    Abstract:

    Data from available literature point to an early beginning of Forensic Dentistry in Croatia relating to a post-mortem examination of a female patient after a dental procedure in the 1930s. Later on, there were several mass casualties due to collisions and airplane crashes and a railway accident at the Zagreb Main Railway Station wherein the identity of the victims was established based on dental features. Foreign experts in Forensics helped identify those victims, particularly Forensic dentists because this specialty was almost unknown in our region at the time. During the twenty-year period of the development of Forensic Dentistry at the University of Zagreb, the School of Dental Medicine, the city of Zagreb and Croatia have become internationally recognised on the Forensic map of the world.

    Abstract:

    The Forensic Dentistry in Croatia, according to the written data, started in 1934 when two legal experts were hired to solve a case of a patient that died after dental treatment. Between 1971 and 1991 there were a few mass disasters in Croatia in which the identification of the victims did not include local dentists. An exception was a railroad accident in Zagreb, 1974 when the first dentist was included in the identification process, but without any prior education. The war in Croatia (1991-1995) brought the need for victim identification from mass graves. DVI teams and Forensic laboratories were founded in Zagreb, Split and Osijek. Zagreb identification team included an educated Forensic dentist from the School of Dental Medicine University of Zagreb. Numerous dental identification cases, naturally, brought the will and the need for further investigation of new techniques, skills and scientific methods. As a result of these, a single-semester course was introduced at the University of Zagreb, with 15 hours of lectures and 15 hours of practical training during the 5th year of Dental Medicine. The Chair for Forensic Dentistry was founded in 1997 at the Department of Dental Anthropology, the same year the undergraduate education started, and in 2000 a university textbook Forensic Dentistry was published. The School of Dental Medicine University of Sarajevo introduces the course, and in the last 12 years our lecturers are frequent guests at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Apart from the professional help for the colleagues at the Department of Forensic Medicine, the staff develops this area scientifically by presenting their work on international meetings and by publishing their articles in Forensic journals, but also through the Croatian Forensic Dental Association. The development of Croatian Forensic Dentistry has greatly been helped by the cooperation with other Forensics from all over the world that has supported our work and has strived to achieve the recognizability of Croatian Forensic Dentistry in the world. Zagreb School of Dental Medicine is the only school in the Western Balkans that has the Chair for Forensic Dentistry and that actively educates dentists in this field in the undergraduate and postgraduate education, including the continuous education.

    The presentation described development of Forensic Dentistry in Croatia from the thirties of 20th century to the present. The presentation was dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the Chair of Forensic Dentistry at the Department of Dental Anthropology and also the 50th anniversary of the Zagreb University School of Dental Medicine.

    Abstract:

    Historical examples of Hammurabi’s Code of Laws from 18th century BC and of identification by teeth of Lollia Paulina in ancient Rome show us that the need for Forensic Dentistry is as old as civilization. The Forensic dental expertise in Croatia has begun in the year 1932, when the two experts witnessed at the court in case where a dentist from Zagreb was accused to have caused the death of his patient by treating pulpitis with an arsenic medicament. Seventies of the 20th century were marked out with several mass disasters. In the train accident in Zagreb in 1974 there were 152 people killed. Police and Forensic pathologists performed identification of the victims. A dentist, who was a Forensic expert in the field of Dentistry but with no former experience in identification procedure, volunteered and took part in the identification. Dental findings, along with other characteristics, proved to be decisive in 5% of 111 identified cases. In the midair collision of a British and a Slovenian airplane near Vrbovec in 1976 there were 176 fatalities, mainly foreign passengers. The identification was conducted by British and German identification teams with the assistance of local police and Forensic pathologists. All 63 victims from the British plane were identified and dental features, along with other characteristics, were decisive in 33% of the cases. From the Slovenian plane 103 of 113 victims were identified, 14% exclusively by teeth and 16% by teeth in combination with other characteristics. The next great challenge emerged during and after the 1991-1995 Croatian War of Independence - the need for identification of human remains from mass graves. Identification teams and DNA Forensic laboratories have been established in Zagreb, Split and Osijek. For the first time in Croatia, a Forensically trained dentist was included in the Zagreb identification team. Out of 1, 000 human remains exhumed from mass graves until July 1998, 824 were positively identified. Dental identification was achieved in 25% of the cases and in further 64% dental findings were supportive evidence. In 1996, the Chair of Forensic Dentistry was established as a part of the Department of Dental Anthropology, and Forensic Dentistry was included in the curriculum of the School of Dental Medicine in Zagreb. In 1997, Croatian Society of Forensic Odontology was constituted and became a member of the International Organization of Forensic Odonto-Stomatology (IOFOS).

    Abstract:

    Dental age estimation is common in clinical orthodontics, pedodontics, paleodontology and Forensic Dentistry. The aim of this study was to assess chronological course of pre-eruptive and eruptive development phase of third molars and to establish parameters for a sample of Croatian population in clinical and Forensic Dentistry. Materials and Methods: Sample of this study consisted of 1249 standard OPGs ; there were 530 (42.4%) male and 719 (57.6%) female subjects whose OPGs were used, aged 10 to 25 years. Eruptive phases were classified in 4 stages, from A to D according to Olze et al. Results: results on third molar eruption are in accordance with earlier publications on Caucasoid. Conclusion: results of this study can be used in clinical and Forensic research on samples of Croatian population.

