anastomosing hemangioma of the Genitourinary System eight cases in the kidney and ovary with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis

One manifested with polycythemia, others were incidental; none recurred. The mean patient age was 58 years. Three hemangiomas developed in end-stage renal disease. Tumors were well-demarcated, mahogany brown, spongy lesions measuring 0.1 to 5 cm. Tortuous large vessels fed and drained tightly packed anastomosing sinusoidal capillary channels. Four hemangiomas exhibited lobular architecture, central edema/hyalinization, and intravascular growth. Five cases had thrombosis, hemorrhage, and hemosiderin. One ovarian tumor induced stromal luteinization. Three tumors had foci of extramedullary hematopoiesis (one associated with polycythemia). Six cases demonstrated eosinophilic intracytoplasmic globules. Three cases included hobnail endothelial cells. Atypia was minimal and mitoses were absent in all cases. We find this vascular neoplasm unique for the Genitourinary System. Despite selected features mimicking angiosarcoma, our data support its benign nature. The current study expands the gross and radiographic appearance, clinical aspects, and ultrastructure, with the first report of the lesion occurring in the ovary.

This is especially true in cases of mimics of cancer, a cancer of unknown primary, or poorly differentiated tumors, in which it is hard to assign histogenesis needed to plan the correct therapy for the patient. Immunohistochemistry offers a better capacity than hematoxylin-eosin staining alone to differentiate human tissue types. Also, in the past decades, several techniques had been developed to differentiate between benign and malignant processes with morphologic overlap. By using immunohistochemistry in selected cases, the rate of false-negative and false-positive diagnoses can be reduced, and some patients are afforded the opportunity to get more specific or effective therapy as a result. Methods We retrospectively studied the histopathological characteristics and immunohistochemical markers of 35 cases of male Genitourinary System lymphoma, and reviewed the relevant literature. Results The 35 patients of male Genitourinary System lymphoma were aged from 4 to 83 (mean 56.5) years, 28 (80%) of them > or = 50 years. Twenty-eight cases (80%) involved the testis, 3 (8.6%) the prostate, 1 (2.9%) the spermatic cord, 1 the seminal vesicles, 1 the penis and 1 the epididymis. Histologically, 22 cases (62.9%) were diffused large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), 6 (17.1%) mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, 4 (11.4%) Burkitt lymphoma, 2 (5.7%) peripheral T cell lymphoma, and 1 (2.9%) plasmacytoma. Conclusion Male Genitourinary System lymphomas are rare tumors clinically, which occur more often in the elderly. The majority of them are B cell lymphomas, of which the most common is DLBCL, followed by MALT lymphoma and Burkitt lymphoma. T cell lymphoma and plasmacytoma are rare. The diagnosis of male Genitourinary System lymphoma relies on the histopathology, and immunohistochemical markers are of high value for its definite diagnosis, classification and differential diagnosis.

Hainan Medical Journal, 2011Co-Authors: Qin LinglinAbstract:Objective To investigate the clinical value of ultrasonography for fetal Genitourinary System malformation.Methods The clinical data of 28 cases of fetal Genitourinary System malformation diagnosed by ultrasonography from October 2006 to October 2001 were retrospectively analyzed.Results Of the 28 cases,18 were with hydronephrosis,5 with multicystic dysplastic kidney,2 with agenesis of kidney,2 with duplicate kidney,and 1 with ectopic kidney.Conclusion Ultrasonography can be used to diagnoze fetal Genitourinary System malformation non-invasively and accurately,which provides significant information for clinical treatment.
