Since older times, extracts and essential oils (EOs) from the aerial parts (leaves, flowering tops) of the plant are used in traditional medicine for herbal remedies. They are known to possess several biological properties, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-viral activities, as well as preventive effects against insects. The chemical variability exhibited by H. italicum extracts and EOs could explain all these health promoting activities. This review summaries the present state of knowledge on chemical constituents of H. italicum and its biological properties.

Forty-eight constituents accounting for between 96.5% and 83.0% of total oils have been identified and quantified. Among the identified constituents those present in the highest percentage were neryl acetate (17.6–35.6%), nerol (3.7–14.4%) and eudesmen-5-en-11-ol (6.4–23.5%). Among them, the neryl acetal percentage decreased when 5-eudesmen-11-ol percentage increased, and limonene reached 7% relative composition. The main fraction of the oil consisted of oxygenated compounds present in higher concentrations in June.

Relationships between the essential-oil composition, the inorganic plant composition, and the soil characteristics (inorganic composition, texture, and acidity) have been established using multivariate analysis such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and partial Redundancy Analysis (RDA). This study demonstrates a high level of intraspecific differences in oil composition due to environmental factors and, more particularly, soil characteristics.

Don ssp. italicum genotypes collected from different locations in Italy and Corsica (France) and grown under similar edaphic and climatic conditions. An AFLP technique was used to examine the level of genetic variability among the genotypes with the aim to disclose a possible correlation between the genetic and chemical data. The chemical analysis recognizes at least three different chemotypes based on the major constituents in the essential oils. This was confirmed by the AFLP analysis resulting in a dendrogram divided into three main clades. Because of the polymorphic trait of Helichrysum species, an efficient micropropagation protocol was established for the 20 H. italicum (Roth) G. Don ssp. italicum genotypes to guarantee the availability of stable genetic material with defined chemical profiles for industrial applications. The genotypes were found to influence the in vitro performance and the chemical composition of the essential oils, but not the phenotypic traits of the plants.

Nym. genotypes (genotype 1 and genotype 12) collected from different areas of Corsica were used. After the taxonomic identification based on several specific morphological characters, the two genotypes were subjected to microscopic studies. The precise structure of the glandular trichomes, secreting essential oils, on the flower heads and leaves of H. italicum (Roth) G. Don ssp. microphyllum (Willd.) Nym. are described here for the first time. Volatile constituents from both field-grown genotypes 1 and 12 were analyzed and their composition compared: monoterpenes were the most abundant class of compounds with nerol and its esters as the main metabolites. Genotype 12 was used to establish an efficient micropropagation protocol. For proliferation, different concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) alone or in combination with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) were tested adding sucrose (20% or 30%). To define the optimal conditions for in vitro rooting, the shoots obtained were divided and transferred to the culture medium without growth regulators or enriched by different auxins in combination with sucrose (20% or 30%). Acclimatization, carried out in different conditions was easy, registering high survival percentages. The results achieved in this study allowed to obtain selected and standardized plants suitable for the exploitation in industrial sectors of this interesting species.

Composition of Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G. Don fil subsp. italicum essential oils from Corsica (France)

BernardiniAbstract:The components of essential oils of Helichrysum italicum subsp. italicum growing in Corsica were investigated by the combination of GC and GC-MS. In a first part, nine commercial and laboratories-prepared samples were analyzed and Corsican oils were found to contain neryl acetate as predominant compound, with amounts from 15.8% (from plants in stage of early shoots) to 42.5% (in full flowering period). In a second part, we sampled Helichrysum italicum subsp. italicum from three locations over the growth cycle of the plant. Significant variations were observed in the concentration of the main constituents, pointing out a chemical composition of oils produced from plants in early shoots (higher amounts of ketones and -diketones) different from that obtained from samples harvested in the stages of flowering (higher contents of neryl acetate).
