Particularly the ability to support perception is important in assessing 3D Geovisualizations’ effectiveness for communication. We applied both the concept of sense of presence, i.e. effectiveness of the medium, and sense of place, i.e. meanings and affordances, in a user study conducted through a web-based 3D Geovisualization. The study addressed a shopping mall in Helsinki, Finland. We collected a sample of adolescent respondents (n = 122), both familiar and unfamiliar with the geovisualized place in question. Adolescents responded to a survey addressing their perceptions of the mall after the virtual visit. The results indicate that prior familiarity with the place affects the results with the sense of presence, sense of place and preferred urban planning outcome. Familiar respondents were more likely to prefer preservation of the mall. The results show how sense of presence and sense of place work in interplay in the perception of a photorealistic 3D Geovisualization. Perception is not only dependent on the realism the 3D Geovisualization is able to transmit but also on the individual knowledge and experiences of the audience. According to the results, 3D Geovisualizations are best used as supportive tools in communication for urban planning and secondary to a real visit.

advancing analytical methods for urban metabolism studies
Resources Conservation and Recycling, 2017Co-Authors: Mei Po KwanAbstract:Abstract This article reviews conventional methods applied in current urban metabolism studies. Based on the limitations of these conventional methods, it highlights two urgent methodological needs for urban metabolism research: the need for using different spatial and temporal scales and the need for addressing issues of sustainable development. In order to meet these urgent needs, we propose a research framework based on 3D Geovisualization. The article argues that GIS and visualization can play an important role in enhancing the transparency and comprehensibility of the results of urban metabolism studies. Furthermore, it is also an effective platform for investigating urban metabolism at various spatial and temporal scales. Specifically, introducing the various speeds of flows and incorporating the differences in the rhythm of these flows will be helpful. GIS and visualization can help to translate analysis results into urban policy suggestions.

Geovisualization of human hybrid activity travel patterns
Transactions in Gis, 2007Co-Authors: Fang Ren, Mei Po KwanAbstract:While GIS-based Geovisualization techniques have been fruitfully employed in a wide range of fields, they have not been applied to explore human hybrid activity-travel patterns (i.e. the patterns of people's activities and/or travel in both the physical and virtual worlds). This study develops two Geovisualization approaches using 3D and 2D GIS techniques to address the difficulties faced by past studies. First, the notions of information cube and hybrid 3D space-time paths are developed to accommodate cyberspatial activities in exploratory data analysis. Second, a new representation of 2D space-time paths that incorporates parallel coordinate plots is developed for exploring the multiple attributes of people's Internet and physical activities. These two methods were implemented using ArcObjects and the Visual Basic for Applications environment in ArcGIS. They were used to visualize a complex Internet-activity diary dataset collected in Columbus (Ohio, USA). The study shows that the 3D and 2D Geovisualization methods developed allow us to uncover important patterns in hybrid human activity-travel behavior.

Geography plays a role in each of these events, and maps certainly can play an important role in their understanding and support problem solving. But obviously maps cannot do this alone. Collaboration with other disciplines is required to bringing expertise together so as to be able to tackle large amounts of complex information.

The community, and especially the commission on visualization and virtual environments of the International Cartographic Association, has taken a different approach to mapping. In practice, we should view Geovisualization activities in the context of the geoprofessional's working approach. Geodata and software from all types of sources are now linked in geodata infrastructures established on local, national, and international levels. Users solve their problems with services and data available via the infrastructure and no longer need to have all data and software locally available. We should keep reaching to other technology-oriented disciplines, but we need to strive to make Geovisualization knowledge common in application fields

Maceachren, M J KraakAbstract:The use of new representation forms and interactive means to visualize geospatial data requires an understanding of the impact of the visual tools used for data exploration and knowledge construction. Use and usability assessment of implemented methods and tools is an important part of our efforts to build this understanding. Based on an approach to combine visual and computational methods for knowledge discovery in large geospatial data, an integrated visualization‐geocomputation environment has been developed based on the Self‐Organizing Map (SOM), the map and the parallel coordinate plot. This environment allows patterns and attribute relationships to be explored. A use and usability assessment is conducted to evaluate the ability of each of these visual representations to meet user performance and satisfaction goals. In the test, different representations are compared while exploring a socio‐demographic dataset.

Exploring geovisualization, 2005Co-Authors: Etien L Koua, M J KraakAbstract:Publisher Summary This chapter presents a prototype exploratory Geovisualization environment based on a usability framework. The environment implements a self-organizing map neural network algorithm and relates spatial analysis, datamining, and knowledge discovery methods for the extraction of patterns. Some graphical representations are then used to portray extracted patterns in a visual form that contribute to improved understanding of the derived structures and the geographical processes. As part of the design and development process, a usability evaluation plan is proposed to assess ways in which users interpret these graphical representations and their appropriateness for exploratory visual analysis. The ultimate goal of the proposed evaluation strategy is to improve the visual design of the representations. The development of the tool presented is based on an approach to combine visual and computational analysis into a visualization environment intended to contribute to the analysis of large volumes of geospatial data.

21st international Cartographic Conference ICC 2003: Cartographic renaissance, 2003Co-Authors: M J KraakAbstract:At the end of the sixties Hagerstrand introduced a space-time model which included features such as a Space-TimePath, and a Space-Time-Prism. His model is often seen as the start of the time-geography studies. Throughout the years his model has been applied and improved to understand our movements through space. Problems studied can be found in different fields of geography, and range from those on an individual movement to whole theories to optimize transportation. From a visualization perspective the Space-Time-Cube was the most prominent element in Hagerstrand’s approach. In its basic appearance these images consist of a cube with on its base a representation of geography (along the x- and y-axis), while the cube’s height represents time (z-axis). A typical Space-Time-Cube could contain the space time-paths of for instance individuals or bus routes. However, when the concept was introduced the options to create the graphics were limited to manual methods and the user could only experience the single view created by the draftsperson. An alternative view on the cube would mean to go through a laborious drawing exercise. Today’s software has options to automatically create the cube and its contents from a database. Data acquisition of space-time paths for both individuals and groups is also made easier using GPS. Today, the user’s viewing environment is, by default, interactive and allows one to view the cube from any direction. In this paper an extended interactive and dynamic visualization environment is proposed, and demonstrated, in which the user has full flexibility to view, manipulate and query the data in a Space-Time-Cube. Included are options to move slider planes along each of the axes to for instance select, or highlight a period in time or location in space. Examples will be discussed in which the time axis is manipulated by for instance changing world time for event time (time cartograms). Creativity should not stop here since it has been shown that especially an alternative perspective on the data will sparkle the mind with new ideas. The user should be allowed to for instance let the x- and/or y-axis be represented by other variables of the theme studied. Since the cube is seen as an integral part of a Geovisualization environment the option to link other views with other graphic representation does exist.