  • Human identification of victims of mass disasters: the importance and role of Forensic Dentistry

    Abstract:

    Human identification is one of the main activities developed by Forensic Dentistry. Mass disasters are accidents either natural or directly caused by human action or influence, which usually result in a high death toll. Bodies are often charred, fragmented, destroyed, or in advanced decomposition, which complicates the process of identifying the victims. Dental methods are commonly used in these cases due to the high resistance of the teeth. Hence, they are frequently the only source that may determine the identity of an individual. Objective: to analyze through the review of different cases in literature, the importance of Forensic Dentistry in the process of human identification in mass disasters, as well as the role of the Forensic dentist. Materials and methods: a literature survey was performed from scientific papers describing real cases in which the dental method for human identification was performed and its applicability was analyzed, to verify its advantages, limitations, and efficiency. Results: it was found that Dentistry has a significant contribution to the identification of victims in events of multiple fatalities. The dental method was often the only possible method of human identification in cases with either too many fatal victims or situations where the bodies were too compromised for analysis. Final considerations: Forensic Dentistry plays an important role in the process of human identification of victims of mass disasters because teeth have features that allow the identification process of an individual, and sometimes it is the only material capable of analysis.

    Abstract:

    The field of Forensic Dentistry embodies the human identification in a lot of conditions. A case is described when a tooth-like object was found in a pork sausage. A lawsuit was filed against the food company and the possible dental element was analysed. The tests used to analyze the case were: scanning electronic microscopic exam, radiographic exam and compared anatomy. The results confirmed that the object found in the sausage pack was a dental element from an adult pig; which had the potential for problems like asphyxia or contamination. The case illustrates one facet of Forensic Dentistry in Brazil.

    Abstract:

    Human identification is currently one of the most outstanding areas of Forensic Sciences. Forensic anthropology is a branch of the Forensic Sciences concerned with the application of general anthropological knowledge and methods to the process of law. Postmortem human identification is one of the major areas of study and research in Legal Medicine and Forensic Dentistry and both sciences work with the same type material and the human body in several conditions. Every human being has an identity in life, which should be recognized after death both for family consolation and for juridical purposes. Therefore, the aim of this literature review was to discuss and elaborate on the relationship between Forensic Anthropology and Molecular Biology in the expert practice of Forensic Dentistry. The use of DNA profile tests in Forensic Dentistry offers a new perspective in human identification. Molecular biology techniques should definitely be added to the constellation of investigative resources of the Forensic sciences, providing a variety of tools to Forensic Anthropology practice in human identity research, especially when the usual identification methods fail due to the deleterious effects of heat, trauma or autolytic processes on the body or body remains.

    Abstract:

    The established importance of Forensic Dentistry for human identification, mainly when there is little remaining material to perform such identification (e.g., in fires, explosions, decomposing bodies or skeletonized bodies), has led dentists working with Forensic investigation to become more familiar with the new molecular biology techniques. The currently available DNA tests have high reliability and are accepted as legal proofs in courts. This article presents a literature review referring to the main studies on Forensic Dentistry that involve the use of DNA for human identification, and makes an overview of the evolution of this technology in the last years, highlighting the importance of molecular biology in Forensic sciences.

  • Quality evaluation – guaranteed success in dental education: Forensic Dentistry

    Aims. The addition of a new mandatory course into the dental undergraduate course load represents a special challenge since students often view new courses as an excess burden, and they are not usually motivated to follow them. Forensic Dentistry is one of the most recently added mandatory courses in the dental undergraduate program offered at the University of Zagreb School of Dental Medicine. The purpose of this research was to establish the students’ satisfaction with this course, and to find out which of its segments they find the most interesting. Materials and methods. Random anonymous polling was conducted over a 7- year period (1989-2005), covering 246 final year dental students. The questionnaire contained 5 questions with “ yes” and “ no” answers and provided space for hand-written suggestions. Results. 86% of the polled students deemed the course essential to the education preparing them to be doctors of dental medicine. 96% of the students stated that they were satisfied with the quality of the lectures and the practical segments of the course. 16% of them maintained that the class time spent on the course should be longer. The most interesting part of the class pertained to identifying corpses (72%), bite mark identification (14%), and legal aspects (14%). 33% gave their own suggestions as to course improvement, most of whom expressed the wish for more hours of class time, and greater access to course material on the dental school’ s official webpages. The students commended the idea of monitoring student satisfaction with the quality of the course. Conclusion. Participating students accepted the quality evaluation questionnaire as a positive experience and as validation of their opinions. The students’ suggestions present us with simple and reliable guidelines for course improvement for certain classes. Student polling should be introduced for all courses, since the quality evaluation process leads us to success in dental education.

    From the Roman Empire till 19th Century, the dental surgeon was a legal consultant. His only role was to give some informations. From 1897 till 1974, the dental surgeon sometimes participated to some assessments. But, he was not often summoned by the magistrates. From 1974 till 1989, the stomatologists were summoned more than dental surgeons by the magistrates. From 1989 till nowadays, the dental surgeons worked inside Forensic teams. Now, after each disaster or each crime, the dental surgeon is always there. What about the first case of Forensic Dentistry in France? What about the practitioners? What about the real beginning of Forensic Dentistry in France and what about now the role of each dentistfacing a disaster or a crime ?
