    Background Interest in the physiological roles of amino acids and their impact on health outcomes is substantial and growing. This interest has prompted assessment of the habitual intake of amino acids for use in epidemiologic studies and in clarifying the association between habitual intake and plasma levels of amino acids. Here, we investigated the validity of ranking individuals according to dietary amino acid intake as estimated using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) in comparison with intakes from dietary records (DRs) and plasma levels.

    We examined the validity and reproducibility of a 44-item Food Frequency Questionnaire used in a baseline survey of the Japan Public Health Center-Based Prospective Study Cohort I conducted in February 1990. Subjects were94 men and 107 women selected on a voluntary basis among respondents to the baseline survey. Four or five years after the baseline survey, they provided four 7-day diet records during a 1-year period, and then responded to the same Questionnaire a second time. The median (range) for energy-adjusted correlation coefficients between 30 nutrients measured by the Questionnaire and the diet records was 0.36 (0.06-0.81) for men and 0.37 (0.11-0.52) for women. The median correlation (range) for 17 Food groups was 0.30 (0.08-0.75) for men and 0.28 (0.08-0.46) for women. The median correlation (range) for energy-adjusted correlation coefficients between the two Questionnaires was 0.24 (0.04-0.69) for men and 0.50 (0.27-0.60) for women for the nutrients, and 0.34 (0.15-0.63) for men and 0.48 (0.18-0.55) for women for the Food groups, respectively. The results indicate that this brief Food Frequency Questionnaire provides reasonably valid and reproducible measures of consumption for many nutrients and Food groups, and is useful for examining the association between diet and health in the Japanese population.

    Abstract:

    We present here the survey methods and basic results of dietary records which were used as reference values in the present validation study of a self-administered Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) for the 5-year follow-up survey of the JPHC study. A semi-weighed dietary record was kept for four seven consecutive days in each of the four seasons in 3 areas, i.e., Iwate, Akita, and Nagano, and for seven consecutive days in both winter and summer in Okinawa. The mean intakes were significantly different between areas for some nutrients and Food groups. A significant seasonal difference in the mean intakes was also observed in some nutrients such as carotene and vitamin C, and in some Food groups such as potatoes, vegetables, and fruits in both sexes, and alcoholic beverages in men and milks in women (p<0.001).

    Abstract:

    A self-administered Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) has been used commonly in epidemiologic studies of diet and chronic diseases. The analysis of dietary data in the target population is useful for designing a new Questionnaire. The authors studied the major Food sources of nutrient intakes in the Japanese population in order to develop a FFQ for a population-based prospective study. Subjects were 180 men aged 40-49 years and their 155 spouses who were sampled from four Public Health Center districts. Weighed Food records over three consecutive weekdays were collected during the winters of 1989-1991. All Foods reported were grouped into 154 items, and the percent contribution of each Food to the total population intake of 15 nutrients was computed. Based on these data, a FFQ with 138 items was developed. The Food list covered well the population intake of most nutrients (median = 83%, range = 55-91%), except for lipid (70%) and sodium (55%). The Questionnaire was applied to the prospective study conducted in the same areas where the dietary data were collected, and an investigation to assess its reproducibility and validity is currently underway.

    Objective Diet is an important determinant of health outcomes, but physicians have few ways to identify persons with suboptimal diets. The purposes of this study were to examine the reproducibility of a short dietary assessment Questionnaire (PrimeScreen) and to compare its results with those of a longer Food Frequency Questionnaire and with plasma levels of selected nutrients. Design Each subject completed two PrimeScreen Questionnaires at an interval of 2 weeks and one full length, 131-item, semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SFFQ), and had a sample of blood drawn. We compared the PrimeScreen with two reference standards, the SFFQ and plasma levels of selected nutrients. Setting A large managed care organization in New England. Subjects A total of 160 men and women, aged 19-65 years, participated. Results For Foods and Food groups, the mean correlation coefficient (r) was 0.70 for reproducibility and 0.61 for comparability with the SFFQ. For nutrients, the mean r was 0.74 for reproducibility and 0.60 for comparability with the SFFQ. No substantial differences were evident by sex, race, body mass index, occupation or education. Correlation coefficients for the comparison of vitamin E, beta-carotene and lutein/zeaxanthin intakes from the PrimeScreen with plasma levels were 0.33, 0.43 and 0.43, respectively. These values were similar to those comparing the SFFQ with plasma levels. The median time to complete PrimeScreen was 5 min; 87% of participants required fewer than 10 min. Conclusions A quick way to assess quality of diet among adults, PrimeScreen has adequate reproducibility and its results compare well with a longer Food Frequency Questionnaire and biomarkers.

