriculture instead of ordinary crops i.e. cereal, pulses in open cultivation and Hi-tech cultivation the farmers get much more benefit   from the produce. The cultivation of commercial flowers in open and Hi-tech fits well in to the strategy to boost income for marginal farmers.

    In twelve EU countries, the lower VAT-tariff is applied to flowers and plants in order to promote the production and employment in Floriculture. This paper assesses whether the VAT-regulation for flowers and plants achieves the goals set - promoting consumer demand and production and employment in the ornamental supply chain - (effectiveness) and at what cost (efficiency). The empirical results show that the VAT-regulation for Floriculture is effective, but not very efficient

  • Factors Influencing the Growth of Floriculture. A case study of Kinondoni Municipality, Dar es Salaam city in Tanzania

    Abstract:

    A study to evaluate the factors influencing the growth of Floriculture and its contribution to the community livelihoods was conducted in Dar es Salaam city, using Kinondoni Municipality as a case study. Specifically, the study intended to (i) explore the influential factors for the growth of Floriculture in the case study (ii) examine the socio-economic contribution of Floriculture to the local community livelihoods (iii) identify the challenges facing the Floriculture and (iv) suggest remedies towards the challenges. Simple random and purposive sampling techniques were used to get a total of 60 respondents. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches to collect data. Data were collected through observations, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results of the study show that income generation, availability of open spaces (road reserves), shortage of other employment opportunities, high demand, environmental conservation are the main factors for growth of the Floriculture. Low markets, shortage of the water supply services, informality, the eruption of pests and diseases and a shortage of working tools were revealed as significant challenges facing the floricultural business. To improve this business, it suggested that the government must recognize Floriculture as a business. It should provide more support in terms of the improvements of the water supply services, provision subsidy, aids and loans of the low conditionality to the smallholder farmers.

    Abstract This article examines the economics of Africa's emerging air cargo supply chains, taking Floriculture as a case study. Floriculture is an important employer, and earner of foreign exchange for several regions of central/southern and eastern Africa including more recently Ethiopia. Air transportation often plays a critical role when the supply-chain involves high-value, non-durable, relatively light-weight, and compact consignments such as flowers, and geographically when regions are difficult to access by other trunk modes. The success of air cargo chains, however, depend as much on the quality of surface modes serving various “last mile” access and egress functions, as well as efficient nodal interchange points and the availability of suitable airport and airline capacity. The last, because of the important role of belly-hold space, includes consideration of passenger as well as cargo specific services. To meet the needs of Africa's Floriculture sector, a variety of supply-chain models have emerged that embrace air and surface links, as well as storage at various points in the chain. The paper considers the nature of these chains, the reason d'etre for their structures, and their limitations.