    Most validation studies of Food Frequency Questionnaires have been done in populations capable of reporting their diet with unusual accuracy. In this study of ranchers and subjects selected at random, we compared nutrient intakes as assessed with multiple diet records with those assessed with a self-administered Food Frequency Questionnaire (the Harvard-Willett instrument with 116 Food items). One hundred thirty-eight subjects from South Dakota and Wyoming, 64 males and 74 females, completed at least one Food Frequency Questionnaire and multiple 1-day diet records (mean = 5 days) during a 6-month to 1-year period. Of invited subjects, 88% participated; 59% of participants had a high school education or less. For 22 dietary nutrients (excluding supplements) and alcohol, the median crude correlation between intakes based on diet records and the Food Frequency Questionnaire completed before the diet records was 0.42; after adjustment for energy, age, and sex, and after correction for attenuation in the correlation coefficients due to error from a limited number of diet records, the median correlation was 0.52. Correlations for men and women were similar. The validity of the Food Frequency Questionnaire in this population was similar to that reported previously and supports the use of self-administered Food Frequency Questionnaires in studies of general populations.

    Abstract Few Food Frequency Questionnaires have been evaluated for their ability to assess intakes of individual Foods that may be related to disease independently of their nutrient content. The reproducibility and validity of Food intake measurements by a 131-item semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire were evaluated in a sample of 127 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, a large longitudinal study of diet and disease. Each subject completed two Questionnaires 1 year apart and two 1-week diet records 6 months apart during the intervening year. Pearson correlations assessing reproducibility between Food intakes from the two Questionnaires ranged from .31 for pie to .92 for coffee (mean = .59). Validity was measured by comparing Food intakes from the second Questionnaire with those from the diet records. Pearson correlations corrected for within-person weekly variation in diet record data ranged from .17 for other nuts to .95 for bananas (mean = .63). Large within-person variation precluded the calculation of accurate validity correlations for 29 Foods. As we previously observed in women, the Foods most often overreported were fruits and vegetables, and meats and dairy products were most often underreported. With few exceptions, reasonable levels of reproducibility and validity were observed for intake of individual Foods in this extensive Food Frequency Questionnaire.

    Abstract The authors assessed the reproducibility and validity of an expanded 131-item semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire used in a prospective study among 51,529 men. The form was administered by mail twice to a sample of 127 participants at a one-year interval. During this interval, men completed two one-week diet records spaced approximately 6 months apart. Mean values for intake of most nutrients assessed by the two methods were similar. Intraclass correlation coefficients for nutrient intakes assessed by Questionnaires one year apart ranged from 0.47 for vitamin E without supplements to 0.80 for vitamin C with supplements. Correlation coefficients between the energy-adjusted nutrient intakes measured by diet records and the second Questionnaire (which asked about diet during the year encompassing the diet records) ranged from 0.28 for iron without supplements to 0.86 for vitamin C with supplements (mean r = 0.59). These correlations were higher after adjusting for week-to-week variation in diet record intakes (mean r = 0.65). These data indicate that the expanded semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire is reproducible and provides a useful measure of intake for many nutrients over a one-year period.

    This report describes the development and validation/calibration of a structured Food Frequency Questionnaire for use in a large-scale cohort study of diet and health in Chinese men and women aged 45-74 years in Singapore, the development of a Food composition database for analysis of the dietary data, and the results of the dietary validation/calibration study. The present calibration study comparing estimated intakes from 24-hour recalls with those from the Food Frequency Questionnaires revealed correlations of 0.24-0.79 for energy and nutrients among the Singapore Chinese, which are comparable to the correlation coefficients reported in calibration studies of other populations.     Objective To evaluate the validity (study 1) and the reproducibility (study 2) of an interviewer-administered Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Method The FFQ was designed at Laval University and contains 91 items and 33 subquestions. Study 1 : The FFQ was compared against a 3-day Food record (2 week-days and 1 weekend-day), at week 0, 6 and 12 of a nutritional intervention. Study 2 : In order to evaluate the reproducibility of the FFQ, 2 registered dietitians administered the FFQ 4-weeks apart among subjects who were not part of the nutritional intervention. Results Study 1 : Mean values for intake of most nutrients assessed by the FFQ and by the 3-day Food record were not statistically different. Energy-adjusted correlation coefficients for major macronutrients ranged from 0.36 for proteins to 0.60 for carbohydrates (p ≤ 0.01). Agreement analysis revealed that on average, 35% of the subjects were classified in the same quartile when nutrients were assessed by either the 3-day Food record or the FFQ. Study 2 : Significant associations were observed between dietary measurements derived from the two FFQs administered 4 weeks apart. Correlation coefficients for the reproducibility of macronutrients ranged from 0.66 for carbohydrates to 0.83 for lipids after energy adjustment. On average, 46% of the subjects were classified in the same quartile when nutrient intakes were assessed by either FFQ. Conclusion These data indicated that the FFQ developed has a good validity and is reproducible.
